For most home networks, turn off Web Access from WAN or Remote Connection, disable Telnet and SSH if you do not use them, and set a strong router administrator password that is different from your Wi-Fi password. Keep firmware current and the firewall enabled. ASUS recommends leaving WAN administration disabled unless you need it.
Turn off administration from the internet
WAN administration allows someone to reach the router’s management interface from outside your home network. For ordinary home use, disable it. ASUS’s setting is commonly found at Administration > System > Remote Access Config; depending on the model and firmware, the control may be labeled “Web Access from WAN” or “Remote Connection.” ASUS notes that menu names and layouts can vary.

With this setting off, you can still administer the router from a device connected to your local network. Do not enable WAN access simply to make the router easier to manage while away from home.
Disable command-line services you do not use
Turn off Telnet and SSH unless you actively use them to administer the router. They provide command-level access rather than the usual graphical interface, so leaving unused services enabled creates access paths you do not need.

Secure the router administrator account
Use a strong, unique password for the router’s administrator login. Do not reuse the Wi-Fi password: the credentials serve different purposes, and knowing the wireless password should not also grant access to router settings. Keep the administrator password somewhere you can retrieve it when you need to change settings.
Keep the router’s basic defenses maintained
- Update firmware: Install current firmware for your router model so it receives the fixes ASUS provides.
- Leave the firewall enabled: It is a basic network defense and is not a substitute for disabling unneeded remote administration.
- Consider UPnP and DMZ carefully: ASUS recommends considering disabling UPnP if doing so does not cause problems, and warns that DMZ can increase exposure. These are supporting exposure controls, not replacements for turning off WAN management.
If you genuinely need remote administration
Keeping remote administration enabled exposes the management interface to internet-originating access attempts. If a real requirement means you retain it, use the available safeguards, and confirm that you can keep the router and its access credentials maintained.

| Choice | Exposure and safeguards | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Remote administration off | The router management interface is not available through WAN administration. Local management remains available. | Recommended default for most home users. |
| Remote administration retained | The management interface is reachable from the internet. Where supported, use HTTPS and restrict access to specified IP addresses. | Only when remote access is genuinely needed and you can maintain the configuration. |
ASUS documents HTTPS for WebGUI access under Advanced Settings > Administration > System > Local Access Config, and a specified-IP option under Advanced Settings > Administration > System > Specified IP Address. These paths and options may differ or be unavailable on a particular model or firmware. A specified-IP restriction is useful only if the address you connect from is known and usable for that purpose.

HTTPS protects the connection to the WebGUI; it does not make exposing router administration on WAN equivalent to keeping it off. ASUS notes that the router certificate is self-signed, so a browser may show a certificate warning when connecting to the router.

Use AiProtection if your router and mode support it
If available, enable AiProtection and use Router Security Assessment to review settings. ASUS describes AiProtection as an additional network-protection feature, but availability depends on the model and operating mode. It is not supported in AP mode, and some dual-WAN modes conflict with it. AiProtection does not remove the need to disable WAN administration when you do not need remote access.
