To change models without rebuilding your AI coding chat, make the application—not a provider SDK—the owner of conversation state, tool execution, and stream events. Put provider-specific request and response handling behind adapters, record model capabilities explicitly, and treat every model change as a migration that must pass your own workflow tests.
Start with contracts your application owns
A shared model interface can reduce provider coupling, but it cannot make different models behave identically. Define the data your product needs, then translate it at the provider boundary. Keep provider selection and model identifiers in configuration rather than scattering them through chat logic.

For example, a conversation record can hold application-generated IDs, messages, content blocks, tool requests and results, and lifecycle metadata. An adapter maps that representation to a provider’s API and maps its response back. Preserve provider-specific fields as optional extensions or opaque payloads if a later turn may need them; silently discarding them can make a transcript impossible to continue faithfully.

| Boundary | Application owns | Adapter or provider-specific handling |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation | Conversation, message, run, and tool-call IDs; user-visible messages and results | Provider-specific request formatting and any required opaque context |
| Model configuration | Selected provider, model ID, and feature requirements | Provider endpoint, SDK details, and supported parameter mapping |
| Tools | Tool catalog, validation, authorization, execution, and result correlation | Provider-specific tool declaration and call representation |
| Streaming | Stable events delivered to the client, ordering, and replay behavior | Provider-specific stream chunks and their translation |
Frameworks such as LangChain document common chat-model interfaces that can help with provider switching and model comparison. Treat that interface as a seam in your application, not as a guarantee that every provider or model supports the same tools, structured output, streaming, parameters, or semantics. Use explicit provider identifiers and pin model IDs when predictable behavior matters; moving aliases can change underneath an otherwise unchanged integration.

Keep tool execution under application control
A model-produced tool call is a request, not permission to act. The application should own the loop: expose the allowed tools, receive a call, validate it, authorize it, execute it, return a correlated result, and continue the model conversation until a final response or an application-defined limit.
- Publish a narrow catalog. Describe only the operations the current task and user are allowed to request. A repository read, file edit, shell command, and external action should not share a single broad permission.
- Validate the call. Check that the tool name exists and its arguments conform to the current schema. Reject unknown tools and malformed arguments before execution.
- Authorize independently. Apply user, workspace, repository, and action-level permissions in trusted application code. Do not use the model’s choice of tool as authorization.
- Execute with safeguards. Apply timeouts and, for side effects, suitable idempotency controls. Capture success and failure as application events.
- Return a correlated result. Associate the result with the originating tool-call ID, then let the model continue with the updated conversation.
OpenAI describes function calling as a multi-step conversation managed by the application. Google’s Gemini documentation likewise distinguishes custom function calls executed by the application from built-in tools managed on the provider side. Keep these cases separate in your design: a server-side tool’s availability, execution, and returned state may not follow the same lifecycle as an application-executed function.
Give the client a stable stream protocol
Do not make the browser or desktop client interpret each provider’s raw stream format. Normalize incoming chunks into application-owned events with stable identifiers and ordering. A useful protocol has explicit run, message, content-block, and tool lifecycle events rather than treating the whole response as one growing text string.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run: started, finished, or failed.
- Message: started and finished, with a stable message ID.
- Content block: started, delta, and finished, correlated to its message.
- Tool: started, output delta where applicable, finished, or errored, correlated to its tool-call ID.
- Ordering and recovery: sequence numbers and stable correlation IDs so a client can reconstruct events and, where supported by the application, resume after disconnection.
The Agent Protocol’s streaming specification describes explicit event boundaries, tool lifecycle events, and sequence-based replay. Use those concepts even if you define a different internal schema. In particular, streamed tool arguments may arrive as fragments and may not yet form valid JSON. Buffer the complete input, parse it, validate it against the tool schema, and check permissions before execution; never launch a tool from an incomplete fragment.

Make conversation portability a tested property
Store the user-visible thread and tool results in an application-level representation, separate from provider request formatting and temporary provider state. That makes it possible to render and audit a conversation even if a provider session is unavailable. It does not mean that every provider’s transcript can be replayed unchanged elsewhere: providers can differ in tool-call formats, required context, and other conversation semantics.
Before switching providers in the middle of a conversation, test the transcript shapes your product actually uses. Include long histories, tool calls with results, attachments and content blocks, retries, summaries, refusals, and any opaque context needed by the current provider. If a conversation cannot safely continue on the new model, make that boundary explicit in the product rather than silently dropping context or presenting a fresh-model response as if it had seen the entire thread.

A new model ID is not always a drop-in replacement. Before routing production traffic to a candidate, verify the model’s endpoint and SDK requirements, supported parameters and reasoning controls, context limits, tool schema and parallel-call behavior, streaming mapping, refusal and error behavior, prompt assumptions, data handling, rate limits, latency, and cost. Maintain a capability matrix by provider and model so unsupported features are visible instead of being inferred from a common wrapper.
Model retirement dates and migration details can change. OpenAI’s deprecations documentation records current schedules and says advance notice is provided; check the current schedule when planning a migration rather than relying on an old date. Anthropic’s migration guidance illustrates why verification is model-specific: changes can involve parameters, thinking behavior, prompts, platform-specific model IDs, and refusals, as well as cost and rate-limit baselines.

- Identify the change. Record the retiring or replaced model, the target model ID, the hosting platform, and any endpoint or SDK updates required.
- Map capabilities. Compare parameters, reasoning controls, context limits, tool behavior, streaming events, refusal handling, and data practices against the features your application uses.
- Review prompts and state. Check system and tool instructions, transcript conversion, attachments, summaries, and any provider-specific context for assumptions tied to the old model.
- Run representative evaluations. Compare the current and candidate models on the same coding-chat tasks before changing the default route.
- Set operational baselines. Measure latency, cost, rate-limit behavior, errors, and fallback needs for the target configuration.
- Release with a rollback path. Change routing through configuration or a feature flag, start with a limited cohort, and retain a way to restore the previous model configuration.
Evaluate the workflows, not just the model’s prose
Build a small, versioned evaluation set from real coding-chat tasks. Include explaining code, proposing a patch, making a constrained edit, selecting and calling a tool, recovering from a tool error, continuing after a long transcript, and handling a refusal or malformed tool call. Run the same cases against the current and candidate configurations.
Compare whether each task was completed correctly, whether tool choices and arguments were valid, whether the stream rendered and recovered as intended, and how latency and cost changed. There is no universal pass threshold established for every coding assistant; set thresholds that reflect your own product’s risk and use cases. A model that writes a convincing final answer but breaks tool correlation or loses a streamed event has not passed an end-to-end migration.
Observe and release with a rollback route
Record the provider, model ID or version, run lifecycle, tool-call lifecycle, and relevant errors in traces. Keep sensitive content out of telemetry unless your data policy permits it. These records help distinguish a model behavior change from an adapter bug, a permission rejection, a provider outage, or a client replay problem.
Deploy the candidate behind configuration or a routing flag, begin with a limited cohort, and monitor error and fallback rates alongside the evaluation measures. Keep the previous route available until the new configuration has demonstrated stable behavior in the workflows that matter to your users.
