To update or cancel a calendar invite reliably, keep the event’s identity stable in your application and save the calendar provider’s event ID when you create it. For iCalendar exchange, retain a separate stable UID. Then use the provider’s documented update or cancellation operation—because updating an event and notifying attendees that it is canceled are not always the same action.
Keep separate identifiers for your app, the provider, and iCalendar
An event needs an identity that survives edits. RFC 5545 requires a UID in a VEVENT and defines it as a persistent, globally unique identifier. Reuse the same UID for the same event when exchanging iCalendar data; do not generate a new one just because the event’s time or details changed.

Also save the event ID returned by the calendar provider. These identifiers serve different purposes: a provider event ID is used for that provider’s API operations, while the iCalendar UID identifies the calendar component across iCalendar exchanges. Google explicitly distinguishes its event id from iCalUID. For recurring events, individual occurrences have different event IDs but share an iCalUID.
- Your application’s event key: the identifier your own database uses to find the event record.
- Provider event ID: the identifier needed to retrieve, update, or remove the event through the same calendar provider.
- iCalendar UID: the stable component identifier used for iCalendar interoperability, if your application exchanges that format.
Store the provider name and calendar ID alongside the provider event ID. Keep the iCalendar UID in a separate field when interoperability matters. This prevents an app-level identifier or iCalendar UID from being mistakenly sent where a provider-specific event ID is required.

Create the event and persist the returned identity
Google Calendar
Google creates events through events.insert. The request needs a calendar ID and an event body; the documented required event fields are start and end. Use date-time fields for a timed event and date fields for an all-day event. The authenticated user must have write access to the selected calendar, and the application needs an authorization scope that permits calendar writes.
After creation, save the returned event resource identifiers your application will need later, including the provider event ID. If you also use iCalendar, preserve the distinct iCalUID rather than treating it as interchangeable with the API ID.
Microsoft Graph
Microsoft Graph supports creating, updating, deleting, and canceling calendar events. The important design step is the same: retain the provider’s event identity and enough calendar context to address that event in later operations. The reviewed API guidance establishes those Graph operations, but not a current Node.js SDK package name, version, or setup procedure.

Keep provider calls behind your own boundary
Do not make your event record depend on a particular SDK’s object shape. A provider adapter can expose application-level operations such as createEvent, getEvent, updateEvent, and cancelEvent, while your database retains the provider identifiers and stable iCalendar UID. Treat those method names as an application design, not as documented SDK calls.
Before choosing a Node.js client package or copying package-specific code, check the calendar provider’s current official JavaScript client documentation. The API behavior described here does not establish a current SDK version or installation command.
Update Google events without overwriting newer changes
Use a full update only when you can rebuild the complete resource
Google’s events.update is a full-resource operation, not a partial update. If your application sends only the fields it wants to change, it risks replacing other event data with an incomplete resource. Retrieve the current event first, preserve the fields your application needs, and submit the updated resource.

Use etags to guard against concurrent edits
Another attendee or application may change the event after your app reads it. Google recommends using etags for atomicity when retrieving and updating an event. In practical terms, use the current event version as a guard so a stale edit does not silently overwrite a change made in the meantime; handle a conflict by fetching the latest event and reconciling the intended change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPatch carefully when only selected fields should change
Google also offers events.patch, which leaves omitted fields unchanged. However, any array included in a patch replaces the existing array rather than merging with it. If you patch attendees or another array-valued field, construct the complete array you intend to keep. Google documents that each patch consumes three quota units.
Choose cancellation behavior deliberately
Google Calendar: delete the event
Google provides an event delete operation for removing an event. Use the provider’s documented delete method for that purpose, but do not promise a particular attendee notification outcome unless your implementation has verified the exact request options and behavior.

Microsoft Graph: cancel to send an organizer notice
Graph distinguishes cancellation from deletion. Its event cancel action is restricted to the organizer and can send an optional comment to attendees. Use cancellation when the intended action is to notify attendees that the organizer is canceling the event; do not treat deletion as an equivalent notification action.
Design your application’s user-facing choices around the result, not just the HTTP operation: removing an event and sending attendees a cancellation notice are different outcomes. Check that the authenticated account is the organizer before offering the Graph cancellation action.
Do not assume every invite immediately appears on every attendee’s calendar
An API accepting an event request does not guarantee that every recipient will see it on their calendar before accepting or responding. Google documents that attendee settings and whether the sender is known to the recipient can affect whether the invitation appears before the recipient adds it or RSVPs. Set expectations accordingly, and avoid interpreting a successful event creation call as proof of delivery or visibility for every attendee.
Quick Recap
Implementation checklist
- Choose the provider and calendar, then confirm that the authenticated user has the required write access.
- Create the event with the provider’s documented operation and the correct timed or all-day date fields.
- Persist the provider event ID and calendar context returned or used for the creation request.
- Keep a stable iCalendar UID for the same component when exchanging iCalendar data; store it separately from the provider ID.
- For Google full updates, retrieve the current resource, preserve needed fields, and use etags to protect against stale writes.
- For Google patches, remember that a supplied array replaces the old array and that each patch uses three quota units.
- Choose deletion or organizer cancellation based on whether the desired outcome includes a cancellation notice to attendees.
- Verify current Node.js client instructions before relying on a package name, version, or SDK-specific method signature.
