Can a Computer Monitor Get a Virus? What to Know About the Risks

A conventional display is not a typical home for a PC virus, but firmware, USB functions, and network connectivity can matter. Learn how to distinguish monitor risks from computer malware.

A conventional computer monitor is unlikely to run an ordinary computer virus: it displays the image sent by a computer rather than operating like a general-purpose PC. But monitors and other peripherals can contain firmware, and smart or network-connected devices may have software and interfaces that create cybersecurity risks. That is a different issue from a virus infecting a typical screen.

What does it mean for a monitor to have a virus?

A virus is malicious software that runs on a computing system. Most desktop monitors do not run PC applications or a full operating system, so the usual picture of a virus infecting a computer does not neatly apply to a basic display.

Monitors can nevertheless contain firmware: low-level code that controls hardware. If firmware is altered or a device has vulnerable software, that can pose a security risk. NIST’s BIOS guidance explains why malicious firmware changes can matter on PC client systems, but it addresses BIOS—not monitor firmware—and does not establish that monitors are commonly infected. The UK National Cyber Security Centre likewise describes firmware as important to device security. NIST SP 800-147; NCSC device firmware guidance.

Can a monitor infect your computer?

A standard display connected only by a video cable is not known from these sources to be a common malware route. A video cable should not be treated as equivalent to a USB data connection or a network connection. Risk depends on the device’s design, the interfaces it exposes, its connectivity, and whether its manufacturer supports security updates.

USB peripherals deserve separate care. A monitor may include a USB hub or other data functions, but that does not make every USB-connected monitor dangerous. The Cyber Security Agency of Singapore warns that malware can spread through USB devices and that some devices can emulate a keyboard. Avoid USB devices from unfamiliar or untrusted sources, and follow your organization’s device-control rules where applicable. CSA Singapore’s USB malware advisory; NCSC guidance on using peripherals securely.

How do ordinary displays differ from connected or specialized monitors?

Device type What affects its security Practical focus
Conventional display used only for video output Its role is primarily to show the computer’s picture; the reviewed sources do not establish a prevalence rate for malware in ordinary displays. Investigate the computer and its other connected devices first if malware is suspected.
Smart, network-connected, or USB-capable display Network access, USB or other data functions, embedded software or firmware, and vendor update support. Identify the exact model and interfaces; use only manufacturer-provided updates and instructions.
Specialized medical monitor Its exact model, clinical function, network exposure, and regulator or manufacturer remediation. Follow the facility’s and regulator’s guidance; do not improvise firmware changes.

Canada’s Centre for Cyber Security discusses security risks involving peripheral devices and their firmware, supporting the general point that peripherals have security properties. It does not quantify how often monitors are compromised. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security peripheral-device guidance.

What does the patient-monitor security alert show?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration documented cybersecurity vulnerabilities in specific patient monitors: the Contec CMS8000 and the relabeled Epsimed MN-120. Its communication described risks including unauthorized remote control, a software backdoor, and patient-data exfiltration after internet connection. These are healthcare devices with clinical functions, not ordinary desktop displays, so the alert does not show that consumer computer monitors commonly contain viruses.

In its July 2, 2025 update, the FDA described a patch that removes networking functionality, leaving local monitoring. The agency said installation requires specialized expertise and advised patients and caregivers not to install it themselves. At the time of the FDA communication, the agency said it was not aware of related cybersecurity incidents, injuries, or deaths; check the FDA page for any later updates. How can you tell if a monitor has a virus?

There is no consumer test for monitor infection in the official sources cited here. Screen flicker, odd colors, dead pixels, or pop-ups do not by themselves diagnose malware in the monitor. Pop-ups usually appear in the computer’s software environment; display defects can have other causes. Treat symptoms as clues to investigate, not proof that the screen is infected.

  • Check the computer that drives the display for suspicious software, browser notifications, or other signs of compromise.
  • Identify the monitor’s exact make, model, and features, including network access, USB data functions, or embedded computing capabilities.
  • Review the manufacturer’s model-specific security and firmware guidance. Do not install firmware from an unofficial source.
  • Consider recently connected USB accessories separately, especially devices from unknown or untrusted sources.

What should you do if you are concerned?

  1. Identify the device. Record its exact model and determine whether it is a basic display, a smart display, or a specialized device with network or USB functions.
  2. Check the host and accessories. Examine the connected computer and any recently attached peripherals. Do not assume the monitor itself is the source.
  3. Use official update instructions. Keep software and firmware up to date using the manufacturer’s guidance; the FBI also recommends keeping operating systems, software, and firmware current. FBI guidance on connected devices.
  4. Limit connectivity when appropriate. If a connected device appears compromised, disconnect its network connection when doing so is safe and appropriate, then contact the vendor or your IT support team.
  5. Get qualified help for specialized equipment. For a medical monitor, follow the healthcare facility’s and regulator’s instructions. Do not try an improvised reset, patch, or firmware change that could affect clinical operation.

Does antivirus software clean a monitor?

Antivirus software on the connected computer can help address threats on that computer, but the sources here do not establish that it can scan or clean a monitor’s firmware. If a monitor has embedded software or network features and compromise is a concern, use the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance or seek qualified support rather than treating the monitor like a PC hard drive.
