Burns & McDonnell, KC STEM Alliance and the Kansas City Chiefs have announced a five-year, $625,000 commitment to Team Up for Math, a Kansas City-area initiative designed to build third graders’ math fluency and confidence. Center School District is the first district named for the program’s launch in the 2026–27 school year.
What is Team Up for Math?
Team Up for Math is a hands-on numeracy initiative for third-grade students. Its activities use board games, card games and other interactive exercises to give students practice with calculating, estimating and strategic decision-making. The partners say the approach is intended to support number sense, logical reasoning, teamwork and confidence; those are program goals, not reported or independently measured outcomes.

Why is the program being launched?
The announcement frames the initiative against fourth-grade math proficiency figures from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). It reports that 39% of U.S. fourth graders, 36% of Missouri fourth graders and 40% of Kansas fourth graders scored at or above NAEP Proficient in mathematics. These percentages are figures quoted by Burns & McDonnell; the underlying NAEP tables were not independently reviewed for this article. The release also says national average fourth-grade math performance remained below pre-pandemic levels, without giving a comparison figure.
