Anduril plans to build Arsenal-2 at Sparrows Point in Baltimore County, Maryland. The White House described the announcement as a new American shipyard push, but the facility’s stated role is component manufacturing for the Virginia-class submarine supply chain. The company plans to invest $3.7 billion in private capital. What will the new facility make?
Components and assemblies, not whole submarines
Initial work is expected to include components such as torpedo tubes. The longer-term goal is to make larger modules and hull sections. Those parts are intended for delivery to the traditional Virginia-class builders, General Dynamics Electric Boat and HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding, which work together on the program and handle final submarine assembly. An industry official quoted by USNI drew a clear boundary around the project: “Anduril is not going to be producing entire submarines. That’s not our role.” The official described the aim instead as becoming a critical, potentially larger supplier to the lead shipbuilders. USNI News

When is production expected to begin?
USNI News reports production readiness at Sparrows Point is expected in 2030. DefenseScoop likewise describes initial operations as expected in 2030, followed by a progressive ramp-up. How is this different from a fifth public Navy yard?
Arsenal-2 is a planned private component-manufacturing facility intended to support the Virginia-class supply chain. It is separate from a White House memorandum directing planning for a fifth public Navy yard.
