It is designed to avoid uploading files to a cloud storage account, but it is not server-free: connection setup uses signaling infrastructure, and a relay may be used when a direct connection cannot be made.
What ButterShare does
ButterShare lets a sender select files or folders and share a room link, QR code, or code with a recipient. Both people open the transfer in a browser. The product describes the transfer as peer-to-peer (P2P): browsers negotiate a WebRTC connection and stream the file data between devices. Received data is written locally using browser storage mechanisms, according to ButterShare’s product page and its technical documentation.

The maker’s stated motivation is to avoid the cloud upload and storage steps associated with conventional file-transfer services. That is ButterShare’s product framing, not an independently verified comparison of other services.
How the connection works—and when it may use a relay
For a transfer, the browsers first need to find and negotiate a connection. ButterShare says signaling servers support that setup; they are distinct from the file payload. If network restrictions prevent a direct device-to-device connection, the service may use a TURN relay. In that case, encrypted traffic passes through the relay, so the connection is not a direct network path.

ButterShare’s security documentation says WebRTC DataChannels use DTLS encryption and that its signaling servers do not store or inspect file payloads. These are claims made by the service. The available material does not establish an independent security audit, penetration test, or verification of server practices, so it should not be treated as an independent assurance of security or privacy.
Does ButterShare upload files to a server?
ButterShare says file contents normally travel between the sender’s and recipient’s devices rather than being uploaded to a file-storage server. However, signaling infrastructure is involved in arranging the connection, and a TURN relay may carry encrypted packets if a direct connection fails. “Peer-to-peer” therefore describes the intended data path, not a guarantee that no server participates in any connection.

Is there really no file-size limit?
The product says it imposes no application-level file-size cap. That does not guarantee that every file can be sent successfully: available disk space, browser capabilities, and network conditions affect practical transfer size and reliability. ButterShare distinguishes browsers that support streaming to the Origin Private File System (OPFS) from Safari, where it notes memory constraints. Check the current technical documentation for browser-specific details rather than interpreting “no limit” as unlimited capacity on every device.
What you need for a transfer
- A supported browser on each device and an internet connection that allows the browsers to establish a WebRTC connection, directly or through the available relay path.
- Enough local storage on the receiving device for the incoming files, along with browser support suitable for the files being transferred.
- The same room link, QR code, or code shared by the sender and recipient.
The product is presented as requiring neither an account nor an app installation. Its practical compatibility still depends on the browsers and operating systems in use; consult ButterShare’s product information for current support details.

What happens if a tab closes during a transfer?
A browser-based transfer depends on the participating browser sessions and their connection. The available product information does not establish that a transfer resumes after a tab is closed or that an interrupted transfer can be recovered. If a transfer is important, keep both sessions open until completion and confirm that the recipient has the complete files before ending the session.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When ButterShare is a good fit
ButterShare may suit a one-off transfer when both people can use compatible browsers, the recipient has sufficient local storage, and avoiding a cloud upload or account is useful. A cloud-based service may be more suitable when files need to remain available after the sender goes offline, when recipients cannot coordinate a live transfer, or when transfer continuity and recovery are essential. These are practical differences in workflow, not a claim that one approach is universally more private or reliable.

ButterShare’s pages describe its intended design, but no independently measured transfer speeds, maximum successful file sizes, or verified privacy outcomes are established here. Treat the no-cap statement as a product policy, not a performance guarantee.
