Podia lists downloads and course tools in an integrated store; Shopify offers digital-file delivery within a broader ecommerce platform; Gumroad supports eBooks and courses with sale-based fees; and Teachable focuses on courses, coaching and digital downloads. No one option is best for every seller.
How these platforms differ
The main distinction is whether you want a combined creator storefront, digital delivery added to a wider online store, or a course-led service. The platform descriptions establish different capabilities, but they do not provide a consistent, region-by-region comparison of payment availability, payouts and tax handling. Check those details for your country before choosing.

Which platform fits your product mix?
For eBooks and structured courses together
Start with whether the service hosts both the files and the course content, then check the teaching structure you need. Podia’s store page explicitly lists downloads alongside course features such as drip lessons, quizzes and certificates. This makes it a useful candidate to investigate when both formats belong in one storefront; confirm plan limits and payment availability directly.
#1 Best Overall
For a broader ecommerce store
Shopify’s Digital Products app is for delivering files or links as part of a larger store. Its described options include automatic or manual fulfillment, download limits, bundles and uploads up to 5 GB. The app is free, but it does not replace the standard Shopify subscription or payment-processing costs. If your courses need structured lessons, determine whether the delivery setup you choose covers that learning experience.
For a sale-based fee model
Gumroad’s pricing page says there is no monthly fee and lists 10% + $0.50 for direct sales and 30% through Discover. These are distinct sales routes with different listed charges, so estimate costs using the route your customers will actually use. The fees are platform-published and may change; check the live page before committing.
Rank #2
For a course-led business
Teachable describes tools for creating and selling courses, coaching and digital downloads. It is worth assessing when course delivery leads your business and downloads are an additional product. Its product page alone does not establish current plan limits or fees, so verify that the storefront and download-sales setup suit your needs.

Questions to answer before you commit
- What are you selling? Separate standalone eBooks or other files from lessons that need a sequence, drip schedule, quizzes or certificates.
- Who handles delivery? Check whether the platform hosts the content and fulfills purchases, or whether you must configure an app, links or another service.
- What will each sale cost? Add subscription charges, transaction or sales fees, payment processing and any costs for required apps. Do not compare a monthly price with a per-sale fee as though they were equivalent.
- Where will you sell? Confirm supported payment methods, payout availability and tax handling for your country; the cited platform pages do not provide a comparable regional matrix.
- What might you add later? Consider whether memberships, coaching, physical goods or a wider product catalog are part of your plans.
A practical way to decide
- Write down the formats you will sell: standalone downloads, courses, or both.
- For courses, list the learning features you actually need, such as drip lessons, quizzes or certificates.
- Choose the platform type that matches the workflow: combined creator store, ecommerce store with digital delivery, or course-led service.
- Estimate total costs using your expected sales route and volume, including subscriptions and payment processing where applicable.
- Confirm current plan features, file limits, payment availability, payouts and tax handling with the provider before moving your catalog.
