Before broadcasting, confirm that the channel is eligible and that the station’s rights cover the YouTube simulcast—and any archive.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it ahead of the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- An encoder that can take the station’s audio and send a live feed to YouTube. YouTube describes encoders as supporting external audio and video hardware; it does not require a particular brand or model. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A usable audio signal from the station’s mixer, playout system, or other program source, plus a visual for the stream, such as a station logo or program graphic. The right connection depends on the equipment you already have.
- Permission for the station’s content to be transmitted on YouTube and, if desired, retained as an archive. A terrestrial broadcast or website-streaming agreement does not by itself establish that a YouTube simulcast is covered.
Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio
1. Create or schedule the stream
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go Live.
- In Live Control Room, choose the Stream tab to create a stream immediately, or use Manage to schedule one. Scheduling provides a watch-page URL that you can share ahead of the broadcast.
- Set up the stream details and audience settings for the program. If you are testing, choose a private or unlisted stream where appropriate so you can check the setup before sharing it publicly.
2. Connect the station’s audio and a visual
Route the program audio into the encoder, and configure a visual scene for the YouTube feed. That may be a logo, program artwork, or another suitable image. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers external audio/video hardware, but the exact signal path depends on the station’s output connectors and the encoder computer’s inputs.

If the computer cannot accept a usable line-level feed from the station’s mixer or playout system, an audio interface may be needed. Check the output type and connector before buying anything; a separate device is not necessary for every setup.

3. Add the YouTube server URL and stream key
- In Live Control Room, find the stream’s server URL and stream key.
- Enter both in the encoder’s streaming settings, then save the configuration.
- Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
The encoder sends the station’s feed directly to YouTube. The station’s website player does not sit in this signal path.

4. Test, then start the public broadcast
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
- Check the YouTube watch page on a computer and a phone. Confirm that the program audio is audible, the visual appears correctly, and the stream is not unintentionally public during testing.
- Monitor the broadcast while it is running. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend verifying that a local recording is being written.
5. End the broadcast and preserve a copy if needed
End the stream in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the station needs a dependable copy, record locally and confirm that its rights cover the archive as well as the live transmission. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Clear music and other rights before going live
YouTube’s live-stream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights to use live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. The applicable permissions depend on the station’s country, catalog, territories, and agreements; YouTube’s general terms cannot determine whether a particular station’s existing licenses cover a simulcast or archive. Have the station’s rights administrator review its contracts and local requirements before launch. See YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects material, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the station to stop using it; if the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike may also end a broadcast. Importantly, a licensed stream can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask relevant rights owners about allowlisting before relying on a music-heavy simulcast. Archived live videos may receive Content ID claims after the stream ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Common problems and fixes
| What happens | What to check |
|---|---|
| Live streaming is not available in Studio | Verify the channel and check its live-stream restriction history. If this is the first enablement, allow up to 24 hours for access to become available. |
| No preview appears in Live Control Room | Confirm the encoder is running and that its server URL and stream key match the stream selected in Studio. If the key may have been exposed or is incorrect, reset it in Studio and update the encoder. |
| The stream appears, but the program audio is missing | Check that the station’s audio output is actually connected to and selected in the encoder. The required connection depends on the station’s mixer or playout system and the computer’s inputs. |
| YouTube interrupts a music stream | Review YouTube’s copyright notice and contact the relevant rights owner. A license alone may not prevent automated interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted in Content ID. |
| A long broadcast is missing from the channel afterward | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours. Use a local recording when a dependable archive is required. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a pre-recorded program or playlist that should loop continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running at home. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera feed, so it is an option for looping recorded material, not a replacement for a station’s live program source.
