That “stop” is normally a software pause or cancel, not a guaranteed diagnosis and not a mains-power disconnect. The printer, camera, integration, pause scripts and human follow-up all determine whether the response is safe and useful.
What “stop automatically” means in practice
A failure detector does not usually press a physical emergency-stop button. It watches the print, classifies visible problems and sends an action through the control platform. In an OctoPrint-based setup, the available job actions include starting, restarting, pausing, resuming and cancelling a print. A detector can therefore stop material deposition by issuing a pause or cancel command while the printer remains powered.

| Response | What happens | When it is useful | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alert only | You receive a notification and decide what to do. | Uncertain detections, unattended monitoring with human review, or setups where automatic motion is not yet validated. | It does not stop extrusion or movement by itself. |
| Automatic pause | The control software pauses the active job. The print can normally be inspected and either resumed or cancelled. | A likely spaghetti failure, adhesion loss or nozzle blob where preserving the job may be worthwhile. | It does not remove failed material or guarantee that heaters are off. |
| Automatic cancel | The job is cancelled through the printer-control API. | Situations where continuing would almost certainly waste material or risk a collision. | It does not clear the bed or make the printer safe for unattended maintenance. |
| Power cut or emergency stop | Electrical power or motion is forcibly removed. | Only with separate, purpose-built safety hardware and a carefully tested control design. | Obico’s documented action is not a mains-power cutoff. |
Obico’s API documentation describes the high-confidence action plainly: “The print will be paused automatically.” When the prediction score is not very high, the documented behavior is to leave the print running and send an alert instead. That threshold-based approach reduces unnecessary pauses, but it means a detector can miss a real failure or wait until the evidence is stronger.

How a camera-based detector decides to pause
1. The webcam observes the build area
A webcam supplies a continuing view while the printer is actively printing. The useful frame must include the nozzle, the first layers and enough of the model to reveal a developing failure. A clear, stable USB webcam is the most straightforward hardware choice for an OctoPrint host. A Raspberry Pi-class computer is commonly used as the host for OctoPrint, but the detector still needs a compatible printer connection and a usable camera feed.

2. The AI looks for visible failure patterns
The detector analyzes successive video frames for anomalies such as spaghetti-like strands, a model that has detached from the bed, or a growing blob around the nozzle. These are visual conditions. A hidden thermistor fault, an intermittent cable, an electrical problem, or a temperature error that is not visible in the image is outside what a camera classifier can reliably determine.
3. A prediction score controls the response
The system assigns a confidence or prediction score to its failure assessment. A high enough score can trigger the configured automatic pause. A lower score generally produces an alert without pausing. No universal accuracy percentage is established in the official material, so a score should not be presented as a guaranteed probability that the print has failed.
4. The integration sends a printer command
Obico can send an action through OctoPrint or a supported Klipper integration. OctoPrint’s job-command interface accepts pause, resume, toggle and cancel actions, subject to the printer’s current state. If the printer is not operational or a command’s preconditions are not met, the API can return HTTP 409 instead of changing the job.

What happens during an automatic pause
- The printer is already in an active print state and the camera feed is available.
- The detector identifies a pattern that exceeds the configured confidence needed for an automatic action.
- The integration sends a pause request to OctoPrint or the supported Klipper control layer.
- The printer executes its configured pause behavior. Depending on the pause script, it may park the toolhead, retract filament or leave heaters enabled.
- You receive the configured notification, inspect the machine and choose whether to resume, cancel or intervene manually.
A pause is recoverable, but it is not automatically safe in every configuration. Review the pause and resume G-code used by your control platform. A script that leaves a hot nozzle or heated bed on can create a burn, fire or material-damage hazard if the machine is left unattended. Thermal-safety features and the behavior after a communication failure should be tested before relying on unattended operation.
Requirements before enabling automatic action
- Compatible printer connection: A printer connected to OctoPrint or a supported Klipper integration.
- Stable camera view: The nozzle and build area remain visible throughout the job, without vibration, glare or an obstructing cable.
- Detection enabled: AI failure detection is turned on for the print and has not been muted for that job.
- Available detection allowance: Accounts subject to AI Detection Hours must have hours remaining.
- Validated control behavior: Pause, resume and cancel actions work correctly before they are delegated to an automated detector.
- Human notification: An alert channel lets someone inspect the printer after an uncertain detection or automatic pause.
- Safe physical placement: The camera and computer are mounted so they cannot strike the printer, snag moving parts or block ventilation.
Conditions that disable or limit detection
Obico documents several cases in which detection is not operating. It is off when the printer is not actively printing, when the user has disabled AI failure detection, when detection has been muted for the current print, or when the account has exhausted its AI Detection Hours. A job that appears “watched” in a dashboard may therefore have no active detector if one of these conditions applies.
Even when detection is enabled, the image determines what the model can see. Poor framing can hide the nozzle or the edge of the bed. Low light, reflections, a dirty lens, steam, an enclosure panel or a shifted camera mount can make a normal print look abnormal. Conversely, a failure that develops outside the camera’s field of view may never be classified. False positives can pause a good print; false negatives can allow a bad one to continue.

How to configure a dependable setup
Connect and verify the printer-control layer
First confirm that OctoPrint or the supported Klipper interface can control the printer without the detector. Start a small test job, verify that pause and resume work, and confirm that cancel ends the job cleanly. If a command returns HTTP 409, check whether the printer is operational and whether its current job state permits that action; do not treat a rejected command as proof that the detector is malfunctioning.
Mount and test the webcam
Frame the shot so the nozzle, the first-layer area and the majority of the model are visible. Check the view at the lowest and highest toolhead positions used by the printer. Test with the enclosure closed if that is how production prints run. A camera that is well framed at the start but blocked later can undermine detection without producing an obvious software error.
Enable detection for a controlled print
Turn on AI failure detection for the specific print, make sure it has not been muted and verify that the account has detection hours available where applicable. Use a simple, inexpensive test object first. Observe whether alerts arrive and whether the detector remains active for the full print rather than assuming that an enabled account monitors every idle or completed job.

Validate the pause script
Trigger a pause under supervision and record what the printer does: where the toolhead parks, whether filament retracts, whether the bed and nozzle remain heated, and how resume returns to the exact layer. If the behavior is unsafe or causes a collision, fix the pause and resume scripts before allowing an automatic action. Keep a manual cancel option available while testing.
Pause versus cancel: which response should you choose?
| Choose automatic pause when… | Choose automatic cancel when… |
|---|---|
| You want to inspect the failure before discarding the job. | The observed condition is likely to cause continued damage if motion or extrusion continues. |
| The print may be recoverable after removing loose filament or correcting adhesion. | There is no realistic recovery path, or a failed object could collide with the toolhead repeatedly. |
| Your pause script has been tested and leaves the machine in a known safe state. | Your cancellation behavior has been tested and reliably stops the job. |
| A human can respond promptly to the notification. | You have a documented procedure for making the printer safe after cancellation. |
For most new installations, alert-first or pause-and-inspect is the more conservative progression. Automatic cancellation removes the opportunity to recover a marginally misclassified job and should be enabled only after repeated supervised tests.
Detection is not automatic bed clearing
Stopping a print and removing the failed object are separate engineering tasks. The Continuous Print plugin documentation warns that automatic bed clearing requires a printer method for clearing the bed and correctly written G-code. Incorrect setup can damage the printer. A detector may pause a spaghetti failure, but it cannot safely sweep the bed, collect debris or prepare the surface for the next job without additional hardware and carefully validated motion.

OctoPrint, Klipper and vendor-native systems
| Operating model | Typical response path | Strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OctoPrint integration | Camera detector sends pause, resume or cancel through OctoPrint’s job API. | Explicit software controls and a recoverable pause workflow. | Commands depend on printer state; HTTP 409 can reject an action. |
| Klipper integration | Detector communicates with a supported Fluidd or Mainsail-based control setup. | Useful for printers already managed in a Klipper ecosystem. | Exact pause scripts and safety behavior depend on the individual configuration. |
| Vendor-native camera system | Camera and failure response are built into the manufacturer’s software. | Fewer separate components to integrate. | Capabilities, recovery controls and supported printers vary by vendor. |
| Local or self-hosted detection | Analysis and actions run on equipment you control, where supported. | Potentially less dependence on a usage-limited service. | More responsibility for model setup, maintenance and reliable notifications. |
| Cloud service with usage limits | Video or detections are handled by an online service and commands are sent back to the printer. | Convenient monitoring and centralized alerts. | Account allowances, connectivity and service availability can affect monitoring. |
Failure modes and practical fixes
No alert and no pause
- Confirm that a print is actively running; idle printers are not monitored as active jobs.
- Check that AI failure detection is enabled and not muted for the current print.
- Check remaining AI Detection Hours if the account uses that allowance.
- Inspect the camera stream for a frozen image, darkness, obstruction or a changed angle.
Too many pauses on good prints
- Improve lighting and remove reflections or moving objects from the frame.
- Reframe the camera so the model is not repeatedly hidden at certain heights.
- Use supervised runs to determine whether the confidence threshold or response mode should be less aggressive.
The printer pauses but cannot resume
- Inspect the pause and resume G-code for toolhead parking, retraction and temperature commands.
- Confirm that the printer is still operational and that the resume request meets the control API’s state requirements.
- If the printer reports an HTTP 409, correct the state or connection problem before sending another command.
The detector misses a visible failure
- Check whether the failure was in the camera’s field of view and adequately lit.
- Remember that no published universal accuracy percentage establishes that every visible failure will be caught.
- Keep human supervision for unusual geometries, new materials and jobs whose failure consequences are high.
A safe operating policy for unattended prints
Use automatic pausing as an additional safety layer, not as permission to ignore the machine. Start with familiar filament, a known-good profile and a low-cost model. Keep notifications enabled and make sure someone can inspect the printer promptly. For new materials, unfamiliar geometries, very hot processes or any setup whose pause script has not been validated, retain a human review step and avoid automatic recovery.
The strongest practical configuration is one in which the camera view is stable, the detector is active for the whole job, OctoPrint or Klipper accepts control commands reliably, pause behavior has been tested, and a person can decide whether to resume or cancel. Under those conditions, a 3D-printer failure detector can stop many visible failures automatically—but it remains a probabilistic monitor rather than a guarantee that every failed print will be recognized or made safe.
