Buying Physical Media Is a Small Act of Rebellion

Buying a film on disc is a modest way to keep it available to yourself, even when it disappears from a subscription catalog. That can feel like a refusal to let streaming services decide what remains easy to watch—but it is not evidence that discs are replacing streaming. U.S. spending on DVDs, Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs still fell in 2025; only the 4K UHD segment grew.

What makes buying a disc feel like rebellion?

The appeal is control over access. A film included in a streaming subscription can leave that service’s catalog; a physical copy does not depend on the title remaining listed there. Lauren VanDerwerken, 31, put the distinction plainly in the Los Angeles Times: “If something gets deleted off an online platform, I will still be able to watch it because I have a physical copy.”

That is a personal account, not a guarantee that every disc will last forever or a finding about how most young viewers behave. Discs can be lost or damaged, and watching one requires a compatible player. But keeping a copy can reduce reliance on a service’s changing selection. Bianca Garcia, 27, described the frustration behind that choice to the Times: “At this point, I’m forced to have six different subscriptions, which is insane, and I still can’t find what I want to watch,”

So “rebellion” is best understood as a reader’s interpretation of ownership and choice: opting to keep a film rather than depend entirely on a rotating subscription catalog. It does not mean that streaming has vanished or that buying is always better.

What the latest numbers say about physical media

U.S. consumer spending on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD formats declined about 9% in 2025, according to the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG), as reported by the Los Angeles Times. That followed declines of more than 20% in both 2023 and 2024. DEG’s year-end report, released February 11, 2026, describes the 2025 drop as less than 10%; both sources indicate the decline slowed, not that the overall disc market returned to growth. These figures concern U.S. consumer spending, not worldwide sales or the number of discs shipped.

The exception was 4K UHD: DEG reported that spending on the format rose 12% in 2025 compared with 2024. That gain came within a smaller category and did not reverse the decline across physical formats. DEG president Amy Jo Smith told the Times: “This is most clear in 4K UHD Blu-ray, which delivers a premium in-home viewing experience,”

Why people buy or rent films on disc

Keeping access to a particular film

For a viewer who has lost track of which service carries a film—or cannot find it among current subscriptions—a disc offers a way to keep that title on hand. The Times’ interviews capture this frustration in customers’ own words, including: “Why am I paying this much for them to give me a movie for a year and take it away?” These are reported perspectives, not results from a representative survey, so they cannot establish how common the motivation is.

Enjoying ownership and the edition itself

Some viewers value having a tangible copy or choosing a particular release. Edition contents vary: check the listing for the format, included features and other details rather than assuming every edition of a film is the same. Criterion president Peter Becker told the Times of young viewers’ interest in physical media: “In the dawn of streaming, it seemed like maybe this was not going to happen, but it has definitely happened,” His comment is an observation, not a measurement of how many young people collect discs.

Renting instead of buying

Physical media is not only about building a collection. Los Angeles rental shop Vidiots said it averaged 170 rentals daily in its busiest month, January 2026, and rented 500 titles in one day, according to the Times. Those are figures reported by one shop, not a national benchmark. Vidiots director Robbie McCluskey called the moment a “golden age”; the phrase describes his view of activity at the shop, not a market-wide trend.

Choosing between DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD

Start with the equipment you have and the specific release you want. A disc only works as intended when your player supports its format; check compatibility before buying. The edition matters too, since contents and included features can differ between releases.

Choice What to check Access model
DVD Confirm that your player supports DVD and inspect the specific edition’s details. Buy a copy to keep or rent a DVD, depending on availability.
Blu-ray Confirm that your player supports Blu-ray and check the release’s contents. Buy a copy to keep or rent a Blu-ray, depending on availability.
4K UHD Blu-ray Confirm that your player supports 4K UHD Blu-ray; check the specific edition before purchase. Buy a copy to keep or rent a 4K UHD Blu-ray, depending on availability.

The choice is practical as well as personal. A physical copy avoids dependence on a subscription listing, but it takes storage space, needs a working compatible player and can be damaged or misplaced. Renting can suit a one-time watch; buying makes more sense when you want to keep a title. Neither option guarantees that every film is available in every format or edition.

Where physical media fits alongside streaming

For many viewers, the decision need not be all or nothing. Streaming offers access through a subscription; a disc can keep a chosen film available independently of a title’s place in that catalog. The reported market figures show a shrinking overall U.S. physical-media category in 2025, alongside growth in 4K UHD spending—not a broad shift away from streaming. Treat the disc as a deliberate way to keep particular films, not proof that one access model has won.
