Fingerprint Reader Not Working? Key Fixes for Windows, iPhone, iPad and Pixel

A rejected fingerprint is not proof of a broken sensor. Start with safe sign-in, device-specific cleaning and placement, then check enrollment, drivers and diagnostics.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A failed fingerprint scan does not automatically mean the sensor is broken. First sign in with your PIN, password or passcode; then clean the sensor the way its manufacturer recommends, retry with steady finger placement and check enrollment and settings. If a Windows computer no longer detects its reader, check its driver and run the maker’s hardware diagnostic before considering repair.

Start with the safest checks

Keep access to the device

Use a PIN or password on Windows, or the device passcode or backup sign-in method on a phone or tablet. Some devices require a passcode in certain security situations even when fingerprint recognition is working, so a passcode prompt alone does not establish that the sensor has failed.

Clean the sensor and finger

Make sure both the sensor and your finger are clean and dry. Cleaning instructions vary by device: Microsoft advises using a lint-free cloth on Surface readers and warns against glass cleaner and other cleaning chemicals. Apple recommends a clean, lint-free cloth for Touch ID. Google permits alcohol wipes for Pixel power-button sensors. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s cleaning method to a different device. A lint-free cloth is an optional cleaning aid, not a fix for electronic or sensor damage.

Try deliberate placement

Use the finger you enrolled and hold it still while the reader scans. For Surface, Microsoft recommends placing the finger flat in the middle of the power button with light pressure. Apple says to cover the Touch ID sensor completely, including its surrounding metal ring, without moving your finger. LG’s laptop guidance likewise recommends placing the finger in the middle and level with the sensor.

Check enrollment, settings and anything blocking the sensor

A fingerprint can be difficult to recognize if the enrolled image is incomplete, the feature is disabled or a case or protector obstructs the sensor. Look for a message such as “Your fingerprint couldn’t be recognized,” “Cannot set up the fingerprint reader” or “Fingerprint sensor not recognising your fingerprint,” and note whether the problem is recognition, enrollment or detection. Those point to different checks.

  • Windows 10 and 11: Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Fingerprint recognition (Windows Hello). Add another finger, or remove and set up the fingerprint again. When registering, follow the prompts and vary the finger’s angle. Microsoft’s general Windows Hello advice also recommends registering more than one fingerprint. See Microsoft’s Windows Hello troubleshooting guide.
  • Apple Touch ID: Confirm Touch ID is enabled for the intended use and that at least one fingerprint is enrolled. A case or screen protector must not cover the sensor or its surrounding ring. The sensor is in the Home button, or in the top button on iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad Air (4th and 5th generation). Apple also requires a passcode after a restart, after five consecutive unrecognized fingerprints, after more than 48 hours without unlocking, and in other security situations; these prompts do not by themselves indicate a fault. See Apple’s Touch ID troubleshooting steps.
  • Google Pixel: Re-enroll the fingerprint and capture the center of the pad as well as its edges and tips. Google says up to five fingerprints can be added. If a case is in use, re-enrollment can account for the way the finger reaches the sensor with that case fitted. On Pixel Fold, check the “Touch to unlock anytime” setting if the side-mounted power-button sensor seems unresponsive; behavior depends on that setting. See Google Pixel’s fingerprint sensor help.
  • Surface: Some models use a Fingerprint Power Button and others a reader in a Surface Pro Keyboard. A lit LED around a Fingerprint Power Button indicates it is ready to be used as a reader. If using a detachable keyboard, detach and reattach it, then retry. See Microsoft’s Surface troubleshooting guide.

When a Windows reader is missing or unreliable

“Unable to log in using the fingerprint reader” can result from an enrollment, settings or driver problem as well as a hardware fault. If cleaning, placement and re-enrollment do not help, check whether Windows sees the device before deciding the sensor needs replacement.

Yoidesu USB Fingerprint Reader for Windows Hello, Plug & Play Security Key
  • Windows Hello for Windows 10/11 - Only works with Windows Hello on Windows 10/11 PCs and laptops. Plug the USB fingerprint reader into your computer and sign in with one touch. Not compatible with Mac, macOS, Linux or Chrome OS.
  • Plug-and-Play Fingerprint Login - No extra app is needed on most genuine Windows systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, set up fingerprint sign-in through Windows Hello, and unlock your PC without typing long passwords every time.
  • Fast 0.5s 360° Recognition - Capacitive fingerprint technology supports quick authentication in about 0.5 seconds. 360° touch recognition helps read your fingerprint from different angles for faster, smoother daily login.
  • Compact Scanner for PC & Laptop + Multi-User Support - Small, lightweight USB design works well for desktops, laptops, office PCs and shared home computers without built-in fingerprint sensors. Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per user account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access.
  • Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.
  1. Check detection: Open Device Manager and look for the reader under Biometric devices. If it is not there, also check Unknown devices, as Dell advises.
  2. Check model-specific software: Look for available driver updates. For Surface, use the Surface app to check driver and firmware health, then install available updates through Windows Update. Prefer drivers and diagnostics for the exact device model.
  3. Recheck the symptom: If the reader appears but rejects a finger, revisit enrollment and placement. If it is absent or reported as an unknown device, detection or driver troubleshooting is the more relevant path.
  4. Run the manufacturer’s hardware diagnostic: Follow the device maker’s instructions. Dell recommends a fingerprint hardware test; a failed test is a reason to contact Dell Technical Support for repair options available in your region.

Do not jump to restoring or reinstalling Windows as a fingerprint fix. Dell describes reinstalling Windows as a last resort and warns that it can permanently delete user data. Back up important files before any operating-system recovery.

Know when a prompt is normal—and when to seek service

Apple devices sometimes require a passcode for security reasons even when Touch ID is functioning. By contrast, Apple advises seeking service if Touch ID setup cannot be completed or the Touch ID setting remains dimmed or greyed out after its troubleshooting steps. For a Windows computer, a failed manufacturer hardware test is stronger evidence of a hardware fault than an isolated rejected scan. Dell advises contacting support after a failed test; repair options vary by region.

On older LG laptop instructions, some configuration directions are specific to Windows 10. Check that the steps apply to the laptop’s model and installed Windows version before following them. Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the Surface guidance and device-specific requirements still need to be matched to the computer in use.

Match the next step to the symptom

What you observe Check first Next step
Fingerprint is rejected, but the reader is available Clean, dry finger and sensor; steady placement; correct enrolled finger; enrollment and settings Re-enroll or add another fingerprint using the device maker’s steps
Reader is absent from Windows settings or Device Manager Biometric and Unknown devices in Device Manager; model-specific drivers Install available manufacturer updates and run its hardware diagnostic
Fingerprint setup cannot be completed Whether the feature is enabled and the sensor is unobstructed Follow the device maker’s setup guidance; contact Apple service if Touch ID setup still fails or its setting remains dimmed
Reader appears after a recent update but no longer works Driver and firmware health for the exact model Use the manufacturer’s support guidance and diagnostic rather than assuming the update proves hardware damage
Hardware diagnostic fails Record the device model and test result Contact the manufacturer for repair options in your region

There is no single replacement part or repair procedure that applies to every built-in fingerprint reader. Repair options and costs depend on the exact device, region and diagnostic result, so use the manufacturer’s service channel rather than buying a generic sensor module.
