YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation is 8 Mbps for 720p30; CameraFi advises setting bitrate at about 75% of measured upload speed, so aim for roughly 10.7 Mbps of steady upload capacity for that test. For 1080p30, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps, which corresponds to roughly 18.7 Mbps steady upload under CameraFi’s headroom rule. These upload figures are calculations, not separate CameraFi thresholds. If speed varies or the stream breaks up, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
Choose settings that your connection can sustain
A sharper resolution is not automatically a clearer stream. Resolution, frame rate, encoder bitrate and stable upload capacity work together: if the bitrate is too low for the picture’s detail or movement, the image can look blocky; if the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, the stream may become unstable. CameraFi’s guidance is to measure upload speed—not download speed—and set bitrate at about 75% of the measured upload rate, allowing headroom for variation. CameraFi’s bitrate guidance dates to 2021, so treat its percentage as a practical heuristic rather than a guarantee.

The table below uses YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations. Match the row to the encoder, resolution and frame rate you actually use; these figures are not interchangeable with YouTube’s separate AV1 or H.265 recommendations. YouTube’s live encoder settings advise choosing settings that work reliably with your internet connection.
| Output | YouTube H.264 bitrate recommendation | Approximate steady upload at CameraFi’s 75% heuristic |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 10.7 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 10.7 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 18.7 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 22.7 Mbps |
The upload figures are calculated by dividing YouTube’s listed bitrate by 0.75; they are not published minimums or guarantees. If repeated measurements show lower or inconsistent upload capacity, choose a lower bitrate and/or resolution rather than forcing a setting the connection cannot maintain.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Run a controlled CameraFi Live test
- Check playback quality first. On YouTube, set the stream playback to its highest available quality. A low playback selection can look soft without proving the incoming stream itself is blurry. If pixelation remains at the highest quality, continue diagnosing; do not assume playback selection is the cause.
- Measure upload where you will stream. Run upload speed checks several times at the actual location and note both the results and how much they vary. CameraFi advises testing the connection you will use, since a single result may not represent changing mobile or Wi-Fi conditions.
- Use one network connection. Choose either Wi-Fi or mobile data for the test. CameraFi warns that switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data can disconnect a live stream. Select the connection that is more stable in that location; do not assume 5G, LTE or Wi-Fi is inherently best without testing it.
- Start with 720p30. Use the 8 Mbps H.264 recommendation as a reference only if H.264 is the encoder in use and your connection can sustain it. Apply CameraFi’s 75% headroom heuristic to repeated upload results. The available guidance does not establish that every CameraFi version exposes the same encoder controls, so use the resolution and bitrate options actually available in your app rather than relying on a presumed menu path.
- Test movement, not just a still frame. Record or preview motion similar to the real event—such as a person moving or a camera pan. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the actual stream and monitoring stream-health messages. Raise to 1080p30 only if the connection remains stable at the higher target; use 60 fps only when the motion benefits and both device and connection handle its listed bitrate.
- Change one setting at a time. If the image is persistently pixelated, test a higher bitrate only when upload capacity has headroom. If the stream stutters, drops or produces poor health messages, reduce bitrate first or step down resolution, then repeat the same movement test. This makes it easier to tell whether the problem is capacity or picture quality.
Reduce common mobile-streaming problems
- Upload speed fluctuates: lower the target bitrate or resolution, move to a more stable connection, and repeat upload checks. The 75% rule is intended to leave room for variation, not to promise uninterrupted service.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both active: CameraFi recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi because 2.4 GHz may interfere with Bluetooth. Try 5 GHz where available and compare stability.
- The phone becomes hot or sluggish: close unnecessary background apps and let the device cool before retesting. CameraFi notes that background apps can contribute to heat and poor device performance.
- Blur is most visible during movement: test with representative motion. Fast movement makes compression limits easier to notice; compare a lower resolution or frame rate against the bitrate the connection can reliably sustain.
- The stream looks soft only at first: YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats. Wait briefly and check the highest playback quality, but treat this only as one possibility—not a diagnosis of the particular stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
For uploaded videos that should play continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so your phone or computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for pre-recorded uploads and playlists, not a live camera feed.
