Yes. A home computer can run a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream through encoder software such as OBS, provided the computer and internet connection can sustain the chosen settings. But “can run” does not mean “will never stop”: power, network, hardware, and encoder problems can interrupt it, and YouTube may not archive a broadcast that exceeds 12 hours.
What a home-computer setup needs
Your computer acts as the encoder host: it sends the prerecorded video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key created in YouTube Studio. The computer must remain powered, the encoder must keep running, and the home internet connection must continue sending data. A computer that can play a video is not necessarily able to encode and stream it reliably at your chosen resolution and frame rate.

- Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, check that the channel is verified and has no applicable live-streaming restriction within the past 90 days. Enable live streaming and allow for the first-time activation period, which YouTube says may take up to 24 hours.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream for an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel.
- Choose settings your connection and computer can sustain. Select the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the intended broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate. There is no universal PC specification that guarantees 24/7 performance.
- Run a real test. Start the encoder and inspect the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the stream public. Test the actual video, audio, scenes, and settings you plan to use, and watch for dropped frames, interruptions, or audio problems.
- Verify the full operating routine. Confirm that the video loops or advances as intended, the stream remains visible, and a local recording is being saved if you need an independent copy. YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality and checking failover rather than assuming the encoder will recover unnoticed.
How much upload bandwidth is enough?
Upload capacity—not download speed—is the relevant limit when sending a live feed. Add up the bitrate of the stream you intend to send, then measure whether your connection can sustain it. YouTube recommends keeping 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate; for example, if the total bitrate is 6 Mbps, aim for at least 7.2 Mbps of stable upload capacity. That margin is a recommendation, not a guarantee against ISP interruptions or congestion.

Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your selected resolution and frame rate, then test the real connection at the time and location where the stream will run. A connection disruption can break the stream. If the encoder struggles, reduce the workload—such as by lowering the resolution or frame rate, or simplifying demanding scenes—and test again.
OBS’s system requirements page cautions that hardware compatibility does not guarantee that a system can stream or record a particular workload. The page is dated 2021-08-25, so consult current OBS documentation for requirements for the version you install; the important practical point is to test the actual machine and configuration rather than rely on a generic minimum spec.

What can interrupt a 24/7 stream?
A home-hosted stream depends on several things continuing to work at once. YouTube advises creators to monitor the broadcast and test failover; it does not promise that those checks guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
- Internet interruption or upload instability: can stop delivery or degrade stream quality. Test the connection and leave bandwidth headroom.
- Computer, encoder, or thermal problems: can stall encoding or stop the software. Check CPU/GPU load and temperatures during a full-duration test, and avoid settings or scenes that push the machine beyond its capacity.
- Power loss or restarts: turn off the computer or network equipment and interrupt the feed. Review update and restart behavior before leaving the setup unattended. A battery backup may help with brief outages, but it does not replace reliable power or internet service.
- Encoder or stream failure: may require a restart or failover. YouTube recommends testing failover and watching the Live Control Room rather than assuming the stream is still healthy.
These are operational dependencies of running the encoder and connection at home, not a quantified failure rate. No particular computer, ISP, or home setup can be declared reliable for 24/7 operation without testing it.

Will YouTube save the entire 24-hour broadcast?
Do not count on YouTube’s automatic archive for a single continuous 24/7 stream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep a local recording and plan a separate archive workflow. Scheduling shorter broadcasts with planned restarts may help with archive planning, but it does not remove the need to retain your own copy if completeness is important.
Monitor whether the local recording is actually growing and confirm that you have enough storage for the intended duration. A live stream’s archive and your local recording are separate workflows; do not assume that one guarantees the other.

YouTube’s Terms of Service require the rights needed to distribute live content on Google services, including applicable music rights. Make sure you have the necessary rights for every video, track, and other element in the stream, and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.
Home computer or cloud service?
A home computer gives you direct control over the encoder, but it also means your computer, power, and home internet must stay available. A cloud service can host the stream instead; check the provider’s current features, terms, and archive options rather than assuming every service handles recovery or replay storage the same way.
