The captures become Markdown files in your vault, but you still need to choose what is worth saving and review it later.
What “without writing notes” means in Obsidian
Obsidian’s free Web Clipper is a browser extension for highlighting web pages and saving web content to an Obsidian vault. It can capture material and page details without requiring you to compose each source note from scratch. The saved files are local Markdown, rather than entries held only in a web service. Obsidian’s Web Clipper guide describes the extension and its storage; the Obsidian Blog’s November 11, 2024 announcement, “Save the web,” says: “Anything you save is stored as durable Markdown files that you can read offline, and preserve for the long term.”

That convenience does not turn a folder of captures into understanding. You still decide which material to keep, how to organize it, and whether to revisit or connect it to your own ideas. Start with one inbox folder and a simple template, then add structure only when it improves retrieval.

1. Clip complete pages into an inbox
Set up a simple capture destination
- Install the official Obsidian Web Clipper extension from a supported browser’s extension directory. Obsidian lists browser availability in its Web Clipper guide.
- Create a template that saves captures into a dedicated inbox folder in your vault. Templates can customize the content saved by the clipper.
- Open a page you want to keep and use the extension’s add-to-Obsidian action. By default, the clipper attempts to extract the page’s main article content.
An inbox keeps capture fast: you do not have to settle the final location or write a summary at the moment you encounter a useful source. Later, review the folder and move, tag, or annotate only the material that merits more attention.
Know what a full-page clip preserves
Clipping saves text and page information, but images are not downloaded automatically. A saved page can contain references to images hosted at their original web URLs, which may not work offline or if the remote address stops serving the image. If an image is essential to your reference, do not assume the clip includes a local copy; check the saved note and decide how to preserve it separately. 2. Save highlights or selected passages
If you already know which lines matter, capture those rather than the full article. Select text on the page or use the clipper’s highlighter, then send the selection to Obsidian. The capture guide says selections or highlights override the default main-content extraction, so this route creates a focused excerpt instead of a complete page capture.
This is useful when you want a compact record of a particular claim, definition, or passage. Keep enough source context—such as the page title and URL through the clipper’s page information—to make the excerpt traceable when you return to it. A short excerpt is easier to scan, but it cannot stand in for surrounding qualifications you may later need.

3. Turn captured pages into structured source records
Use templates for repeatable fields
Templates can shape captured content and use extracted page metadata, allowing source notes to share properties such as title, author, date, source, category, or tags. Obsidian’s feature description lists templates for articles, recipes, references, and academic papers; the capture guide explains how templates affect saved output. Add only fields you expect to use—for example, a category if you filter by subject, or an author field if you compare work by person.
Keep the system small enough to maintain
A structured record can make a large collection easier to search and compare, but every field adds a decision and possible cleanup. Begin with a single template and a few useful properties. If a field is often empty or never helps you find material, remove it rather than treating every capture as a form to complete.

What clipping does—and does not—solve
The Web Clipper removes much of the manual copying and formatting involved in creating source notes. It does not decide whether a source is reliable, explain why it matters, or combine its ideas with other material. Obsidian’s November 11, 2024 announcement describes the goal as making it easy to capture web content that “can be referenced and expanded upon in your notes.” The distinction matters: clipping is a way to collect references, not a substitute for the thinking that turns references into a useful knowledge base.

Clipped files are stored locally in the vault. Obsidian lists Sync as an add-on service for synchronizing notes across devices; the official help index does not describe Sync as a requirement for clipping. See the Obsidian Help index for its Sync listing.
