Bulk URL Screenshots with HTMLCSStoImage: API Workflow and Limits

Use HTML/CSS to Image’s batch endpoint to capture multiple URLs or page variations in one request. Here is the request structure, account-dependent capacity, credit limits, and how to diagnose 429 responses.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture multiple URLs or versions of a page with HTML/CSS to Image, send a POST request to https://hcti.io/v1/image/batch. Put shared settings in default_options and per-image settings in variations. Authenticate with HTTP Basic using your API ID as the username and API key as the password. The batch capacity depends on your plan, and image credits still apply even though image creation has no documented per-second or per-minute request cap.

How the HTML/CSS to Image batch API works

The batch endpoint creates multiple images in one API request. You can submit URL captures or HTML/CSS renders. For a group of screenshots from the same page, set the page URL and common options once in default_options, then provide individual variations such as viewport dimensions or color scheme.

Use a fully qualified, publicly accessible page URL in the url field. The URL takes precedence over html; provide one or the other, not both. CSS is optional and can be injected into a URL render. The API returns image IDs and URLs associated with the requested variations.

Authenticate and prepare a request

Use HTTP Basic authentication: the API ID is the username and the API key is the password. The create operation requires the images:create permission. Keep credentials on a server you control, treat the key like a password, and restrict it to the permissions the workflow needs; do not embed it in browser-side JavaScript.

The API accepts JSON or form data. The following example uses JSON and captures the same URL in two viewport widths. Replace the credentials with your own, and make sure the batch size is within your account’s plan limit.

curl -X POST "https://hcti.io/v1/image/batch"
  -u "YOUR_API_ID:YOUR_API_KEY"
  -H "Content-Type: application/json"
  -d '{
    "default_options": {
      "url": "https://example.com"
    },
    "variations": [
      { "viewport_width": 1280, "viewport_height": 800 },
      { "viewport_width": 390, "viewport_height": 844 }
    ]
  }'

For a basic single-image request rather than a batch, use POST https://hcti.io/v1/image with the same authentication. Supply either url or html; a successful response includes an image URL and ID.

Choose shared settings and per-image variations

Shared defaults

Put values common to the batch in default_options, especially the URL, injected CSS, and any rendering settings that apply to every image. Use a fully qualified public URL. A URL overrides HTML if both are supplied, so avoid sending both.

Variation overrides

Each item in variations describes a render. It can override relevant defaults, allowing a single page to be captured at different viewport sizes, color schemes, or full-page settings. For viewport control, set both width and height; the parameter reference requires both dimensions when using either.

Dynamic pages

For content that appears after initial page load, the parameter reference documents max_wait_ms as a maximum wait from 500 to 10,000 milliseconds before capture. It also documents render_when_ready for render readiness. Check the current parameter reference for supported values and constraints before relying on less common options.

Batch capacity, credits, and rate limits

The HTML/CSS to Image pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists batch capacity of up to 25 or up to 100 images in one request depending on plan. These are published plan limits, not a promise that every account has the larger capacity; confirm your entitlement in the live pricing page and account dashboard before building a job around it.

The service’s rate-limit documentation says image creation has no per-second or per-minute request limit. That does not mean unlimited rendering: each render consumes image credits and remains subject to plan restrictions. The same documentation lists separate management-operation limits of 100 reads and 20 writes per minute, per covered resource family and organization, in a sliding 60-second window. REST and MCP management calls share those allowances. These limits apply to management operations, not image rendering.

Identical requests may reuse an existing result when deduplication is enabled and the request qualifies under the account’s settings. Batch requests do not support dedupe_duration_s; do not assume deduplication will reduce usage unless it is available and enabled for your account.

Handle errors and retry safely

  • 401 Unauthorized: check that the API ID and API key are present and valid.
  • 403 Forbidden: verify that the key has the required images:create permission.
  • 429 Too Many Requests on a management operation: respect the Retry-After response header. If it is absent, the rate-limit guide advises waiting 60 seconds and then spacing retries.
  • 429 caused by exhausted image credits: waiting does not restore credits. Check the billing period, dashboard, and overage settings, or use a plan with more allowance.
  • Batch rejected for size: reduce the number of variations to fit the account’s capacity, or confirm whether the plan supports the needed batch size.
  • Unexpected or missing page content: confirm that the URL is public and that the page does not require an interactive login or browser state unavailable to the renderer. For delayed content, review the documented readiness and wait options.

Do not retry every failure blindly. Identify whether the response indicates credentials, permissions, a management throttle, insufficient credits, or a batch-plan constraint, then apply the matching fix.

Plan for a production batch workflow

  • Chunk requests by account capacity. Build batches no larger than the limit confirmed for the account, rather than assuming the maximum listed for another tier.
  • Budget credits separately from request rate. No documented render-rate cap does not remove credit and plan limits. Track usage and decide how the job should respond when credits are depleted.
  • Separate rendering from management calls. Image creation and management endpoints have different limits; poll or administer resources with the management quotas in mind.
  • Preserve response-to-input mapping. Store the input variation order alongside returned IDs and URLs so downstream jobs can associate each result with its requested settings.
  • Make retries cause-aware. Retry transient management throttles after the prescribed wait; do not loop on authentication, permission, or exhausted-credit errors.
  • Check account-specific behavior. Batch capacity, deduplication, overages, storage destinations, and proxy options vary by plan and should be verified in the current pricing information and dashboard.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API for a URL. It accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those cleanup steps can each be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

For a WebP capture, the cURL request is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one HTML/CSS to Image batch contain different URLs?

The documented batch pattern supports shared defaults and per-image variations, but confirm the current endpoint reference for whether the URL itself can be overridden in each variation for your account and request format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the batch endpoint accept templates?

Yes. The templated batch endpoint is POST https://hcti.io/v1/image/batch/templated; each variation must resolve to a template owned by the organization and provide values for its required variables.

Does HTML/CSS to Image offer unlimited image creation because there is no render rate cap?

No. The absence of a documented per-second or per-minute creation cap is separate from image-credit allowances and plan restrictions.
