Yes. When you set up Nest Wifi, enter the same Wi-Fi network name (SSID) and password your old router used, and previously connected devices will not need to be reconnected, according to Google’s Home and Nest Help pages. Both values are set in the Google Home app under Home → Wi-Fi → Network settings. Reusing only one of them does not carry the same guidance, so change both or neither.
Before you start
- Write down the exact network name and password from the old router. Check the label on the router or the admin page, because a single character difference is enough to make devices treat the network as new.
- Install the Google Home app on your phone and make sure the phone can reach the current network.
- Decide what happens to the old router. Google’s guidance is to turn it off once the Nest Wifi network works, or to put it in bridge mode if it must stay connected.
Keep the old name and password on Nest Wifi
Google’s help pages describe the steps below as the documented way to carry your credentials over. The menu labels are those shown on Google’s English help pages at the time of writing.

- Set up your Nest Wifi network in the Google Home app, following the on-screen prompts.
- Open Home → Wi-Fi → Network settings, select the network name, enter the old network name, and save. Google says names must be 1–31 characters and should not have an accidental leading or trailing space. (Change Wi-Fi network name)
- Open Home → Wi-Fi → Network settings, select the password, enter the old router’s password, and save. Google documents an 8–63 character alphanumeric password with no spaces. (Change Wi-Fi password)
- Turn off the old router once the new network is working. If it has to stay on, enable bridge mode on it so it stops broadcasting a competing network.
Why the old router must stop broadcasting
If two routers broadcast the same name and password, a device may connect to either one, and it can switch between them. Google describes the result as unexpected behavior, which in practice often looks like a device that drops off, reconnects slowly, or appears to work only in part of the house. Turning the old router off is the simplest fix; bridge mode is the option when the old hardware is still needed for something else.

What happens to your devices
The main reason to keep the credentials is to avoid touching every device in the house. The table compares the two paths.
#1 Best Overall
- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
| Question | Keep old name and password | Choose new name or password |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort across existing devices | Not required for devices already on the network, according to Google’s help page for changing the network name | Each device must be updated with the new network name or password |
| Device-specific reconnection | Google says Nest and Home devices may still need their own steps after a credential or router change (connect Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network) | Same device-specific steps apply, and in addition each device must be given the new credentials |
| Old router still broadcasting | Can cause devices to attach to either router, so turn it off or bridge it | Can cause the same problem, and the old name stays visible to devices that still use it |
Google’s English help page for the network name states the core point in plain terms: “If you reuse a network name and password from an old router, you won’t have to reconnect devices that were previously on the network.” That sentence is the reason this approach is recommended, and it applies only when both values match.
Changing the password later
If you change the Wi-Fi password on Nest Wifi to a different value after setup, devices stop connecting until each one receives the new password. Google’s Change Wi-Fi password page says the Home app can show a network insight after seven days for a device that has not been updated, so check the app if a device has been offline for a while.

If a Google or Nest device does not reconnect
Google’s general guidance on new networks says that a Nest or Home device may need to be reconnected even when the network name and password match. Try these steps in order:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the Google Home app and check that the device appears on the new network.
- Restart the device and confirm it is within range of the Nest Wifi point.
- If the app cannot change the device’s network settings, or ordinary steps fail, Google says a factory reset and setup may be required. Follow the device-type instructions on Google’s connection help page before resetting.
Do you have to buy Nest Wifi to do this?
No. Keeping the old name and password is a settings change that works with the Google Home app. Nest Wifi is Google’s own router and mesh system, and Google’s product post describes it as a router with setup through the Google Home app (Google Blog, Boost your home’s signal and style with Nest Wifi). Buy it only if you are replacing the router anyway. The credential steps do not require new hardware.

Notes on the exact limits
Google’s password page describes the password as 8–63 alphanumeric characters with no spaces. If your current password includes symbols or spaces, check the wording on the current page before relying on reuse, because the limits Google documents are the ones to test against. Network names follow the 1–31 character limit described above.
