You can run a Debian userland on an Android phone without rooting it: install Termux, add PRoot-Distro, then install Debian. The result is a Debian filesystem and shell for Debian packages and tools—not a phone converted to native Debian. Android remains in control and provides the Linux kernel.
What this setup turns your phone into
Termux provides the Android app environment, and PRoot-Distro installs and manages a Debian userland inside it. PRoot gives that userland chroot-like filesystem behavior without requiring device root. In practical terms, you can open a Debian shell and work with Debian packages, but Android is still the host operating system. The PRoot-Distro project describes rootless Linux userlands in Termux and includes desktop-class Linux on phones and tablets among its use cases.

This is different from replacing Android with Debian or installing Debian directly on the phone as its native operating system. It is also different from gaining Android root access. The Debian bookworm PRoot manual explains that guest programs use the host kernel; PRoot can fake a root identity and selected operations inside its environment, but that does not grant real root privileges on Android.

Install Debian in Termux
Use the commands documented by PRoot-Distro. Its README identifies Termux from F-Droid or Termux GitHub Releases as the Android route; package availability and instructions can change, so consult the current project README if a command or package name differs.

Install Debian:
proot-distro install debian -
Enter the Debian environment:

After login, you are working in the Debian userland. Follow Debian and package-specific documentation for what you want to do there; the command sequence alone does not configure a graphical desktop or guarantee that a particular Linux application will run.

Understand the limits before relying on it
“Root” inside Debian is not Android root
Programs may see a simulated root identity within the PRoot environment. That is an emulation of selected behavior, not permission to perform privileged operations on the Android host. Do not treat it as a way to bypass Android’s security controls or manage the device like a rooted phone.
Debian does not bring its own kernel
PRoot provides a user-space, chroot-like environment; guest programs rely on Android’s host kernel. As a result, kernel-dependent services, direct hardware access, and features that need particular kernel support cannot be assumed to work simply because the Debian filesystem is present.

Application compatibility is device- and task-specific
The project describes desktop-class Linux on a phone or tablet as a use case, but that is not a guarantee that any particular graphical setup or desktop application works on every Android device. The cited documentation does not establish universal performance, battery life, or hardware compatibility. If a specific application or feature is the reason you want Debian, test that exact workload on your phone before depending on it.

The Debian Wiki also lists other Android approaches, including tools that use PRoot, and cautions that installation details depend on the chosen tool. This comparison is about privilege requirements, not a claim that one method is faster or more compatible. If you mainly want Debian command-line tools without changing Android’s root status, Termux with PRoot-Distro fits that goal. If you need native Debian or device capabilities unavailable through this userland, investigate device-specific alternatives and their requirements rather than assuming this setup provides them.

Using it as a small desktop environment
A phone can host a desktop-class Linux userland, but the Termux and PRoot-Distro installation above does not itself provide a configured graphical desktop. Whether a particular graphical configuration works depends on the setup and device; check the relevant project documentation and verify the applications you need. A Bluetooth keyboard is an optional convenience for longer typing, not a requirement of the Debian installation.
