No VPN app can be installed on a Google Nest Wifi, Google Wifi or Nest Wifi Pro, so the “best VPN for Nest” depends on how you route traffic, not only on which provider you pick. Windscribe’s support guide (Shaun C., August 11, 2026) says: “Google Nest Wifi (all generations), Google Wifi, and Nest Wifi Pro run Google’s proprietary firmware and do not support running a VPN client directly on the device.” You have two practical routes: put a VPN-capable router upstream of the Nest mesh, or install a VPN app on each device. This guide covers both, what to check before buying anything, and why we don’t name a single “best” provider or router.
Can I use a VPN with Google Nest Wifi?
Yes, but indirectly. The Nest hardware cannot be the VPN client. Windscribe describes the two workable approaches as an upstream VPN router or per-device apps. A VPN app on your phone protects that phone only. It does not cover the TV, game console or smart speaker on the same Nest network.

| Approach | Coverage | Main cost | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN-client router upstream of Nest | Most regular traffic from every device on the Nest network | An extra router | Slower speeds, fail-closed gaps, IPv6 leaks, double NAT |
| VPN app on each device | Only devices where the app is installed (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android) | Setup per device | Consoles, smart TVs and IoT gear are usually left out |
| Browser extension | Browser traffic only (Chrome, Firefox, Edge for Windscribe) | Minimal | Other apps on the device are unprotected |
Option A: Put a VPN router in front of the Nest mesh
The wiring
The topology Windscribe documents is: modem, then VPN-capable router, then the Nest primary node, then your devices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Connect the modem’s LAN port to the WAN port of the VPN router.
- Connect a LAN port on the VPN router to the WAN port of the Nest primary node.
- Configure the VPN client on the upstream router. For Windscribe’s manual route, the router needs OpenVPN or WireGuard client support.
- Leave the Nest mesh in router mode. Windscribe warns that bridge mode on the primary point of a multi-node system disables mesh functionality and removes Google Nest features. Bridge mode may be possible with a single Wifi device only.
Once the tunnel is up, most regular traffic from devices on the Nest network exits through the VPN router.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
Double NAT
If your ISP gateway also does NAT, you now have extra layers. Windscribe advises bridging the ISP device, not the Nest mesh, to remove one. Games, VoIP and port forwarding are the usual casualties. Local port forwarding may need rules on both routers, and inbound traffic through the tunnel also needs forwarding on the provider’s side. Google’s help page on port forwarding explains the Nest side.
Where a router-level VPN falls short
- Speed: Windscribe warns some consumer router CPUs cannot sustain fast encrypted speeds. Your plain Wi-Fi speed is not your VPN speed.
- No kill switch by default: Windscribe says its manual router configs lack the app’s Firewall/automatic kill switch. Without blocking rules, traffic can fall back to the regular WAN connection if the tunnel drops.
- IPv6: IPv6 traffic can bypass an IPv4-only tunnel and reveal your ISP address unless it is routed through the VPN or disabled on the VPN router.
- No split tunneling in the manual setup, per Windscribe, unless your router offers its own per-device routing.
Test after setup
Check your public IP, DNS resolver and IPv6 address from a device behind the Nest mesh. Then disconnect the tunnel on the router and see whether traffic stops or leaks through your normal connection.

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Which VPN router works with Google Nest?
We can’t name one model. Compatibility is model- and firmware-specific, and we found no independent, comparable throughput or reliability tests for VPN routers behind Nest. Here is what the manufacturers document:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- TP-Link: its guides (May 2026 overview, April 2026 UK client guide) say not all routers support the VPN Client feature. Protocols include OpenVPN, PPTP and L2TP/IPSec, with WireGuard on select models only. On supported models you can choose which devices use the VPN while others keep the normal connection.
- GL.iNet: its documentation states its routers come with OpenVPN and WireGuard clients pre-installed.

- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
- It can act as a VPN client. A VPN server function, which lets you dial into your home network, is a different feature.
- It supports the protocol and config format your provider publishes. No subscription works on every router.
- It can block ordinary WAN traffic if the tunnel fails.
- It handles IPv6 and DNS through the tunnel, or lets you disable IPv6.
- It offers per-device routing if only some devices need the VPN.
- Its CPU can sustain the encrypted speed you need.
Option B: VPN apps on individual devices
This leaves your network untouched, so the mesh, port forwarding and Google Home behave normally. The cost is coverage. Windscribe lists apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android. Anything that cannot run an app, such as many TVs and consoles, stays outside the tunnel. Browser extensions cover browser traffic only.
What about extenders, travel routers and bridges?
Google says Nest Wifi and Google Wifi work with most universal extenders, repeaters, travel routers and devices supporting client mode, AP client mode or ProxySTA, depending on how the device extends the network. Google also warns of problems: wrong or missing entries in the Google Home device list, brief interruptions while roaming, and issues with DNS, port forwarding, IPv6, QoS, WPA3 or DHCP reservations. That shows such devices can coexist with Nest. It does not show that any given extender can run a VPN client, so confirm VPN client support separately.

Choosing the VPN provider
For router use, pick a provider that publishes manual OpenVPN or WireGuard configurations for your router and documents how its router setups handle DNS, IPv6 and tunnel failure. Windscribe is one example: it has a current Nest-specific guide, device apps, and manual router configs for paid plans. We haven’t benchmarked providers, so we don’t rank them. For app-only use on phones and laptops, any reputable provider with native apps for your devices will do, and Nest compatibility isn’t a deciding factor.
The Bottom Line
For whole-home coverage, buy a router that supports OpenVPN or WireGuard client mode, place it between the modem and your Nest primary node, keep Nest in router mode, and test for leaks and tunnel failure. For a few devices, use native apps instead. Choose hardware on documented client support, not marketing.
