Yes—cable management matters most when it keeps cords away from sharp edges, doorways, pinch points, and other places they can be damaged. For a desk or home entertainment setup, tidying cables can also keep them out of the way, but the available sources do not quantify that convenience. The practical goal is not to make every cable invisible: it is to route and support each one without pinching or damaging it.
Why cable management matters
The clearest reason is physical protection. In U.S. general-industry workplaces, OSHA requires flexible cords and cables to be protected from accidental damage, citing sharp corners, projections, doorways, and other pinch points as examples. It also requires supports such as ties, straps, or staples to be installed without damaging the cable. (OSHA, 29 CFR 1910.305(a)(2)(x).)

At home, the same hazards are useful to consider when routing loose equipment cords: a cable across a walkway can be caught or tripped over, while one crushed by furniture or rubbed against a sharp edge can be damaged. The workplace rule cited here is not a universal home-desk mandate; it applies to U.S. general-industry workplaces.

What a tidy setup should accomplish
Start with the routing problem, not the accessory. Decide whether a cable needs to be moved out of a walkway, protected where it crosses an edge or doorway, or gathered so excess slack does not interfere with use. Choose a method that solves that problem while keeping the cable free of damaging pressure or abrasion.

- High quality material:XHF Adhesive Cable Clips are manufactured from Strong Adhesive and PA66 nylon
- Widely used: USB Cable, Ethernet Cable, Outdoor String Lights, LED Strip Lights, Tachograph Cable, TV Cable, Desk and under Desk cables, etc
- Size: Base 5/8" x 5/8", inner diameter of buckle 1/4" x 2/5",120pcs
- Suitable for a variety of object surface: whether glass, wall, ceramic, wood, metal, plastic, they can stay firmly on the surface
- No residue: even if you want to remove them, it can easily tear the whole piece of glue, without any stain
- Loose cord near a walkway: reroute or secure it so it is not left where people walk.
- Cord crossing an edge or doorway: change the route if possible, and protect it from rubbing, crushing, or being caught.
- Slack under a desk: gather or support it so it does not snag or interfere with equipment use.
Which cable-management method fits?
| Method | Useful for | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable ties | Gathering loose slack or keeping a small group of cords together. | Secure without crushing, sharply bending, or otherwise damaging the cables. |
| Clips or straps | Guiding or supporting a cord along a desk or another route. | Choose a placement that does not create a pinch point or abrade the cord. |
| Cable sleeve | Containing several cords along a shared route. | Do not assume that enclosing cables makes every route safe; check for heat, pressure, and damage concerns appropriate to the equipment. |
| Under-desk tray | Supporting and keeping cables beneath a desk rather than on the floor. | Keep cords from being pinched by the desk, chair, or stored items. |
These are optional tools, not a checklist of items every setup needs. OSHA identifies ties, straps, staples, or similar fittings as possible supports in its workplace rule, but the fitting must not damage the cable.
Loose equipment cords are not fixed wiring
Standards for electrical-installation products have defined scopes; they are not blanket instructions for every household cable. IEC 61537:2023, published January 24, 2023, covers requirements and tests for cable tray and ladder systems intended to support and accommodate cables in electrical or communication installations. IEC 62275:2022, published November 22, 2022, covers cable ties and their associated fixing devices for wiring systems in electrical installations. IEC 61386-1 addresses conduit systems used to protect and manage insulated conductors and cables within its electrical and communication system scope.

For fixed wiring, follow applicable local requirements and use qualified help where required. Do not treat a consumer cable tray, tie, or conduit as automatically suitable for an electrical installation.
Does cable clutter itself create a fire risk?
The sources cited here establish cable-protection and installation-product requirements; they do not establish that every untidy desk creates a fire risk, quantify outcomes from cable management, or provide a universal bundling rule for consumer cables. Avoid tightly bundling cords or choosing an installation method based on a general fire claim alone. If a cable or its insulation is damaged, stop using it and address the damage rather than hiding it in a sleeve or tray.

What OSHA says about computer workstations
OSHA says there are no specific OSHA standards that apply to computer workstations; existing electrical-safety standards still apply in office environments. Its workstation overview is available at OSHA’s Computer Workstations — Overview. This distinction matters: a general workstation page does not replace the applicable electrical rules for a workplace, and the cited workplace requirements should not be presented as a universal household code.
