If you want both a Zippo case and a torch flame, Zippo’s Single Torch insert is one option—but check that it fits your case.
How the two lighter types differ
A classic Zippo windproof lighter and a butane torch lighter use different fuel and ignition systems. Zippo specifies lighter fluid for its standard insert; its Single Torch insert uses butane and push-button piezo ignition. Choose the classic Zippo for its standard windproof design
The standard insert is the straightforward choice if you specifically want Zippo’s classic windproof design and do not mind using lighter fluid. Zippo’s instructions cover filling and routine handling. The available information does not include a controlled head-to-head wind test, so it cannot establish how the standard insert compares with a torch in particular conditions.

Choose a butane torch if you prefer its flame and fuel system
A torch lighter suits someone who wants a blue torch flame and butane refills. The Single Torch insert is one way to get that style in a compatible Zippo case. Zippo lists its flame temperature and per-fill use figures, but those are manufacturer specifications—not a guarantee of everyday results.
Do not choose on reliability claims alone
No independent comparative dataset establishes which option lasts longer, works more reliably, or is better for daily carry. User anecdotes do not settle those questions either. Base the choice on the fuel, flame, form factor, and refill routine you actually want rather than assuming one type will outperform the other.

Check case compatibility before choosing a Zippo torch insert
Zippo’s Single Torch listing says the insert fits classic Zippo cases but excludes Slim, Armor, and 1935 Replica cases. Zippo’s support guidance also notes that some older torch inserts may not fit Armor cases. Check the exact insert’s current compatibility information against your case before purchase; “fits Zippo” is not enough to confirm fit across every model.
Refill and handle the lighter safely
For the standard insert
- Use lighter fluid specified for the standard Zippo windproof lighter. Zippo recommends its own lighter fuel in its refill guidance.
- Fill slowly and stop before the lighter is overfilled.
- Wipe the lighter and your hands dry after filling. If fuel is on the outside, do not put the lighter in a pocket or against skin.
Lighter fuel is flammable. Follow the complete Zippo refill instructions rather than relying on a quick fill alone.

Use the butane and refill procedure specified for the particular torch insert. Zippo recommends Zippo or Ronson butane for its torch guidance; follow the insert’s instructions, including any stated wait after refilling, before ignition.
