I built a Postman-like workspace for local scripts, but the most important design question is not how closely it resembles Postman. It is what “local” means: where requests and environments live, whether a cloud account is involved, how secrets are handled, and whether the same definitions can be shared or run in automation. Those details determine whether a local-script workspace fits your workflow; they cannot be inferred from the interface alone.
What “local” needs to mean in a script workspace
A workspace can look local while still relying on a remote service for storage, authentication, or synchronization. To judge this implementation, the relevant questions are concrete: Are request definitions saved as files on your machine? Is an account required to use the core workflow? Can the files be reviewed in Git? Does running a request require network access to a service, or only to the API being tested?

I built the workspace around local scripts. That describes its organizing idea, not a complete feature guarantee: the available details do not establish its storage format, authentication requirements, secret-handling rules, offline behavior, or automation support. I therefore can’t claim that it is fully offline, account-free, safe to commit secrets, or compatible with existing Postman collections.
How Postman’s CLI fits into a local workflow
Postman already documents a terminal-based workflow for working with local API assets. Its CLI workspace commands cover validating and synchronizing local collections, environments, and specifications with cloud workspaces. The documented commands include connecting or disconnecting Git, pulling assets, comparing differences, and pushing changes. See Postman CLI workspace commands.

That makes “local versus Postman” an incomplete comparison. A more useful question is whether local files are the source of truth, a working copy that can be synchronized, or simply one part of a broader cloud-connected workflow. Postman’s documentation describes synchronization with cloud workspaces, so its local-file support should not be mistaken for proof that every operation works offline.
Environments and secrets need separate scrutiny
Postman documents commands for local environment files as well as cloud environments, including creating and validating local environment files before pushing them. That establishes support for local environment-file workflows; it does not establish that secrets are automatically excluded from version control. Check the actual file contents and sharing behavior before committing environment files. See Postman CLI environment commands.

The CLI is not a promise that every command is account-free
Postman describes its CLI as its official, signed command-line tool for running and managing collections, specifications, mocks, and other Postman elements from a terminal or CI/CD pipeline. Its documentation also says that some commands depend on the user’s plan. The collection commands include running collections with environment variables and scripts, but command behavior can depend on local mode and configuration. Do not assume that an introductory setup path establishes offline or account-free access for every operation. See the Postman CLI overview and Postman CLI collection commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAlternatives use different storage and interaction models
There is no single definition of a local API workspace. Hoppscotch presents web, desktop, and CLI options, and describes collections and environment variables stored in cloud or local session storage. Those options make it relevant if you want to choose how to interact with an API, but they do not prove that every workflow is fully offline or that data is always stored only on your device. See the Hoppscotch project page.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Insomnia organizes much of its work around API collections and documents scripting. Its scripts documentation notes that some deprecated Postman interfaces are not supported yet, so an existing Postman script may require adaptation rather than a direct move. See Kong’s API collections documentation and scripts documentation.
Choose by workflow, not by a feature checklist
The useful comparison is how a tool fits the way you edit, share, and run API work. Product documentation describes different capabilities, but it does not provide a controlled head-to-head evaluation or establish a universal winner.

- File ownership: Find out whether request definitions are ordinary local files, browser or session data, or assets in a cloud workspace.
- Scripts: Check which script hooks and interfaces are supported, especially when bringing existing Postman scripts.
- Environments and secrets: Verify variable scope, where values are stored, and what is safe to share or commit.
- Git workflow: Determine whether changes are edited directly in version-controlled files or synchronized through another workspace, and how conflicts are handled.
- Automation: Confirm that a CLI exists for the operations you need, what output it produces, and whether CI/CD use depends on a particular account or plan.
- Migration: Test a representative request and script before moving a large collection; collection import does not by itself guarantee script compatibility.
What this build story establishes
The workspace is a Postman-like space organized around local scripts. That is the design premise. It does not, on its own, establish the details readers need to choose it as a replacement: storage format, environment and secret behavior, import compatibility, offline operation, and CLI or CI support. Treat those as implementation-specific questions to verify, rather than assuming the answers from the word “local.”
