The system can adjust speed when it detects a vehicle ahead, but it is a driver aid—not self-driving. The exact features depend on the vehicle’s make, model year, trim and market.
What does distance pacing cruise control mean?
It describes cruise control that manages both speed and the gap to a detected vehicle ahead. Ordinary cruise control aims to hold the speed you set; adaptive cruise control can slow down as traffic ahead slows and may accelerate toward your set speed when the way clears. Ford describes this behavior in its adaptive cruise control overview.

“Distance pacing” is a feature label, not a universal technical specification or guarantee of a particular set of capabilities. Automakers may use different names and implementations, so check the documentation for the exact vehicle rather than inferring details from the phrase.
How is it different from ordinary cruise control?

Distance pacing alone does not mean the car can steer, center itself in a lane or drive hands-free. Lane-centering or steering assistance is a separate feature; availability and how it works vary by vehicle.

Does it stop the car in traffic?
Not necessarily. Some ACC systems include stop-and-go operation, but that capability is not inherent in the term “distance pacing.” A Volkswagen technical document describes Stop&Go for the Arteon system it covers; that example does not establish that other models have the same function. Consult the relevant owner’s manual to learn what happens at a stop and whether the system resumes automatically or requires driver input.
What do the distance settings mean?
Many systems let the driver choose from following-gap settings, but the number of settings and the gap each represents vary. Ford’s December 2013 overview described four selectable settings for the vehicles covered in that document. That is a historical, vehicle-specific example—not a universal count or a current specification for all Ford vehicles.

Do not assume a setting corresponds to a particular number of seconds or metres unless the vehicle’s manual says so. A specific numeric safe following distance cannot be inferred from the phrase alone.

- How to select and interpret the following-gap settings.
- Whether it can slow to a full stop, and what the driver must do afterward.
- The operating speed range and conditions in which the system is available.
- How it detects vehicles and what warnings appear if a sensor is blocked.
- Whether lane-centering or other steering support is included as a separate feature.
Sensor hardware and control behavior are vehicle-specific. Ford’s December 2013 overview, for example, describes radar-based ACC for the vehicles discussed there; it is not evidence that all systems use radar alone.

The driver remains responsible for monitoring the road and controlling the vehicle. Ford states that its driver-assistance systems do not relieve the driver of the responsibility to use due care and attention. Treat ACC as assistance, not as a substitute for judgment or supervision.
