Netflix says the account country changes only when you move: cancel your membership, wait for it to end, then restart Netflix while you’re in the new country. If you’re traveling or Netflix detects the wrong location, the right steps are different.
Can you change your Netflix region without moving?
No. Netflix does not offer a setting to freely switch your account country or choose another country’s catalog. Netflix says, “The country on your account can’t be changed unless you move to a new one.” Netflix’s account-country guidance describes the process for members who have actually relocated.

A VPN is not a supported way to select a foreign catalog. Netflix says a VPN may make your connection appear to come from somewhere other than your physical location; while it is active, Netflix may show only titles available worldwide. Netflix also says VPNs are unsupported for live events and ad-supported viewing. See Netflix’s VPN guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you moved to another country, restart your membership there
- Cancel your Netflix membership. Your account remains active until the current billing period ends.
- Wait for the membership to end. Netflix’s stated process requires the existing membership to finish before restarting.
- Restart Netflix while physically in the new country. The restart in that country is what changes the account country.
Netflix says viewing activity, recommendations, ratings, and account details are retained for 24 months after account closure. The new country may have different catalogs, prices and billing currency, payment methods, downloads, audio and subtitle options, and maturity ratings. Netflix explains what can change after a move; its moving guidance covers account details.

If you’re traveling, your account country does not automatically change
Travel affects which titles are available where you are; it is not the same as moving and restarting your membership. Regional licensing can make a title unavailable while you are abroad, even if you could watch it at home.
A downloaded title won’t play abroad
A download may be blocked in a country where Netflix does not have the relevant rights. For the download-location error it documents, Netflix advises connecting in a country where the title is available and launching the app so it can determine your location. Netflix’s download help gives the applicable steps.

If Netflix shows the wrong country, check your network location
A mismatch may be caused by a VPN or by how your internet connection is being located. Netflix’s diagnostic steps are:
- On a device connected to the same network as the affected Netflix device, go to fast.com.
- Select Show more info and check the country shown beside Client.
- If it shows a VPN or a country that does not match your location, turn off any active VPN and check Netflix again.
- If the country is still wrong, reset the device’s network settings and restore the modem or router settings.
- If the mismatch continues, contact your internet service provider and give them the country and IP address shown by the check.
These steps address a location-detection problem; they do not change the regional rights for a title. Netflix’s wrong-country troubleshooting page has its full guidance.

Netflix Household is separate from your account country
A Netflix Household is based on devices connected to the internet at the main place where Netflix is watched. Household verification concerns which devices belong to that viewing location; it does not change the account country or grant access to another region’s catalog. People outside the household need their own account or may be added as an extra member, subject to Netflix’s options. Netflix explains Household settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why Netflix catalogs differ by country
Netflix says it is available in over 190 countries, with a catalog for each. The figure appears on its Help Center page, which does not state a publication year. Catalogs differ because regional popularity and licensing vary: studios or distributors may hold rights only in certain places, a title may not be licensed in a region, or another streaming platform may have exclusive rights there. Even some titles Netflix owns worldwide can be unavailable in a country where another company holds the regional rights. Netflix’s catalog-availability explanation describes these factors.

That means an unavailable title is not necessarily evidence that your account is set to the wrong country. If the location check matches where you are, the title may simply not be licensed there.
