What does a cable box do?
A cable box is a type of set-top box: hardware and software designed primarily to receive television or related services and provide video output to a display. Cable is one of the delivery methods included in the U.S. Department of Energy’s definition of a set-top box (U.S. Department of Energy).

In practice, the box sits between the cable service and the TV. It receives and processes signals, then delivers picture and sound to the display. If a provider encrypts channels, its box—or another authorized compatible device—can handle access to programming included with the subscription. The FCC has explained that encryption helps limit cable service to authorized subscribers (FCC Report 11-153).
Features vary by provider and model. A cable box may have capabilities beyond receiving and outputting TV service, but do not assume a particular box includes a DVR, streaming apps, voice control, or a specific resolution.

Do I need a cable box for every TV?
There is no universal answer. A compatible TV tuner may receive some unencrypted or basic cable channels without a separate box. Encrypted channels, subscription tiers, and provider-specific services can require a box or another device the provider authorizes. A TV’s “cable-ready” label alone does not guarantee access to every channel or feature.
Ask your cable provider which channels and features work on each TV without its box, and what equipment it supports instead. The answer can depend on the provider, local cable system, subscription, and TV.

Can I watch cable without a box?
Sometimes, for some channels. A TV with a compatible cable tuner may be able to receive unencrypted service directly. That does not mean it can decode encrypted programming or use interactive provider services. The FCC’s historical guidance discusses CableCARD-compatible equipment and limitations for two-way functions such as video-on-demand as described at the time; it should not be read as a statement of current, universal provider policy (FCC Report 06-11).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore disconnecting or returning a box, ask the provider whether your desired channels work without it, whether an alternative device is currently supported, and which features you would lose. Federal regulations address cable-ready consumer equipment, but that does not establish compatibility with every provider’s present-day service (47 CFR § 15.123).

What’s the difference between a cable box and a digital adapter?
The names and functions depend on the provider. A full TV box is a receiver for television service. Some providers also offer a simpler digital adapter with fewer capabilities. For example, Xfinity describes its TV Box as a digital cable box or receiver and lists a digital adapter separately (Xfinity support). That terminology is specific to Xfinity; another provider may use different names or offer different functions.
Make sure you are identifying a TV receiver rather than a modem. A modem is used for internet access; a cable TV box is used to receive television service. A box or adapter does not necessarily provide internet service.

Can I buy my own cable box?
Do not assume a retail cable box or CableCARD device will work with your service. Compatibility and authorization vary by provider and system, and the FCC material describing CableCARD is historical context—not proof that a provider currently supports a particular device or service. Ask your provider for supported models and alternatives before buying equipment.
Check the details that matter for your setup:
- Whether the device is accepted and can be authorized on your provider’s system.
- Which channels and subscription tiers it supports.
- Whether it supports the interactive features you use.
- Whether recording is available, if you need it.
- How it connects to your TV.
- Whether using it changes any equipment charges on your account.
Rental charges, current CableCARD access, and retail-device compatibility are provider-specific; confirm those details directly rather than relying on a general equipment listing.

Can I replace my cable box remote?
Choose a remote that matches the exact converter or receiver model and your provider’s service. Federal law addresses commercially available remote controls for compatible converter equipment, but that does not mean every remote works with every box (47 U.S.C. § 544a). Check the provider’s compatibility information or ask for the supported remote for your specific model before purchasing a replacement.
