The most defensible starting setup for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is 1.50 horizontal sensitivity, 1.50 vertical sensitivity, a 0.85 ADS sensitivity multiplier, the Dynamic aim response curve, and Instant ADS sensitivity transition. Leave target aim assist on while you test. Set each stick’s minimum deadzone to the lowest value that does not cause drift, then adjust one setting at a time with the same short drill.

These values are a beta-based starting point, not an official universal solution. As of October 2, 2026, the cited review of Activision material had not found a complete published list of MW4 controller options, launch aim-assist tuning, response-curve behavior, deadzone scale, defaults, or recommended values. Treat the numbers below as a repeatable baseline that you can measure against, rather than settings to copy permanently.

Recommended MW4 controller settings at a glance

Start with this configuration before changing anything else. Keeping the two stick sensitivities equal removes one variable while you learn how the game feels on your controller.

Setting Starting value or option How to tune it
Horizontal sensitivity 1.50 Lower it if you regularly overshoot turns; raise it slightly if you cannot turn quickly enough toward a new threat.
Vertical sensitivity 1.50 Keep it equal to horizontal sensitivity initially. Split the values only when a specific vertical-aim problem justifies it.
ADS sensitivity multiplier 0.85 Lower it when you repeatedly overshoot while aiming down sights; raise it if your ADS tracking cannot keep up with moving targets.
Aim response curve Dynamic Compare it with Standard while every other value remains unchanged.
ADS sensitivity transition Instant Keep it if entering ADS feels predictable. Reassess after patches that alter aiming behavior.
Target aim assist On while testing MW4 launch aim-assist behavior is not fully documented, so use the same option while comparing other settings.
Controller vibration Off if it distracts you This is a preference choice; there is no established universal winner.
Trigger effect Off if resistance distracts you Hardware and personal preference determine whether resistance helps or interferes.
Minimum deadzones Lowest stable value Lower each stick until unwanted movement appears, then increase it just enough to stop the drift.
Aim-down-sight behavior Hold The cited beta recommendation uses Hold.
Interact/reload Tap to Reload The cited beta recommendation uses Tap to Reload.

The numerical preset comes from MW4 beta feedback documented by AIM Controllers, not from a published performance test by that company. That distinction matters: the values are useful as a controlled starting point, but they do not prove that every player will aim better with them.

Why there is no confirmed universal “best” setup yet

MW4-specific launch documentation remains incomplete in the material reviewed through October 2, 2026. The review of Activision materials did not identify an official list covering the game’s controller option names, aim-assist types, launch tuning, response-curve behavior, deadzone scale or default, sensitivity range, ADS multiplier default, vibration setting, or recommended values.

Consequently, older Call of Duty labels should not be treated as confirmed MW4 facts. Earlier games described Default aim assist as a middle ground, Precision as an option for already-accurate players, and Focusing as an option that could help newer players. Those descriptions are historical context only; they do not establish a winning MW4 aim-assist type. Keep the available assist enabled while you establish a baseline, and judge the result by repeatable corrections and tracking rather than by a label or a screenshot.

Set up a controlled baseline before tuning

  1. Record the current configuration. Save a screenshot or photograph of every controller and aim value before making changes. This gives you a known return point if an experiment feels worse.
  2. Enter the controller settings menu. MW4’s final menu names and layout were not fully published in the cited official-material review, so use the labels shown by your installed build rather than assuming an older game’s path is identical.
  3. Apply the baseline values. Set both stick sensitivities to 1.50, ADS multiplier to 0.85, Dynamic response curve, Instant ADS transition, Hold for aim-down-sight behavior, and Tap to Reload for the interaction/reload option when those controls are available.
  4. Leave target aim assist on during comparison. Changing assist and sensitivity simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which change helped or hurt.
  5. Disable vibration or trigger effects only when they distract you. Do not treat either switch as an automatic accuracy upgrade; the useful test is whether removing the sensation makes your corrections more consistent.
  6. Set deadzones before fine sensitivity work. Use the lowest stable minimum deadzone for each stick, then run the same drill described below.

Use one repeatable drill instead of copying popular values

MW4 Field Manual’s settings guidance emphasizes a repeatable drill rather than blind copying. The purpose is to make each change comparable. Use a practice area or a low-pressure match with stationary and moving targets, and repeat the sequence in the same order every time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Target acquisition: move the crosshair from one stationary target to another at different distances. Watch for stopping short, overshooting, or needing a second correction.
  2. ADS tracking: aim down sights and follow a moving target for several seconds. Note whether the reticle lags behind, cuts ahead, or wobbles around the target.
  3. Turning: begin facing one direction, then switch to a marked threat to the side or behind you. Record whether you can complete the turn without lifting your thumb or losing control at the stop.
  4. Repeat the same route: do not change targets, distance, weapon, or movement pattern between two setting comparisons. Consistency is more informative than a single impressive run.
  5. Change one category: alter sensitivity, ADS, response curve, or deadzone separately. Keep the other categories fixed and repeat all three tests.

Keep a value when it lets you repeat small corrections, tracking, and turns with fewer emergency movements. Popularity is not a measurement, and a setting that feels fast in a menu can still be difficult to stop accurately in a fight.

How to tune horizontal and vertical sensitivity

Horizontal sensitivity

Horizontal sensitivity controls how quickly the view moves as you push the aim stick left or right. Start at 1.50. If the crosshair repeatedly passes the target during the acquisition drill, reduce the value in small steps. If you cannot rotate to a side or rear threat without running out of stick travel, raise it slightly.

Do not increase horizontal sensitivity simply because a faster turn looks impressive. The useful question is whether you can stop on the target and make a small correction immediately afterward. A lower value can be better for a player who wins fights through controlled tracking; a higher value can be better for someone who is consistently late to close-range threats.

Vertical sensitivity

Keep vertical sensitivity at 1.50 while you establish a baseline. Equal horizontal and vertical values make it easier to identify whether a problem is caused by your stick movement, ADS multiplier, or response curve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Split the values only for a clear, repeatable reason. For example, if horizontal target acquisition is reliable but vertical recoil or elevation adjustments consistently overshoot, change vertical sensitivity alone and rerun the same drill. Avoid changing both axes at once because you will lose the comparison point.

How to tune the 0.85 ADS multiplier

The 0.85 ADS multiplier slows the aiming response relative to your general look speed. It is a sensible starting point when you want the ability to turn quickly while making smaller corrections through the sight picture.

Lower the multiplier when ADS corrections overshoot

If your reticle repeatedly crosses past a moving target or you oscillate around a stationary target, reduce the multiplier in a small step. Re-run the acquisition and tracking portions of the drill. Stop lowering it when tracking begins to lag behind targets or when you cannot move between threats quickly enough.

Dynamic versus Standard aim response curve

Dynamic is the recommended starting option in the beta-based preset. Compare it directly with Standard rather than judging either curve in isolation. Keep 1.50/1.50 sensitivity, 0.85 ADS, the same deadzones, and the same aim-assist state while you switch curves.

Choose Dynamic when it improves controlled corrections

Keep Dynamic if the first part of a stick movement gives you precise control and the later part lets you turn quickly without a sudden jump. Confirm this in both stationary-target acquisition and a fast turn. If you can make small adjustments without fighting the stick, the curve is doing what you need.

Choose Standard when its response is easier to predict

Standard may feel more straightforward if you prefer a consistent relationship between stick movement and camera movement. Use it when the same drill produces fewer overshoots and less hesitation than Dynamic. There is no published MW4 result that makes one curve the universal winner, and the final launch implementation may change after updates.

Deadzone tuning: stop drift without making aim sluggish

Minimum deadzone is the amount of stick movement the game ignores around the center. A setting that is too high can make the first correction feel delayed; a setting that is too low can allow a worn or noisy stick to move the camera or character by itself.

  1. Lower the minimum deadzone for one stick while the controller is resting.
  2. Watch for camera rotation, character movement, or a reticle that creeps without intentional input.
  3. When unwanted movement first appears, raise the value slightly until the drift stops.
  4. Repeat the process independently for the other stick. The two sticks do not have to use identical values.
  5. Test again during the acquisition and tracking drills. A deadzone that is stable while the controller is idle can still feel too large during tiny corrections.

Use the lowest value that prevents unwanted movement, not the lowest number available in the menu. Stick wear, manufacturing variation, temperature, and controller connection can all change the point at which drift appears. If drift returns, recheck the deadzone before changing sensitivity.

Deadzone customization is worth taking seriously: an Activision statistic cited in the review reported that more than 40% of players customized Deadzone Inputs in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in 2023. That is historical context, not a MW4 player statistic, but it illustrates why a single default cannot suit every controller.

Aim assist: what to use while testing

Leave target aim assist on while you establish your baseline. The available MW4 documentation does not yet confirm the launch behavior, strength, or final names of aim-assist types, so turning assist off during a sensitivity comparison would add another uncontrolled variable.

If MW4 presents multiple aim-assist types, test them only after sensitivity, ADS, response curve, and deadzones are stable. Keep the same targets and movement route for each comparison. Earlier-game descriptions of Default, Precision, and Focusing can help explain the labels, but they are not evidence that any one of those choices is best in MW4.

Vibration, trigger effects, and button behavior

Vibration

Turn controller vibration off if the rumble masks subtle stick feedback or distracts you during tracking. Leave it on if the tactile cue helps you recognize events without disturbing your aim. The setting is personal and hardware dependent; the available evidence does not establish a universal accuracy advantage either way.

Trigger effects

Disable trigger resistance when it makes firing feel delayed, increases fatigue, or interferes with a smooth pull. Keep it enabled only if you can press through the resistance consistently and it does not disrupt your timing. Trigger effects change the physical feel of the input, not the underlying aim curve.

Aim-down-sight and reload choices

The cited beta recommendation uses Hold for aim-down-sight behavior and Tap to Reload for the interaction/reload option. These choices reduce ambiguity during the baseline test: you know whether ADS is active because the button is held, and a tap prioritizes reloading when the context allows it. If your movement habits make another behavior more reliable, change that control after the core aim settings are measured rather than at the same time.

Are back paddles worth using?

A PS5 controller with rear paddles can be a practical fit if you want to keep your right thumb on the aiming stick while jumping, crouching or sliding, reloading or interacting, and switching weapons. The AIM MW4 PS5 FPS controller guide describes a design with TMR sticks, interchangeable stick tops, rear paddles, Active Triggers, and a USB-C cable. Its suggested paddle assignments cover jump, crouch or slide, reload or interact, and weapon switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The benefit is reachability: a rear paddle can perform a face-button action without forcing your aiming thumb away from the stick. That can make movement and aiming easier to combine, especially when a fight requires a slide or jump during tracking.

Do not treat paddles as proof of higher accuracy. They add another control surface that must be learned, and the useful questions are whether the paddles are comfortable, whether they can be reached without accidental presses, whether the stick remains stable, and whether the controller is compatible with your platform. Hardware changes access and comfort; practice and a stable drill still determine whether the setup helps you.

Troubleshooting common symptoms

Symptom during the drill First change to test Reason
You overshoot stationary targets while hip-firing Lower horizontal sensitivity slightly The general look response is faster than you can stop accurately.
You cannot turn to a side or rear threat Raise horizontal sensitivity slightly You are running out of stick travel before completing the turn.
ADS tracking passes ahead of moving targets Lower the ADS multiplier The sight response is too fast for your correction timing.
ADS tracking remains behind a steady strafe Raise the ADS multiplier slightly The sight response cannot keep up with the target.
The camera or character moves without input Raise that stick’s minimum deadzone just enough to stop drift The current center threshold is below the controller’s stable point.
Small corrections feel delayed Lower the relevant minimum deadzone, provided drift does not return A large deadzone is filtering intentional micro-movements.
Dynamic feels unpredictable Compare Standard with all other values unchanged A direct A/B test separates curve preference from sensitivity changes.
Rumble or trigger resistance breaks concentration Turn the distracting effect off Removing an unwanted physical cue can improve consistency for that player.

Recheck settings after patches or controller changes

Keep a record of the values that worked in your drill. Re-run the drill after a major MW4 update, after changing controllers or stick tops, or when drift appears. Aim response, aim assist, deadzone scaling, and menu labels were not fully documented for launch in the cited review, so a patch can change how a familiar number feels even when the number itself remains on screen.

When a new update feels different, restore your recorded baseline first. Test acquisition, tracking, and turning before changing anything. If the baseline no longer behaves the same, compare Dynamic and Standard again and recalibrate deadzones before making broad sensitivity changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Use 1.50 horizontal and vertical sensitivity, 0.85 ADS, Dynamic, Instant ADS transition, Hold ADS, Tap to Reload, and the lowest stable deadzones as your MW4 starting point. Keep aim assist on while testing, and disable vibration or trigger effects only when they distract you. Then tune one category at a time with the same acquisition, tracking, and turning drill. This approach is more reliable than treating a beta preset or an older game’s aim-assist labels as an official universal answer.
