You run and maintain the service yourself; MUFAP’s own pages remain the place to verify current NAVs and their validity dates.
Does MUFAP provide an API for its fund data?
MUFAP provides public web pages with the underlying information. Its Fund Directory lists fund names, asset management companies (AMCs), NAVs, offer prices, categories and risk profiles. The NAV / Daily Prices Announcement page presents daily values with a report date and individual NAV validity dates. Use these official pages to check a current value; a project’s cached or scraped output is a separate copy.

Saad Salman’s article says MUFAP’s directory page appeared to use JSON endpoints, but requests copied from a browser returned HTTP 500 when he tried them outside a browser. He speculates that session or anti-forgery behavior might be involved, while saying he did not investigate the cause. That is the author’s account and hypothesis, not an independently confirmed explanation of MUFAP’s endpoint behavior.

How Salman’s free API is described to work
In his article, Salman describes a small pipeline: a scraper parses the public directory with Cheerio, a plain JSON file stores a snapshot, and an Express server exposes the result at GET /api/funds. The fields he lists are fund name, AMC, NAV, offer price and category. The project repository describes the related project and dataset. These are published descriptions; the endpoint and repository have not been independently tested for this article.
#1 Best Overall
The project is aimed at developers who want programmatic access to a snapshot without building their own parser. It is a narrow, self-hosted tool, not a managed market-data service with a stated uptime commitment. The article reports an MIT license; check the repository for the license and current implementation before adopting or redistributing the code.
What data and update cadence does it cover?
Salman describes MUFAP as publishing updated NAVs once per business day and the project’s default scraper as running daily while skipping weekends. That describes the intended schedule, not a guarantee that every run succeeds or that a served snapshot is current. Check its timestamp or compare the returned values and validity dates with MUFAP before using the data.

The article also describes added features beyond the initial snapshot: per-fund NDJSON NAV histories and GET /api/funds/:id/history with date bounds; single-fund lookup; filters for category, AMC and name; Shariah flags; benchmark mappings; expense-ratio enrichment; and a daily public dataset. Repository and dataset contents can change, so confirm the current endpoints, fields and data timestamps there before depending on a particular feature.
Salman’s July 2026 article and its updates give different figures for different stages or components: 500+ funds for the project’s scope, 531 funds in a comparison, 549 funds in an update about Shariah metadata, and 554 funds in an update about the backfilled dataset. The same article reports 432,000 history entries for that initial backfill. These are dated, author-reported figures, not a single current count; they should not be treated as proof of today’s coverage. Read Salman’s article and updates for the context of each figure.

What you take on by self-hosting
The convenience of a free API comes with operational work. Your system must run the scraper, serve the saved data and make failures visible. A successful HTTP response alone does not establish freshness: a scraper can fail while an older snapshot remains available.
- Deployment: install and run the project in an environment you control, and keep its runtime and dependencies working.
- Refresh monitoring: check that scheduled runs complete and record when the snapshot was last updated.
- Data checks: compare representative NAVs and validity dates with MUFAP’s official announcement, particularly after a parser or source-page change.
- Consumer safeguards: handle missing fields, stale data and request failures in the application using the API.
- Maintenance: review repository changes and adapt the scraper if the public directory’s structure changes.
Salman’s article includes local setup commands and says the service starts at localhost:4000/api/funds. Treat those as the author’s described setup, not a verified, current installation recipe; consult the repository’s current instructions before deploying.

When a commercial data service may fit better
The options solve different problems. MUFAP is the primary public reference for its directory and daily NAV announcements. Salman’s project is a free, author-described way to turn that public information into a self-hosted API and dataset. Capital Stake advertises a broader Pakistani mutual-fund data product, including NAV history, AUM, holdings, sector allocation and payouts; its product information directs prospective customers to contact the provider or request a consultation.
Recommended Free Tools
| Option | Coverage and access | Who operates it | Commercial terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| MUFAP pages | Public directory fields and daily NAV announcements with validity dates; web pages rather than the described self-hosted JSON API. | MUFAP publishes the source pages; you check them directly. | Not stated on the cited pages. |
| Pakistan Mutual Funds API project | Author-described fund snapshots and additional history and metadata features; JSON endpoints and a public dataset are described in the article. | You deploy, monitor and maintain your instance or integration. | The author describes it as free and MIT-licensed; verify current repository terms. |
| Capital Stake | Vendor-advertised NAV history, AUM, holdings, allocation and payouts. Its Single Fund Overview API documentation shows bearer-token authentication. | Vendor API; integration still requires a client and token. | Pricing is not stated in the cited product information; contact the provider for terms. No service commitment is independently established here. |
A vendor-managed option may be worth evaluating if you need portfolio data beyond NAVs, authenticated API access, or less responsibility for scraping and hosting. Check its coverage, freshness, commercial terms and service commitments directly with the provider before relying on it. Capital Stake’s feature descriptions are vendor claims, not independent service measurements.
Best Value
Choose based on the job, not just the word “free”
- For checking a current NAV or its validity date: consult MUFAP’s official daily announcement.
- For a low-cost JSON workflow when you can operate the software: inspect Salman’s repository, confirm the current data and endpoints, and plan for monitoring and maintenance.
- For broader fund data or a vendor-operated API: assess a commercial service’s documented coverage, authentication, cost and service terms against your requirements.
None of these data-access choices is a recommendation to buy or sell a fund. Verify values at the source and assess a fund on its own merits.
