Sometimes—but opening a downloaded video is not risk-free. A media player has to parse the file, and a crafted file can exploit a flaw in that parsing software. Keep the player and operating system updated, get files and installers from sources you trust, and do not treat a scan or familiar-looking extension as a guarantee.
How can a video file pose a security risk?
A video file is data, but the player must interpret that data to show the video and process its metadata or playlist information. If the player has a vulnerability, specially crafted media may trigger it. The resulting impact depends on the particular flaw, software version, and operating system; this does not mean every video file is dangerous or that every player has the same vulnerability.

VideoLAN’s September 2026 security bulletin reports that crafted files or streams could trigger issues in VLC while opening media, pre-parsing metadata, or processing playlists. The bulletin describes possible crashes and memory disclosure with the user’s privileges, and says code execution was demonstrated on macOS under specific conditions. Is VLC safe to use for downloaded videos?
For the issues covered by that bulletin, VideoLAN identifies VLC 3.0.23 and earlier as affected and VLC 3.0.24 as the update that addresses them. The bulletin says 3.0.24 fixes over 50 issues in VLC itself. It also says updated bundled libraries, including FFmpeg, GnuTLS, libxml2, and libpng, include fixes for at least 74 publicly documented vulnerabilities; that is the bulletin’s count for those libraries, not 74 VLC vulnerabilities. VideoLAN’s official Windows download page lists VLC 3.0.24. Version availability can change, so check the publisher’s page and security information for the current release rather than assuming this version remains current indefinitely. VLC’s official Windows download page
If you cannot install the update, VideoLAN advises: “Users who cannot upgrade yet should refrain from opening files or streams from untrusted sources.” That is prudent for the specific VLC issues in its bulletin; it is not evidence that all other players share those flaws.

How to reduce the risk before playing a download
- Update the player and operating system. Use their usual official update channels. For VLC, check VideoLAN’s current security information and download page; for other players, consult their publishers’ update and security notices.
- Get player installers from the publisher. Avoid repackaged installers from download sites. VideoLAN identifies its own official site as the safe download source, and its official Windows page lists the VLC release. VideoLAN downloads
- Check where the video came from. Confirm that it was expected and supplied by a source you trust. Microsoft recommends checking a downloaded file’s origin, scanning it with antivirus software, and confirming that its type matches what you expected. Avoid unexpected files from unknown senders. - Keep existing antivirus protection enabled. Microsoft says Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans opened or downloaded files by default when real-time protection is operating. Files opened or downloaded while real-time protection is off will not be scanned during that time. A scan can reduce risk, but it does not certify a file as harmless. - Heed download warnings. On Windows, Attachment Manager uses Mark of the Web information to decide whether to warn about or block some downloaded files. Microsoft Support says: “Only unblock files from trusted sources.” Verify the file’s provenance before considering an unblock action; do not disable protection simply to make an unknown download play. - Check the full file name when needed. Showing file extensions in Windows can help reveal what type a file claims to be. But an extension is only a label: renaming a file does not convert its contents, and a familiar extension does not establish that a file is safe. Microsoft guidance on file name extensions
What to consider when choosing a media player
Popularity, format support, or a reputation for being easy to use does not establish that a player is inherently safer. Compare players using their security and support practices, and confirm that your installed version includes relevant fixes.

- Is the player still supported and receiving updates?
- Does its publisher publish security notices and fixes?
- Is your installed version covered by the fixes that apply to it?
- Did you get the installer from the official publisher?
- Is your operating system still receiving security updates?
The VLC bulletin is a concrete example of why version and update status matter, not a basis for ranking VLC against other players. The available official guidance does not establish a universal rate for how often downloaded videos are malicious or show that antivirus scanning catches every threat.
