What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A browser-based random name picker is straightforward to build, but a useful one needs more than a button that chooses a line. Decide how to handle blank and duplicate entries, whether winners can repeat, how to map random values fairly to list positions, and how to make results accessible and credible. These four small fixes make the behavior clear without overstating what a local draw can prove.
1. Clean up input without silently changing the odds
Use one entry per line, then trim whitespace and ignore blank lines. The important choice is what to do with identical lines: keep them as separate entries or collapse them into one. Neither policy is universal; tell users which behavior the picker applies.

If duplicate lines remain, each is a separate chance. For example, if “Alex” appears twice and “Blair” once, Alex has two entries in the pool and Blair has one. Deduplicating those lines changes the pool and therefore the odds. Avoid presenting this as mere formatting cleanup.
2. Choose whether winners can repeat
For a single draw, repeat policy has no effect. For several winners, make the choice visible because it changes what a sequence of draws means.

| Policy | How it works | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| With replacement | Each draw uses the full pool again, so the same entry can be selected more than once. | When each draw should be independent and repeated winners are allowed. |
| Without replacement | Remove each selected entry from the eligible pool before the next draw, or shuffle the pool and take the requested number of entries. | When each entry may win only once in a round. |
For a no-repeat draw, validate the requested winner count against the number of eligible entries. If the request is larger, explain the limit and ask for a smaller count rather than returning duplicates or an incomplete result without explanation.
3. Use a strong random source and map it without bias
The browser’s Crypto.getRandomValues() API fills integer typed arrays with cryptographically strong random values. MDN describes it this way: “The Crypto.getRandomValues() method lets you get cryptographically strong random values.” Its documentation also notes that implementations use a pseudorandom generator seeded with enough entropy. See MDN’s Crypto.getRandomValues() documentation.

Choosing an entry requires converting a random value into an index from 0 to N−1, where N is the number of eligible entries. Do not assume that taking a random integer modulo N is always even: if the source range does not divide evenly by N, some indices receive an extra possible source value. Rejection sampling avoids that remainder bias by discarding values outside the largest evenly divisible range, then mapping the accepted value to an index. See MDN’s discussion of random integer selection and modulo bias.

Describe the result as using cryptographically strong randomness, not as mathematically perfect or physically “true” randomness. A good random source and an unbiased mapping address the selection mechanism; they do not by themselves make the whole process publicly verifiable.

4. Make results accessible and credible
Make the controls and result usable without a mouse
Keep the input and draw controls reachable by keyboard. Present the selected name as readable text that assistive technology can announce; an animation may reveal the result, but it must not be the only way to find out who was selected. Treat keyboard operation and announced text as implementation checks, not assumptions guaranteed by adding an animation.
Distinguish a random draw from an auditable draw
A local browser picker can select randomly, but an observer generally cannot establish whether its operator reran the draw or kept only a preferred result. If a public giveaway needs verifiable evidence, use a process that records the draw or lets others independently verify it. Randomness describes how a result is selected; auditability concerns whether the process can be checked.

Before you publish the picker
- State whether blank lines are ignored and whether repeated lines count as separate chances.
- Label the multiple-winner setting as with or without replacement, and prevent no-repeat requests from exceeding the eligible pool.
- Use a cryptographically strong browser random source and avoid biased index mapping.
- Ensure keyboard users can operate the picker and that the result is available as text to assistive technology.
- For a public giveaway that requires proof, provide a recorded or independently verifiable draw process rather than relying on a local result alone.
