For Puppeteer screenshot comparisons, use pixelmatch when you already have equal-size decoded images and want a mismatch count or diff; choose Resemble.js when built-in scaling, ignored regions, or configurable diff styles solve a specific need. Neither is established as universally faster or more accurate. The comparison result is meaningful only when the baseline and candidate screenshots use consistent capture conditions.
How Puppeteer screenshots become comparison inputs
Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() returns image data as a base64 string or Uint8Array, depending on the API overload. Its screenshot options include fullPage, clip, omitBackground, and output type; PNG is the documented default. See the Page.screenshot() API and ScreenshotOptions.

Decide what the test should compare before choosing a library: the viewport, the entire page, or a clipped area. Capture the baseline and candidate with the same viewport, browser environment, page state, and screenshot options. This consistency is a practical requirement: image comparison reports differences in the inputs, including differences caused by capture setup.
pixelmatch vs. Resemble.js
| Decision | pixelmatch | Resemble.js |
|---|---|---|
| Input and result | Compares raw image arrays of equal dimensions; returns a differing-pixel count and can write a diff image. | Provides an image comparison API, including browser and Node.js usage. |
| Noise and sensitivity controls | Threshold from 0 to 1, anti-aliasing handling, and optional windowed mismatch counts. | Can ignore antialiasing and supports a return-early threshold. |
| Scaling and exclusions | The inspected README API does not document built-in rescaling or ignored bounding regions. | Documents scaling the second image to the first and supports bounding boxes and ignored areas. |
| Diff appearance | Configurable colors, mask, checkerboard, and alpha. | Configurable error color, error type, transparency, and output diff. |
| Runtime considerations | Project documentation describes raw typed-array support in Node and browsers with no dependencies. | Node usage relies on node-canvas, a pre-built dependency that may fail in some environments. |
These are documented API and setup differences, not measured accuracy or speed results. See the pixelmatch README and Resemble.js README.

When pixelmatch is the better fit
Choose pixelmatch for a small, direct comparison step when your pipeline already decodes both screenshots into same-size image data and needs a mismatch count, an optional diff image, or threshold and anti-aliasing controls. Its API accepts Buffer, Uint8Array, or Uint8ClampedArray, along with explicit width and height; the optional output is a same-size image buffer or null.
Control sensitivity and localized noise
The threshold ranges from 0 to 1. The documented default is 0.1; smaller values are more sensitive. The includeAA option controls whether anti-aliased pixels count, and the documented default is false. These settings change the mismatch report rather than proving that a result is correct. Calibrate them against stable fixtures from your own application and inspect the resulting diffs.
The optional windowSize changes the return value: instead of a whole-image mismatch total, it reports the highest count in any sliding N-by-N square. That can help distinguish scattered rendering noise from a compact change, but it does not remove the need to inspect diffs or tune the test.

When Resemble.js is the better fit
Choose Resemble.js when you need documented built-in controls such as scaling one image to the other’s dimensions, ignoring selected areas, using bounding boxes, or changing how the diff is rendered. Those capabilities can simplify a workflow, but decide deliberately what scaling or exclusions mean for your test: ignored pixels cannot reveal a regression in the ignored region.
For Node.js, the README demonstrates the promise-based compareImages API returning a buffer. It also warns that node-canvas is a pre-built dependency that can fail in some environments. The project describes options including installing without optional dependencies for browser-only analysis or considering package/build alternatives for Node.
The README also describes behavior for large images: when width or height exceeds 1200, pixels are skipped by default, configurable through largeImageThreshold. Confirm this behavior in the exact version you install before relying on it in a test; the project README may change over time.

Capture and compare a screenshot in Puppeteer
This example captures two PNG screenshots and compares them with pixelmatch. It uses pngjs to decode Puppeteer’s screenshot buffers and write the diff. Install the packages with npm install puppeteer pixelmatch pngjs; the script assumes the page can be loaded at the same URL and state for baseline and candidate captures.

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });

await browser.close();
}
Replace https://example.com with the page under test and provide the saved baseline at baseline.png. For a production test, add the project’s own pass/fail rule around the mismatch count; pixelmatch returns the count but does not define what level your application should accept.
Choose a threshold from fixtures, not guesswork
- Capture a baseline and repeat capture with no intended code or content change under the same setup.
- Inspect the diff to identify expected rendering variation and genuine differences.
- Adjust the threshold or anti-aliasing treatment only if the visual policy for the test allows it.
- Run the test against deliberate changes to confirm the checks still catch changes your team considers important.
Make Puppeteer setup reproducible in CI
Browser provisioning is separate from the comparison algorithm, but it affects the screenshot inputs. Puppeteer’s installation documentation says the puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing by default. puppeteer-core does not download Chrome and is intended for remote-browser or self-managed-browser use. Choose the package that matches how CI supplies the browser, and keep that arrangement consistent between baseline creation and test runs. See Puppeteer installation.

Troubleshoot common comparison failures
Dimensions do not match
pixelmatch requires equal image dimensions. Check viewport, device scale factor, full-page behavior, clipping, and the actual dimensions of the decoded PNGs. Make those consistent or use Resemble.js scaling only if resizing is acceptable for the test’s purpose.
Diffs show changes when the page looks unchanged
First verify the page state and capture settings, including viewport and browser setup. Then inspect the diff before changing thresholds. Pixelmatch’s documented anti-aliasing option and Resemble.js’s antialiasing controls can alter which pixels count, but neither establishes that a visual change is harmless.
Resemble.js fails to load in Node
Check whether the failure comes from the node-canvas dependency and whether your CI environment can install or use it. The project README discusses browser-only use without optional dependencies and alternatives for Node; verify the approach against the version and environment you deploy.

Large-image comparisons behave unexpectedly
For Resemble.js, verify whether the README’s documented large-image pixel-skipping behavior applies to the installed version and inspect its largeImageThreshold setting. Do not assume that an output was produced by examining every pixel unless that is established for your configuration.
