In my account of creating Explita Tunnel (eta), the harder work was making WebSockets and Server-Sent Events behave reliably while traffic passed through a relay. The project describes an ephemeral key exchange and encrypted frames, but it also has an important security gap: the client does not yet cryptographically authenticate the gateway.
What Explita Tunnel is designed to do
Explita Tunnel is an early-release command-line reverse tunnel for development ingress, including local webhook testing and hot-module-reload (HMR) traffic. A local service connects outward to a gateway so that incoming requests can reach it without exposing the development machine directly. The project account describes an in-memory request replay buffer, a local inspector, and IP/CIDR allowlisting. Those are the author’s descriptions of the implementation, not independently verified capabilities.

The central design question is how to make the gateway useful without treating it as trusted with the traffic contents. The author’s account describes an ephemeral P-256 elliptic-curve Diffie–Hellman (ECDH) exchange, HKDF-SHA256 key derivation, and AES-256-GCM encryption for relayed frames. In broad terms, ECDH lets two parties derive shared key material; HKDF derives a key from that material; and GCM provides authenticated encryption for data and detects tampering when its authentication tag is checked.
Node.js documents the cryptographic primitives and APIs involved, including GCM authentication-tag handling, but that documentation does not audit Explita Tunnel’s protocol, key handling, or deployment: Node.js crypto documentation.

Encryption does not prove the gateway’s identity
The project account acknowledges that ephemeral ECDH by itself does not authenticate the server. Encryption can keep payload contents confidential from a relay that does not possess the session key, but without a verified server identity the client has no cryptographic proof that it negotiated with the intended gateway. A connection could be encrypted and still be established with an impostor.
The author says server identity signing is planned for a future release. Until that is implemented and independently assessed, the described design should not be read as providing authenticated gateway identity. This distinction matters whenever a tunnel carries secrets, credentials, or requests whose contents must be delivered only to a specific operator.

Why real-time traffic exposed the harder bugs
WebSocket handler context and HMR disconnects
The author reports that a Fastify WebSocket route handler lost its class context: the framework invoked it with a different this binding than the router expected. A property lookup then failed and the socket closed abnormally. The reported fix was to use an arrow property, which preserves the surrounding class context. In a development workflow, this kind of failure can look like repeated HMR disconnects rather than an obvious cryptographic problem.
WebSocket reliability also depends on ordinary protocol details: close codes need to be handled sensibly, and ping/pong heartbeats should not be mistaken for application payloads by a wire inspector. The author calls out both as implementation concerns.

Compression buffering and delayed SSE messages
Server-Sent Events (SSE) rely on messages being delivered as they are produced. The author says Brotli/Gzip compression middleware buffered small text chunks, causing an apparent hang. Excluding the text/event-stream content type from compression resolved the observed issue in that implementation.
The broader lesson is specific to streaming: a tunnel may preserve encrypted bytes correctly and still fail the user’s expectation of prompt delivery if a middleware layer buffers them. The author also notes the need to avoid relay-side stream buffering and to preserve chunk boundaries across binary and UTF-8 streams.

Terminal responsiveness and inspection
For command-line use, terminal raw-mode handling needs to remain responsive while data is relayed. The inspector also needs to distinguish useful traffic from control traffic, such as ping/pong heartbeats. These concerns sit outside the choice of cipher, but they shape whether a tunnel feels dependable during interactive development.

The account describes request replay as local and memory-only, with stated buffer limits. That can be useful when inspecting or re-sending a recent development request, but the claim should not be mistaken for durable logging or a guarantee that every request is retained. The article does not establish an independent audit of those limits or the handling of sensitive payloads.

A local inspector can help diagnose what crossed the tunnel, while IP/CIDR allowlisting offers a way to constrain access. These are potentially useful controls, but neither substitutes for server authentication, and their actual protection depends on implementation and configuration.
How to choose among a reverse tunnel, public ingress, and private networking
The original project account compares setup friction, relay trust, and intended use. It characterizes ngrok as convenient for prototyping, Cloudflare Tunnel as a fit for persistent services on custom domains, and Tailscale Funnel as suited to teams already using a Tailnet. It positions Explita Tunnel for temporary developer ingress and local testing. These are the author’s broad use-case characterizations, not a current independent audit of each service’s features, security model, or pricing.
| Option | Use case in the author’s characterization | What to check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| ngrok | Low-friction prototyping | Current setup, access controls, relay trust model, and plan details |
| Cloudflare Tunnel | Persistent services on custom domains | Current domain and ingress requirements, controls, and service terms |
| Tailscale Funnel | Teams already using a Tailnet | Current availability and how public exposure fits the team’s network policy |
Explita Tunnel (eta) |
Temporary developer ingress and local testing | Early-release status, gateway authentication, and the implementation claims described above |
Before putting real credentials or private data through any tunnel, verify the current product behavior and the trust boundary that applies to your deployment. For Explita Tunnel in particular, the described encryption should not be conflated with authenticated gateway identity.

Quick Recap
What this build story demonstrates
- Cryptographic primitives can protect relayed payloads, but they do not automatically establish who controls the gateway.
- Streaming behavior depends on the whole request path: WebSocket handler binding, close handling, middleware buffering, and relay behavior all affect what developers experience.
- Useful tunnel comparisons start with the job—temporary local testing, persistent public ingress, or private team networking—and then examine friction and trust.
