Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsually, a Blu-ray player can play DVDs and CDs, but support varies by model. A standard Blu-ray player cannot play a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc: that requires an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. UHD players play standard Blu-ray discs, and most also play DVDs. Check the exact model’s specifications for CD and recordable-disc support.
Can a Blu-ray player play DVDs?
Usually, yes, but DVD playback is not guaranteed for every model. ENERGY STAR advises checking a player’s format capabilities rather than assuming that support from the Blu-ray label alone. See ENERGY STAR’s consumer guidance.

Can a Blu-ray player play CDs?
Many Blu-ray players can play audio CDs, but CD support is model-dependent. Check the player’s specification list or manual for audio CD playback; if you use recordable or rewritable discs, confirm those formats separately. ENERGY STAR likewise describes DVD and CD playback as capabilities a Blu-ray player “may” have, not a universal guarantee.
Can it play 4K UHD discs?
No—not if it is a standard Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray Disc Association states that “Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs cannot be played in a standard Blu-ray Disc player.” You need a player that explicitly supports Ultra HD Blu-ray. See the Association’s compatibility FAQ.

“4K Blu-ray” commonly refers to Ultra HD Blu-ray, a separate disc format. A player’s 4K upscaling feature can improve the output of supported DVDs or standard Blu-ray discs, but it does not enable the player to read a UHD disc. Check for explicit Ultra HD Blu-ray disc support, not just the words “4K” or “upscaling” in a product description.
What an Ultra HD Blu-ray player can play
According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, Ultra HD Blu-ray players play current standard Blu-ray Disc content, and most also play DVDs. CD support should still be verified for the specific player, as should any recordable or rewritable disc formats you need.

Will a UHD disc play in 4K on your TV?
Disc compatibility is only the first step. Ultra HD Blu-ray supports resolutions up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, HDR and frame rates up to 60 frames per second, but the picture you get depends on the player, disc, TV and connection. The Blu-ray Disc Association describes these as format capabilities, not a guarantee that every setup will display them.

Connection requirements can vary by model: for example, Philips says its BDP7303/F7 requires a 4K-capable HDMI connection to deliver maximum-resolution playback; with a 720p or 1080p TV, it downscales to the TV’s maximum resolution. That is specific to this Philips model, so consult the manual for your own player.

How to check a player before using or buying it
- Look for the disc format. The specifications or manual should say “Ultra HD Blu-ray” if the player is intended to read UHD discs. “4K upscaling” alone is not enough.
- Confirm DVD and CD support. Check the format list for DVD and audio CD. Confirm recordable and rewritable variants separately if you use them.
- Check the TV connection. Match the player’s output to the TV’s resolution and HDR capabilities, and follow the model’s HDMI requirements for the output you want.
For model-specific support, consult the manufacturer’s specifications or manual. A UHD player is the right format choice if you have 4K UHD discs, but verify that it also supports any DVDs, CDs or special disc variants you plan to use.
