An adaptive chess trainer needs to coordinate puzzle rules, board state, player performance, and engine analysis without letting background work make the interface unpredictable. Dimos Michailidis’s ChessKinetics project is a concrete example: it groups puzzles into short waves, manages moves through Tyrian’s Model-View-Update (MVU) loop, and runs Stockfish in a browser Web Worker. The design is an implementation case study, not evidence that its schedule improves chess performance.
Start with the training loop: make its rules explicit
Michailidis describes a trainer that adapts puzzle practice around the player’s rating and recent failures. The product rules are specific: choose a target difficulty bucket from the player’s rating, present puzzles in waves of six, offer a two-minute recovery period of very simple patterns after an early failure, and skip the remaining harder puzzles after two failures in one wave. The project article explains these as design decisions; it does not report an evaluation of their effect on learning.

For a new implementation, represent the session as domain state and transitions rather than scattering conditions across board callbacks. A session might contain the player’s rating or target bucket, the current wave, the puzzle index, the failure count, and whether the trainer is in recovery. Then make each user action produce a clear next state:
- Select a wave: choose puzzles appropriate to the target bucket and initialize the wave’s progress and failure count.
- Score an attempt: compare the submitted move with the puzzle’s expected solution, then record the result and advance or retain the relevant puzzle state.
- Enter recovery: when the project’s early-failure condition applies, switch to simple recovery patterns and start the two-minute interval.
- End or continue the wave: after a second failure in the wave, stop presenting its remaining harder puzzles; otherwise continue according to the session rules.
Keep the threshold and recovery behavior in one place so they can be changed without rewriting board interaction code. The six-puzzle limit, two-minute duration, and failure threshold are this project’s parameters, not established training prescriptions. Tune such choices against observed player behavior rather than assuming the schedule is optimal.

Keep the chessboard and puzzle in one application model
The web frontend uses Scala.js and Tyrian. Tyrian’s official documentation describes it as an Elm-inspired framework for Scala.js applications, with JavaScript interoperability and support for asynchronous effects. Its MVU structure centers on an immutable model, messages representing events, an update function that returns the next model, and a view derived from that model.
That structure suits a puzzle board because the visible position is only part of the state. Michailidis describes storing FEN histories for earlier positions and the solution line. A move attempt becomes a message; the update function checks the attempt against the solution and returns a new puzzle state. The view then renders the board from that state instead of using direct DOM mutation as a second source of truth.

In practical terms, keep related values together: current puzzle, position history, solution progress, selected square or pending move, attempt result, and session progress. Define messages for meaningful events such as a move attempt, puzzle result, recovery transition, or engine response. This makes the path from input to rendered board inspectable: event in, state transition, updated view.
Tyrian’s documentation presents the framework as primarily intended for single-page applications on web and mobile, and notes JavaScript interoperability and asynchronous side-effect handling. Those capabilities are relevant when the application must call browser APIs, while keeping ordinary domain transitions in typed Scala code. The project article quotes Michailidis: “The MVU pattern made handling the complex state of a chess trainer much simpler.” That is the author’s assessment, not a comparative measurement.

Run Stockfish outside the interface’s main work
The project runs Stockfish analysis in a browser Web Worker. The described flow crosses a deliberate boundary: the Scala.js frontend sends data to the worker through JavaScript interop; worker output arrives through a Tyrian subscription; the output is parsed into typed engine messages; and those messages enter the ordinary update loop.
- Send an analysis request: pass the position or other required input to the worker through the browser interop layer.
- Receive worker output: expose incoming messages to the application through a Tyrian subscription.
- Parse before updating: convert raw worker text into typed engine events, handling messages that are malformed or not relevant to the current request.
- Apply a state transition: dispatch the typed event so the update function decides how it affects the current model.
This arrangement keeps engine computation separate from the interface’s normal event loop and centralizes the effect of analysis results. It does not, by itself, prove that the application is free of race conditions: for example, the player may change positions while an earlier analysis is still pending. A robust implementation should associate responses with the position or request that produced them and ignore stale results. Michailidis’s article describes the worker integration but provides no benchmark or test results.

Use Typelevel components for the server-side work
Michailidis describes a backend built with Scala 3, cats-effect, http4s, and Skunk. Typelevel’s project directory characterizes http4s as an HTTP interface for client and server applications and Skunk as a Scala/PostgreSQL data-access library. The Cats documentation describes Cats as functional-programming abstractions for Scala and notes support for Scala.js, Scala Native, and the JVM; the project specifically names cats-effect for asynchronous execution.
Recommended Free Tools
Using Scala across frontend and backend can make shared domain models or validation logic possible, which Michailidis gives as a motivation for the stack. Treat that as an architectural rationale, not a quantified productivity result. Decide deliberately which logic belongs in shared code, such as puzzle or rating validation, and which depends on a platform, such as browser worker communication or database access.

Choose session structure to fit the product goal
A continuous puzzle stream and bounded adaptive waves make different product choices. The project article contrasts its wave-based approach with open-ended practice, while the experimental Better Tactics project describes new practice puzzles and scheduled daily reviews. These are descriptions of implementations, not independent evidence that one method works better.
| Approach | Session structure | Adaptation or review behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Open-ended puzzle stream | Continuous practice rather than a fixed six-puzzle wave | The project article contrasts it with bounded waves; it does not detail a particular stream’s adaptation rules. |
| ChessKinetics-style waves | Six-puzzle waves, with recovery after an early failure and remaining harder puzzles skipped after two failures in a wave | Difficulty uses a rating-derived target bucket. |
| Better Tactics | Practice puzzles with scheduled daily reviews | The project describes new puzzles and future reviews; it also calls itself experimental. |
Choose based on the behavior you want to support: uninterrupted volume, a bounded session with explicit recovery, or revisiting material later. If you build adaptation, log outcomes and review whether players actually complete sessions and return to practice before treating any schedule as effective.
Check framework versions before adopting the design
Tyrian’s official site reported version 0.30.0-M6 when checked for the project notes. That is a milestone release, and version availability changes; verify the current release and its compatibility with your Scala.js and Scala versions before choosing dependencies. The project’s account describes one implementation and does not establish that its exact versions remain current.
The primary account is Dimos Michailidis’s project article, whose page shows “Posted on Sep 18” without exposing a year. Its architecture and product rules should therefore be read as the author’s description of that project, not as a current compatibility matrix or independently audited implementation.
