The WordPress remote-code-execution advisory identified in the available official sources concerns malicious PostScript uploads—not HEIC images. It applies when an Author-level or higher account can upload a malicious file to a site using Imagick and Ghostscript. WordPress’s separate HEIC workflow converts supported images to JPEG in the browser before upload; the sources do not connect that process to the PostScript flaw.
Can a HEIC image hack a WordPress site?
The official WordPress advisory published August 12, 2026, does not identify HEIC as the trigger. It describes remote code execution through a malicious PostScript file uploaded by a user with Author-level privileges or higher, on a server using Imagick and Ghostscript. The advisory attributes the weakness to Ghostscript’s handling of certain embedded files. Read the WordPress advisory.

That distinction matters: a reported WordPress upload vulnerability is not evidence that every image format, or HEIC in particular, can execute server code. The cited official sources do not establish an HEIC-specific WordPress RCE. That is not proof that such a vulnerability could never exist; it means this advisory does not verify the claim.

What the WordPress advisory actually covers
- File type: malicious PostScript, not HEIC.
- Account needed: Author-level access or higher.
- Server components: Imagick and Ghostscript.
- Underlying issue: Ghostscript handling of certain embedded files.
The stated conditions are useful for assessing exposure, but they are not a substitute for installing the relevant security update.
#1 Best Overall
- It allows converting single HEIC images or HEIC image collections.
- It's completely unlimited.
- Works without an internet connection.
How WordPress handles HEIC uploads
WordPress 7.1’s client-side media-processing announcement says supported browsers convert HEIC inputs to JPEG before upload and retain the original as a companion file. The developer handbook describes client-side processing as a way to support HEIC uploads when server-side HEIC support is unavailable. These documents explain an upload and conversion workflow; they do not associate HEIC with the PostScript/Imagick/Ghostscript vulnerability. See the WordPress 7.1 announcement and the Block Editor Handbook documentation.
Which WordPress versions fix the malicious-upload RCE?
WordPress released security fixes on August 12, 2026. Install the patched version for the branch your site runs; do not assume that a version number from a different branch is the right target. The advisory lists these patched releases:

What site owners should do
- Update WordPress. In the dashboard, open Dashboard → Updates and install the patched release that applies to your branch. The official release notice also provides the option to obtain the release from WordPress.org.
- Check the advisory’s conditions. Determine whether your site uses Imagick and Ghostscript and whether Author-level or higher accounts can upload files. These details help you understand whether the described conditions match your setup.
- Do not treat HEIC settings as the fix. Changing HEIC upload or conversion behavior alone does not apply the documented WordPress security patch.
