The R beside your phone’s signal bars usually means it is roaming: your phone is connected to a network other than its home network or normal service area. It does not tell you whether you will be charged. That depends on your carrier, plan and location.
What the R means
On phones that use this indicator, R stands for roaming. Motorola describes roaming as a connection to a different cellular or mobile network, and a Samsung SM-J400F manual identifies an R beside signal bars as roaming outside the normal service area. Motorola Support explains its status-bar icons; the Samsung definition is specific to that model.

Roaming is not limited to international travel. A carrier may use another provider’s network in some domestic areas, too. SaskTel, for example, identifies its “SaskTel R” indicator as the Rogers network in its guide to wireless network indicators.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes R mean you will be charged?
No—not by itself. The icon reports network status, not a price or billing decision. Charges and included service depend on your carrier’s terms for your plan and the network or destination you are using. SaskTel says use of the Bell, Telus or Rogers partner networks is charged according to the customer’s wireless rate plan; that is SaskTel-specific guidance, not a rule for every carrier.

Before using cellular data while roaming, check your carrier’s current terms for your plan and location. The symbol alone cannot establish whether calls, texts or data are included or incur additional charges.
Why the indicator may look different
The display varies by phone, carrier and region. Some Android phones show an R, while others may show a network name or a different indicator. Apple’s guide to iPhone status icons documents cellular and network indicators but does not list a general R roaming icon. An absent R therefore does not establish that a phone is not roaming; check the network details and device documentation.

Is roaming turned on?
The R indicator and the data-roaming setting are not the same thing. R indicates a network connection status; it does not establish a universal rule that mobile data roaming is enabled. Check the data-roaming control on your specific phone and review your plan before changing it. Menu names and steps differ by model, so use the device maker’s instructions rather than relying on a generic path.
