The useful comparison is not just screen size: weigh resolution, panel characteristics, motion, connections, and physical adjustment together.
Start with what you will use it for
Choose the main job first, because it determines which specifications matter most. Office work often benefits from clear text and an ergonomic setup; gaming places more emphasis on motion; and color-sensitive creative work makes color reproduction and viewing consistency more important. For mixed use, decide which task you most want the display to serve, then check that it remains suitable for the others.

Also consider the computer that will drive the monitor. A display’s advertised resolution or refresh rate is useful only if the computer and its video connection can support the mode you intend to use. HP’s monitor guide and LG’s UK buying guide both frame selection around use and hardware.
Compare screen size and resolution together
Screen size describes the physical display; resolution describes how many pixels make up its image. A higher resolution can provide more detail and workspace, but it also asks more of the computer’s graphics hardware. Size should make sense for your desk and viewing distance, not just look impressive on a specification sheet.

HP lists these common resolution examples:
- 1920 × 1080 (Full HD or 1080p): a common starting point for general use.
- 2560 × 1440 (Quad HD or 1440p): a higher-resolution option that can provide more detail and workspace.
- 3840 × 2160 (4K or UHD): a still higher-resolution option, with greater graphics demands.
These are examples from a manufacturer guide, not a ranking or a guarantee that a particular resolution is right for every screen size or task. LG’s advice is to choose size and resolution based on usage, desk space, and hardware.
Understand the panel trade-offs
Panel technology influences color, viewing angles, contrast, and response behavior. No panel label by itself establishes the quality of a specific monitor; use it to identify trade-offs, then assess the individual model against your priorities.

Match motion specifications to your needs
Refresh rate, measured in hertz (Hz), indicates how often a display updates. Higher refresh rates can make motion look smoother, especially in games, when the computer can output the corresponding mode. HP gives 60 Hz, 144 Hz, and 240 Hz or above as example refresh-rate classes; these are guide examples, not a market-wide statistic or a promise about performance.

Response time describes how quickly a pixel changes state. A published response-time figure is not a standalone measure of motion clarity: consider it alongside the specific display, its operating mode, and your intended use. For gaming, HP identifies NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync as adaptive-sync technologies intended to provide smoother play. Check that the monitor and computer both support the particular feature and mode you want.

Check ports and mounting before you buy
Confirm that the monitor has an input compatible with the computer, and that the connection supports your desired resolution and refresh rate. HP lists HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C among monitor connections, but the presence of a port alone does not establish support for every display mode. Check the specifications for both devices and the connection in between.
Then make sure the monitor fits the physical setup. Review the stand’s height, tilt, and swivel adjustments if those matter at your desk. If you plan to use an arm or wall mount, verify that the monitor has VESA mounting holes and that the mounting pattern and screws are compatible. Use a practical comparison checklist
When you have specific models in view, compare each against the same needs rather than relying on one headline specification:
- Use-case fit: office, gaming, creative color work, or a mix.
- Image detail: resolution in relation to screen size, desk space, and viewing setup.
- Motion: refresh rate and response behavior, matched to the computer and the work or games involved.
- Image characteristics: panel technology, color, viewing angle, and contrast.
- Compatibility: available video ports and support for the resolution and refresh rate you want.
- Workspace fit: the monitor’s physical dimensions, stand adjustment, and any needed VESA mount.
- Cost and warranty: compare the seller’s current terms and the specific model’s warranty at purchase time; there is no universal warranty rule established by the general buying guides.
What a buying guide can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer guides are useful for defining terms and identifying features to compare, but their technical descriptions are not independent tests of particular monitors. HP’s examples and LG’s technology descriptions should be treated as general guidance, not proof that one model or panel is superior. Prices, availability, return terms, and warranty coverage depend on the specific model, seller, and location, so verify them when comparing actual listings.
