Can You Get a GitHub Actions Secret Back Without Printing It?

GitHub does not reveal saved Actions secrets. Recover or rotate the credential with its issuer, replace it at the right scope, and verify the workflow without printing the value.

No: GitHub does not let you reveal a saved Actions secret in plaintext. If you have lost the value, recover or regenerate it with the service that issued the credential, then update the GitHub secret. Do not print it in a workflow log to try to retrieve it: GitHub warns that log redaction is not guaranteed.

Can you view a GitHub Actions secret after saving it?

No. GitHub encrypts secrets before they reach GitHub and injects them into a workflow at runtime when the workflow uses them. The documented secrets API provides secret metadata; it does not return the saved plaintext value. Updating a secret requires supplying a new value encrypted for GitHub. GitHub’s Actions secrets documentation and secrets REST API reference describe this model.

That means GitHub cannot recover a lost value for you. Check the credential provider’s settings or documentation to see whether it can reveal or regenerate the credential. If it cannot show the original, revoke or rotate it with that provider, then save the replacement in GitHub.

Why you should not print a secret to recover it

GitHub automatically redacts secrets in logs, but this is not a guarantee. Transformations such as encoding or other changes can prevent a value from matching the configured secret, leaving sensitive output exposed. GitHub explicitly warns that redaction is not guaranteed in its Secrets documentation. Treat masking as a protective measure, not as a way to display or recover a credential.

Replace the secret safely

  1. Identify the credential and its issuer. Determine which service created the secret, then check that service’s credential settings for reveal, regenerate, revoke, or rotate options. The right procedure depends on the provider.
  2. Check where GitHub stores the secret. It may be defined at the organization, repository, or environment level. If the same name exists at multiple levels, the more specific, lower-level secret takes precedence. An environment secret is available when a job that references that environment starts. See GitHub’s secrets guidance.
  3. Recover or rotate the value at the issuer. If the provider can supply a valid value, use it. If it cannot reveal the old value, rotate or revoke the credential there and create a replacement.
  4. Update the secret at the intended GitHub scope. Replace the saved value in the relevant organization, repository, or environment settings. The REST API can create or update a secret using a newly encrypted value, but it cannot retrieve the previous one. See the REST API reference.
  5. Use the secret without displaying it. Map it to the action’s required input or to an environment variable, following the action’s documentation. Check the workflow’s success or failure behavior without printing the credential. GitHub explains secret use and passing values in its Actions secrets guide.

If a workflow seems to use the wrong value

Check for same-named secrets at organization, repository, and environment scope. A lower-level secret takes precedence over one defined higher up, so the workflow may be receiving a different value than you expect. Also confirm that the job references the environment whose secret you updated; environment secrets are read when a job referencing that environment starts. Avoid debugging by echoing the value. Instead, use a non-disclosing check, such as whether the dependent action succeeds.

If the secret may have appeared in a log

Do not assume automatic masking made an exposed credential safe. Rotate or revoke it at the issuing service, replace the GitHub secret with the new value, and review access to any affected logs. Redaction may fail for transformed values, so printing the credential is not a safe recovery method.
