Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Memplua is an early-stage, local-first project that listens to audio you choose, transcribes the speech, extracts structured ideas with a local language model, and holds them for your review before anything reaches Obsidian. It aims at a familiar annoyance: pausing a lecture, podcast, meeting or video to type out the useful parts. The project’s repository labels it Alpha v2, so treat it as something to study and experiment with, not a finished tool.
What problem Memplua targets
Useful information keeps passing through your computer as sound, and capturing it by hand breaks your attention and costs effort. In his DEV article on building the project, the author, Ivan, puts the idea this way: “information already passes through your computer, so instead of asking the user to upload every source manually, the application should capture that stream, process it locally, and prepare structured notes for review.”

This makes Memplua a generic capture-and-interpretation pipeline. It does not rely on source-specific connectors for YouTube, a podcast app or a meeting tool. It takes whatever audio the operating system is playing, or the microphone is hearing, and works from that.
How the pipeline works
The article describes this sequence:
- System audio capture. The user chooses microphone or computer audio. Capture is operating-system specific, and development began on Windows because that is the author’s own platform.
- Voice activity detection. Speech segments are separated from silence and non-speech.
- Transcription. The author reports using Whisper for speech-to-text.
- Text chunking. The transcript is split into pieces a small model can handle (see the next section).
- Local LLM. Inference runs through llama.cpp. The author names Qwen3-4B-Q4 as one model being tested.
- Structured notes. The model produces terms with explanations, ideas and conclusions, links among concepts, tags, and references back to the original material, according to the repository.
- Manual review. The user approves or rejects the material.
- Obsidian export. Approved knowledge is written to the vault.
Whisper, llama.cpp and Qwen3-4B-Q4 are the author’s reported choices and experiments. They are not stated as mandatory dependencies, and the article offers no independent validation of them as recommendations.

The chunking problem: focus versus context
Small local models need short inputs, but cutting a transcript into hard segments loses meaning at the edges, because a sentence’s sense often depends on what came just before. The obvious fix is an overlapping, floating window. The author reports that it introduced a new problem: the same text appeared in several consecutive inputs, and the model generated duplicate notes for it.
The revised design splits each input into two parts:

- The new generation of the songwriter's interface: Plug in your mic and guitar and let Scarlett Solo 4th Gen bring big studio sound to wherever you make music
- Studio-quality sound: With a huge 120dB dynamic range, the newest generation of Scarlett uses the same converters as Focusrite’s flagship interfaces, found in the world's biggest studios
- Find your signature sound: Scarlett 4th Gen's improved Air mode lifts vocals and guitars to the front of the mix, adding musical presence and rich harmonic drive to your recordings
- All you need to record, mix and master your music: Includes industry-leading recording software and a full collection of record-making plugins
- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Focus, the section where new information may be extracted.
- Context, earlier material that helps the model interpret the focus but should not produce repeated entities.
This is the author’s reported approach to preserving context while limiting repeated extraction. The article does not present it as a benchmarked result, so do not read it as proof of a specific accuracy or duplicate-rate improvement.

Privacy and the review step
The Memplua repository states that speech recognition and language processing run locally on your computer and that your material stays under your control. It also says the application asks for approval before changing saved knowledge. Both are project claims. The sources describe the architecture but do not audit every dependency or the app’s network behavior, so they do not support a guarantee that every configuration is offline or incapable of sending data elsewhere. If that matters for sensitive recordings such as meetings, check the code and your own network activity yourself.
Rank #3
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
The review step also does practical work. Small quantized models can misread or invent details, and a human checkpoint keeps those mistakes out of your vault.
Current state and what to expect
The author reports that Windows system-audio capture, transcription, local inference, structured note generation, manual review and Obsidian export work at the time of writing. The repository describes the project in its own words: “Alpha v2 — memplua is actively evolving and is not yet intended for everyday production use.” It says the project is still being refined for stability and everyday usability.

Comparing Memplua with other audio-to-note tools
If you are weighing it against alternatives, these are the axes that matter:
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Input | System audio, microphone, or uploaded files? Memplua covers the first two. |
| OS coverage | Which systems can capture audio, and with what limits? Memplua started on Windows. |
| Where processing runs | Do transcription and inference happen locally or in the cloud? Memplua claims local. |
| Chunking | How does the tool handle context and prevent duplicates? Memplua uses focus/context. |
| Review | Do you approve drafts before they are saved? Memplua does. |
| Export | What format, and how deep is the Obsidian integration? |
| Maturity | Setup burden and model configuration. Memplua is Alpha v2. |
Who should try it
Memplua suits developers and Obsidian users who are comfortable with alpha software, run Windows, and want to see how a local capture-transcribe-extract-review loop can be built. Anyone who needs a dependable daily tool or cross-platform support should treat it as a project to follow, not one to rely on yet.
