You can create a useful task manager web app by starting with a small task list: let people add, view, edit, complete, and delete tasks. Build and test that core loop first. Then decide whether you need a database, user accounts, or private multi-user data. This is a learning project—not a shortcut to a production-ready service.
What to build first
Keep the first version focused on a task title and whether the task is complete. Make sure someone can create a task, see it in a list, edit its title, mark it complete, and delete it. Leave due dates, labels, projects, sharing, and drag-and-drop for later; each adds decisions that can distract from learning the basic flow.

Plan for the interface to communicate what is happening. Show an empty state when there are no tasks, a loading state while data is being fetched, and a useful error if an operation fails. These details make even a small prototype easier to understand and debug.

There are two documented ways to pair a React app with Supabase for data storage. Next.js is a React framework for full-stack web applications. Its documentation lists HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React as helpful prerequisites; if React is new to you, work through the foundations before adding a database. The Next.js documentation also points learners to React and Next.js courses.

Supabase provides a Next.js starter template configured with cookie-based authentication, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. Alternatively, its React guide uses Vite to scaffold a React app and has you install the Supabase JavaScript client and configure a client helper. Neither path is established as categorically easier for every beginner; choose based on whether you want the Next.js framework and template or a React app scaffolded with Vite.
| Path | What the official guide provides | What you still need to handle |
|---|---|---|
| Next.js with Supabase | A Next.js template preconfigured with cookie-based authentication, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. | Designing your task features, configuring your project, and reviewing database access policies. |
| React with Vite and Supabase | A Vite-based React scaffold, Supabase client installation, client setup, and a database query example. | Adding the task interface and features, configuring your project, and reviewing database access policies. |
Follow the current setup steps in the Supabase Next.js quickstart or Supabase React quickstart. Commands and environment-variable names can change, so use the names and instructions in the guide for the starter you choose.

Scaffold the app and connect Supabase
- Create the app using your chosen guide. The Next.js route uses Supabase’s template; the React route uses Vite and adds
@supabase/supabase-js. - Create a Supabase project. Follow the guide to create the database project and retrieve the project URL and publishable key it specifies.
- Put configuration in local environment variables. Use the environment file and variable names required by the selected framework and guide. Do not paste credentials into application code or commit a local environment file containing them to source control.
- Set up the Supabase client and a database table. Follow the chosen quickstart’s client configuration and query example, adapting the example to your task data.
- Run the development server. Use the command shown in the guide, open the local app, and confirm it can connect to the project before building the task features.
The Supabase guides demonstrate the setup and query flow with an instruments example; they do not prescribe a task-manager schema. Treat the following table design as a starter implementation suggestion, not an official schema:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- ID: a unique identifier for each task.
- Title: the task text.
- Completion state: whether the task is done.
- Creation time: when the task was created.
- Due date: optional; add it only if your app needs it.
- Owner: include an owner reference if tasks belong to signed-in users.
Build and test the task actions
- Add and list tasks. Provide a form for a title, save a new task, and display the resulting list. Check that the list updates after a successful save.
- Edit a task. Let someone change the title and save the update. Make it clear which task is being edited and whether the change succeeded.
- Complete and reopen tasks. Add a clear completion control and show the task’s state in the list.
- Delete a task. Make the delete action distinct from completion so users can tell whether a task is finished or removed.
- Check ordinary failures. Try an empty title, a slow or unavailable connection, and a failed save or update. Give users feedback instead of silently leaving the interface unchanged.
Test with a keyboard as well as a pointer, and check that form fields and controls have understandable labels. For a screen-reader check, the Next.js accessibility guidance recommends Firefox with NVDA or Safari with VoiceOver.

Decide whether to add accounts
If the first version is a personal prototype, you can defer accounts and keep the project focused on the task flow. Accounts become important when users need separate, private task lists or access from multiple devices. Signing in establishes identity, session management tracks that sign-in, and authorization determines what the user is allowed to do.
The Next.js authentication guide explains these distinctions and recommends an authentication library: “While you can implement a custom auth solution, for increased security and simplicity, we recommend using an authentication library.” Supabase’s Next.js authentication quickstart covers its auth setup and sign-up flow.

Protect user-specific task data
A sign-in screen alone does not prevent one user from accessing another user’s tasks. If tasks are private, associate each record with its owner and configure database access policies so operations are limited to the authenticated owner. Enable and review Row Level Security (RLS) policies rather than assuming the app’s interface provides sufficient protection.
The Supabase Next.js quickstart says its procedure is intended to get a working app, not satisfy production requirements. It also cautions that its sample policy is scoped to sample data and says to review RLS policies before deployment. Do not treat a demonstration policy as a ready-made rule for private task records.

Prepare a prototype for deployment
- Exercise create, edit, completion, and delete flows, including empty inputs and failed requests.
- Check that loading, empty, and error states are understandable, and that the app works with keyboard controls.
- For a multi-user app, verify that database policies restrict each user to their own records.
- Set project credentials through the deployment platform’s environment-variable settings, not by committing them in application code or source control.
These checks help you move from a learning prototype toward a deployment, but following a quickstart does not amount to a security review. Review the actual database permissions and policies for the data and users your app will handle.
