The clearest evidence is about repair habits and disposal choices, not a change over time in what people prioritize when purchasing.
What Canadian evidence says about electronics and sustainability
Environment and Climate Change Canada commissioned Pollara Strategic Insights Inc. to survey 2,000 Canadian adults online from February 27 to March 12, 2025. In that survey, 31% said they usually or always repair electronics when they break. For comparison, the figures were 45% for large appliances and 44% for furniture. The report describes electronics and small appliances as more disposable than durable, higher-cost products that change less often. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s survey report notes that an online survey cannot be assigned a margin of error; it provides ±2.2 percentage points only as a probability-sample guideline for a sample of this size, 19 times out of 20.

That is a snapshot of reported behaviour, not proof of a rising trend. Statistics Canada’s 2025 Households and the Environment Survey questionnaire asks whether people consider repairable, longer-lived, refurbished, or environmentally labelled products, but the questions themselves are not results. The available evidence does not establish how many Canadian electronics buyers choose devices primarily for environmental reasons or whether that share is growing. Statistics Canada’s 2025 survey instrument shows what was asked, not how respondents answered.
Why consumers replace electronics instead of repairing them
Among 2025 survey respondents who sometimes bought new electronics instead of repairing damaged or broken products, practical obstacles were common. The reasons were not mutually exclusive, so respondents could identify more than one:

- 54% said the product was not designed to be repaired.
- 49% said they were not handy or did not know how to repair it.
- 46% cited a lack of skills or technology.
- 38% cited cost.
- 30% cited lack of access to repair services.
These responses point to a useful distinction: a product may be technically repairable yet still be difficult or uneconomic for a particular owner to fix. Canada’s federal repairability consultation defines repairability in terms that include ease of disassembly, cost, and the time needed to obtain parts or independent repair service; it also addresses durability and interoperability. The online consultation closed on September 26, 2024, so it should not be mistaken for an open consultation or a comprehensive enacted federal right-to-repair regime. Repair or replace? Compare the practical trade-offs
There is no universal answer for every phone, computer, or household device. Compare the cost and likely useful life of each option rather than assuming repair is always cheaper or replacement is always wasteful.

Repairability is more than a marketing label: the ability to open a product, source components, and find a service provider can determine whether repair is practical. The federal consultation discusses these dimensions, but it does not provide a universal ranking of electronics by environmental impact.

A refurbished device can be an alternative to buying new, but the label alone does not tell you the device’s condition or the protection you receive. Federal consumer guidance describes refurbished digital devices as products refreshed by certified retailers to restore functionality to an almost-as-new state, while noting that many retailers provide a limited warranty. Those are general descriptions, not guarantees for every listing. The Office of Consumer Affairs’ guidance on green claims and consumers recommends checking the particular seller and product details.

- Refurbisher: Find out who inspected and refreshed the device, and whether the seller provides support.
- Condition grade: Check what the grade means, including any cosmetic wear, battery condition, or included accessories.
- Warranty: Read the duration, coverage, exclusions, and process for making a claim.
- Returns: Confirm the return window and conditions before buying.
- Fit for purpose: Verify that the model, software support, capacity, and performance suit your needs.
Refurbishment may extend a device’s use, but it does not by itself establish that one product has a lower lifecycle impact than another. The sources available here provide no universal lifecycle comparison for particular electronics.
How Canadian households handle unwanted electronics
Statistics Canada’s July 8, 2025 article reports household survey results for 2023. Sixteen percent of households said they had unwanted small appliances. For each of computers, televisions, and cellular phones, the figure was 14% of households—not 14% of all devices discarded. Statistics Canada’s article on unwanted electronics also shows that disposal routes differed by item.

- For unwanted phones, 16% returned them to a supplier or retailer in 2023, up from 12% in 2021.
- For unwanted phones, 33% used a depot in 2023, down from 40% in 2021. The share of households reporting unwanted phones remained 14% in both years.
These figures describe reported household behaviour for specific devices and years. They are not a measure of the share of all electronics that was recycled, reused, or discarded.

Where to take old electronics in Canada
Use a local electronics depot, drop-off centre, or retailer take-back program when available; options can vary by municipality and device. The federal Office of Consumer Affairs advises against putting electronics in household garbage and notes that most municipalities operate electronics recycling programs. Check your municipality’s waste guidance or the product supplier’s return options before you go. If the device still works, direct reuse, donation, or trade-in can keep it in use rather than sending it straight to recycling.

How to assess sustainability claims
Be specific about the environmental attribute being claimed. A recycled-content statement, green label, recyclable packaging, or refurbished status alone does not establish that a device is “eco-friendly” overall. Ask what the claim covers, whether it is backed by a recognized certification or verifiable product information, and how it relates to durability, repair, energy use, and end-of-life options. The evidence cited here does not identify one universal Canadian ecolabel or provide a lifecycle ranking that applies across device categories.
A practical decision checklist
- If your current device still works: Keep using it if it continues to meet your needs; consider donation or trade-in when you no longer need it.
- If it breaks: Get a repair estimate and check parts, service access, turnaround, and likely remaining useful life.
- If you need another device: Compare new and refurbished options, including condition, support, warranty, return terms, durability, and energy use where relevant.
- When it is no longer usable: Check local recycling or take-back arrangements rather than placing it in household garbage.
No single option is best for every device or household. A sound choice depends on what can actually be repaired or reused, its cost and expected service life, and the available end-of-life route.
