Building an AI Vision Assistant with Electron: A Practical Guide

A practical guide to building an Electron desktop vision assistant, from image selection and API input choices to model detail, version compatibility, and packaging.

To build a desktop AI vision assistant with Electron, connect a user-facing image-selection flow to a vision API: collect an image, validate and prepare it, send it with the user’s question, then display the response. The key choices are which model and API to use, how images enter the app, which operating systems to support, and whether any image data is retained. The guide below outlines the implementation decisions without assuming a particular stack or claiming a finished, tested application.

How to build an AI vision assistant with Electron

Think of the app as four parts: an Electron interface, a controlled path for selecting or providing an image, a request to a vision-capable API, and a results view. Keep the model/API choice and operating-system targets explicit in the project plan; the title alone does not determine them.

  1. Choose the vision API and model. Confirm that the selected model accepts image inputs and supports the image-detail controls your tasks need. Check its current input limits and pricing before setting product constraints. OpenAI documents image input by fully qualified URL, Base64 data URL, or uploaded file in its Images and vision guide.
  2. Choose how images reach the app. A user-selected local image, an already-hosted image URL, and an encoded image have different validation and data-handling needs. Do not treat these paths as interchangeable from a privacy or implementation standpoint.
  3. Build the interaction. Let the user select or provide an image, enter a question, submit both to the chosen API, and read the response in the interface. Show useful states for cancellation, invalid input, request failure, and a successful answer.
  4. Decide data handling deliberately. Define whether images are transmitted to a remote service, whether local copies are created, and whether prompts or responses are retained. These are product and privacy decisions, not properties guaranteed by Electron’s file picker.
  5. Package for the intended platforms. Configure and build a distributable for each operating system you support, then verify the relevant runtime and packaging-tool requirements for the versions you select.

How can users add an image?

The OpenAI guide lists PNG, JPEG, WEBP, and non-animated GIF as supported image formats, and describes URL, Base64 data URL, and uploaded-file input. It also documents multiple-image input and model-specific limits; check the current guide for the exact model before deciding which files, sizes, or image counts your app will accept.

Let the user select a local file

Electron’s dialog.showOpenDialog opens a native file picker. You can provide file filters, such as image extensions, and handle the returned selected paths or cancellation state. The dialog is only the selection step: your app still needs to read and validate the file, decide whether to resize or otherwise prepare it, and transmit it in the format required by the API. See Electron’s dialog documentation for the API and options.

Use a URL or encoded image

A URL can be convenient when the image is already hosted and accessible to the API. A Base64 data URL can carry image data directly in a request, but requires the app to obtain and encode that data. For either approach, confirm that the API accepts the chosen input for the selected model and consider what image data leaves the device.

Do not assume a webcam is required

The documented input options include URLs, encoded images, and uploaded files. A camera-capture feature is optional product scope, not a requirement for a desktop vision assistant.

How should image detail balance quality and usage?

Image inputs count as billable input tokens. The OpenAI guide describes low, high, original, and auto detail values where supported; it recommends original for tasks that need fine visual detail or precise OCR when that option is available. Higher detail is not a universal guarantee of a particular result or fixed cost: sizing, patch limits, support, and usage depend on the model. Check the current model-specific image guidance and pricing before estimating costs or exposing a detail selector.

Which Electron version should you target?

Use documentation that matches the Electron version in your app. Electron warns that development-branch documentation can describe APIs that are not compatible with a released version. Its official documentation index explains the version distinction. Record the Electron version used by the project and check any API example against that version rather than mixing snippets from different releases.

How do you package an Electron vision app?

Packaging is a separate step from implementing the interface and API request. electron-builder’s documentation describes distributable formats, platform targets, and configuration. Its v27 documentation lists Node.js >=22.12.0 as a prerequisite for that version; verify the current requirements for the version you choose, since tool and runtime requirements can change.
