Building a Real Android Development Loop on an ARM64 Phone with Termux and ADT

Running an Android development loop on an ARM64 phone depends on matching every tool to the runtime that executes it. Here is how Termux, PRoot, and ADB fit together, and what remains unverified.

Yes, you can run a practical Android development loop on an ARM64 phone, but only if every tool in the chain is built for the environment that actually executes it. An ARM64 processor does not guarantee that a Linux-built Android SDK binary will run inside Termux. The loop works when you edit, build, package, sign, install, and test with tools matched to the runtime, and when you confirm each step on the device rather than assuming it.

What a real loop has to do

A development loop is only real if the app you build ends up installed and running on the handset you are holding. That means five stages happen on or from the phone: writing or editing source, compiling resources and code, packaging and signing an APK, installing it through ADB, and exercising the feature on the device. If any stage depends on a binary that cannot run in your environment, the loop breaks at that point, usually with a “not found” or “cannot execute” error that looks more mysterious than it is.

Why ARM64 alone is not enough

Termux runs programs natively on Android. Its packages are built against Android’s bionic C library and use Termux-specific installation paths, such as the prefix under its own data directory. A toolchain built for a standard Linux distribution expects glibc and conventional system paths. Those assumptions differ, so a binary can be the right CPU architecture and still fail to load.

This is the main reason the workflow is hard to generalize. Matching the processor type answers only one question. You also need to know which C library the binary was built against and which userland is launching it.

Termux’s own documentation says its package system can build packages on the device, but some builds are unsupported because required host build tools are not available. Treat that as a limit to plan around: a Gradle project, an annotation processor, or a native plugin may need something the phone cannot provide, even when the core tools install cleanly.

What is documented and what is only claimed

Three kinds of evidence are relevant, and they carry different weight.

  • A search-indexed description of ADT reports ARM64 tools for Linux glibc and says they were validated on a Redmi Turbo 4 Pro running Termux with a PRoot Debian environment. The project page could not be opened while preparing this article, so the specific tool list and the device validation are self-reported and unconfirmed here. Treat that setup as a lead to verify, not as a reproduced result, and do not assume it applies to other ARM64 phones or Android versions.

Choosing an environment

The sources point to two possible arrangements. The first runs everything natively in Termux. The second adds a Linux userland through PRoot, which is the arrangement named in the ADT description. They are not interchangeable, and each trade-off below should be checked against your own project.

Factor Native Termux Termux with PRoot Debian (glibc userland)
Runtime and C library Android bionic, Termux prefix paths Linux glibc inside the PRoot guest; Termux prefix still underneath
Binary compatibility Only binaries built for Termux or bionic run directly Glibc-targeted binaries can run inside the guest if their dependencies are present
Tool coverage Depends on Termux packages; some host build tools may be missing Depends on what the guest distribution packages and on the ADT instructions, which were not confirmed
Deployment to the phone ADB client and device connection must be configured for the same device Same question; the guest does not change how ADB reaches Android
Evidence level Termux documentation covers the runtime model Only a device-specific project claim, unverified in this article

Neither row is a performance comparison. No controlled measurement of build time, battery use, or reliability is available for either approach, so choose based on what your project needs to compile, not on speed claims.

Before you start: setup checks

  • Android version: Termux states that full app and package support is for Android 7 or later. Older devices may install an old build but are outside the documented scope.
  • Install source: Termux warns against mixing Termux APKs signed by different distribution sources. Install the app and its packages from one source, and do not combine a Termux app build with packages from another channel.
  • Current version: Termux’s README listed v0.118.3 as its latest release when checked for this article. Check the current release and repository instructions before installing, because package and app versions change.
  • Storage and time: Android SDK components, Gradle caches, and dependencies are large and slow to fetch on a phone. Plan for free storage and an uninterrupted network connection before the first build. No minimum RAM or storage figure is established by the sources.

The build loop, stage by stage

Android’s documentation names the stages, which gives you a vocabulary for diagnosing failures. The exact Gradle integration and the choice of compatible executables must come from the verified ADT instructions for your chosen environment.

1. Edit and build

Write source in Termux with an editor you install through its package manager. Confirm that the Java runtime and any Gradle wrapper you use are built for your environment before running a full build. A quick way to see what the shell is actually running is to check the architecture and the loader of a binary:

uname -m
file $(command -v aapt2)
ldd $(command -v aapt2)

On a native Termux setup, ldd should resolve against Termux’s own library paths. If it reports a missing glibc loader or library, that binary was built for a different runtime and will not run in this shell. Those commands do not validate a build by themselves; they only tell you which runtime a binary expects.

2. Package and sign

Android’s tool roles map onto three steps:

  • AAPT2 compiles and packages resources into the APK.
  • zipalign aligns uncompressed data in the APK so the platform can access it efficiently.
  • apksigner signs the APK and verifies its signature.

Run them in that order, and use the same signing key for every build you intend to update in place. Changing the key forces an uninstall before a new build can replace the old one.

3. Install and inspect

ADB installs the APK, runs shell commands, and moves files. From a workstation, the common commands are:

adb devices
adb install -r app-debug.apk
adb logcat -d | tail -n 200

Connection options are documented in Android’s guide to running apps on a hardware device. USB debugging is enabled under Settings > About phone by tapping Build number seven times, then Settings > System > Developer options > USB debugging. Wireless debugging is available under Developer options, where you pair a device with a pairing code before connecting. Android’s examples assume a separate computer. Using an ADB client on the same phone as the build environment is a configuration you must verify yourself; the sources do not confirm a specific on-device route, so record exactly how the client connects to the device and what host and port it uses.

4. Validate on the phone

Launch the installed app, exercise the feature you changed, and read the logs on the real device. Android’s developer documentation states plainly: “Always test your Android app on a real device before releasing it to users.” That statement comes from the Android Developers page on running apps on a hardware device, which does not name an individual author.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • “not found” or “cannot execute” for a build tool: the binary likely targets glibc or another runtime. Confirm with the ldd check above, then use a package built for your environment.
  • A Gradle task fails on a native plugin: the plugin may need a host build tool that Termux does not provide. Check Termux’s build limits and the project’s own requirements before changing code.
  • adb devices shows “unauthorized”: accept the USB debugging authorization prompt on the phone, then run the command again.
  • Install fails with a signature or version conflict: the installed copy was signed with a different key. Uninstall the old package first, understanding that its data is removed, then install the new build.
  • Install fails on an older Android version: check the APK’s minimum SDK value against the device’s Android version, and confirm the device is within Termux’s documented Android 7 or later scope.

Recording your own run

Because the ADT device claim is unconfirmed, the only way to know whether your setup works is to record it. Keep these details with every attempt:

  • Phone model, Android version, and Termux app source and version
  • Environment: native Termux or PRoot guest, with the guest distribution name
  • Exact tool versions for Java, Gradle, AAPT2, zipalign, apksigner, and ADB
  • Commands run, in order, and the first error message if any
  • Whether the APK installed, launched, and exercised the target feature

A run that stops at a documented limit is still useful evidence. Recording the failing binary and its runtime tells the next reader more than a vague claim that the setup works.
