Yes, it can—but being live around the clock is not, by itself, a way to earn recommendations or build loyal viewers. YouTube says recommendations respond to what individual viewers watch and enjoy, not to a preferred video format. A continuous stream is worth testing when it gives people a reason to drop in, participate, and return—and when you can sustain its quality.
What a 24/7 stream can—and cannot—do for growth
A continuous stream can make a channel available whenever its intended audience wants to tune in. That can suit programming that remains useful when someone arrives midway, such as music, ambient content, or an ongoing process. These are format possibilities, not evidence that any one type will grow faster.

YouTube says recommendations are personalized and driven by viewer signals and how content performs when shown. It also says it does not favor a particular video format. The official guidance does not establish that uninterrupted uptime earns a channel extra distribution or guarantees regular viewers. YouTube’s recommendation guidance and search and discovery guidance emphasize viewer interest, performance, competition, and seasonality.
Live does offer a chance to connect in real time through chat and shared experiences. That is an opportunity for community, not proof that a stream will attract or retain an audience. The key question is not only “Can this stay live?” but “Why would someone choose it, and what would make them come back?”

Define the audience promise before going live
Decide what success means for your channel before committing to continuous programming. You might be trying to encourage returning viewers, create a place for regular interaction, reach new viewers, or produce useful public replays. YouTube recommends setting goals that reflect what growth means to you.
- Make the content work for late arrivals. A viewer should be able to understand its appeal without having seen the start. If the content depends on context or a shared start time, scheduled live events may fit better than a continuous feed.
- Give people a reason to participate. Consider whether chat or another shared experience genuinely adds value. Live features create an opening for interaction; they do not make an otherwise unclear stream compelling.
- Make the stream easy to recognize. Use a clear title and thumbnail that accurately describe what is happening, and choose timing with the intended audience in mind.
- Keep production sustainable. YouTube advises prioritizing sustainable quality rather than simply publishing more often. A small channel does not need to choose the most demanding schedule to serve its audience.
Choose a format for the content and audience
There is no universal winner between continuous and scheduled programming, or between horizontal and vertical live. Consider what viewers need from the content, which discovery surfaces and features matter, and how much production and moderation the format requires.

Check the current live-streaming setup and feature information before settling on horizontal or vertical. For scheduled events, YouTube suggests considering audience-active times; it says publish time is not known to affect long-term video viewership.

Run a manageable experiment and measure what happens
- Set a goal and baseline. Write down the audience promise and the result you want, such as recurring viewers or chat participation. A limited trial or manageable schedule is more useful than assuming you must begin with 24/7 operation.
- Prepare the stream. Give it an accurate title and thumbnail. If you schedule it, choose timing with your intended viewers in mind. YouTube recommends promoting a live event in advance, including sharing its link at least 48 hours beforehand.
- Keep useful material available afterward. Where appropriate, leave the archive public and organize replays or highlights into playlists. These steps create more opportunities for people to find the material; they do not guarantee discovery.
- Review the Live analytics funnel. Check impressions and click-through rate to understand whether viewers are being shown and choosing the stream. Then look at views and average view duration to see whether people stay. Compare streams of the same type rather than treating different formats as equivalent.
- Inspect traffic sources. YouTube Live analytics can show sources such as Search, Suggested videos, playlists, and external traffic. Use those reports to identify where viewers are finding the stream and what to improve.
- Look at audience segments over time. Review trends for new, casual, and regular viewers rather than using subscriber count as a stand-in for an active audience. YouTube defines regular viewers as people who returned to watch your content for at least six months in the past year—a deliberately high standard. A low count early in an experiment does not, by itself, show that it failed.
- Decide whether to continue. Weigh the results against your stated goal and the time, production, technical, and moderation effort involved. Continue if the format serves the goal at a sustainable cost; adjust or stop if it does not.
YouTube recommends public archives to create further opportunities for reach and organizing archives and highlights into playlists. Its Live analytics guidance explains the reports available for evaluating a stream.

Check eligibility and channel responsibilities
YouTube’s live-streaming help page says a creator needs a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days to go live; it also says the minimum age to live stream is 16. Streams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check the current eligibility and live-streaming requirements, since platform rules can change.
Continuous programming also makes it important to plan for the content and the people around it. Use material you have the rights to stream, follow YouTube’s policies, and decide how chat will be moderated. A stream that is technically available but difficult to watch or unsafe to participate in is unlikely to serve a community well.

Do it yourself with an encoder
YouTube lists encoder streaming as one way to go live, alongside options such as mobile, webcam, and console streaming. An encoder-based setup can suit a creator who wants to manage the broadcast directly, but YouTube does not say that a dedicated hardware encoder is required. Choose a setup that matches your video source, workflow, and intended resolution, and follow the encoder’s and YouTube’s current instructions. Do not buy equipment on the assumption that every channel needs it.
