Before treating any handset as a match, check the live price and exact regional model where you plan to buy.
Why there isn’t a reliable top-five list yet
“Under $100” sounds like a fixed budget, but the title does not specify where the phone must be sold, whether used devices count, or which carrier it must work with. A price in pounds in the UK cannot validate a dollar-price shortlist, and an imported phone may not support the bands used by a local carrier. The available evidence does not establish five current, comparable models below the threshold in one market, so ranking five would imply availability and pricing that have not been verified.

A useful comparison needs live offers in the same country and condition, along with the exact model variants. It should compare total price, RAM and storage, network compatibility, operating system and update commitment, battery and charging, display, and the seller’s warranty and return terms.

One evidenced example: Xiaomi Redmi A5
Xiaomi’s product specifications list the Redmi A5 with a 6.88-inch display rated up to 120Hz, a 32MP main camera, a 5,200mAh typical-capacity battery and 15W charging. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The Xiaomi UK store listing showed £59 for the 4GB/128GB configuration, with £109 displayed as its marketing price, when checked. This is a time-sensitive UK listing, not evidence of a US price, stock in another country or suitability for a particular carrier. Xiaomi also notes that an adapter may be sold separately in some regions, so check the box contents for the exact offer.
What to check before buying an imported budget phone
- Exact variant: Confirm the model number, RAM and storage on the listing and invoice. Similar product names may refer to different regional configurations.
- Carrier compatibility: Compare the phone’s supported LTE bands with your carrier’s requirements for your location. A phone that can connect in one country may not provide the expected coverage in another.
- Software and services: Confirm the operating system version, the seller’s or manufacturer’s stated update support, and whether Google Mobile Services are included if you rely on them.
- Total cost and contents: Check shipping, taxes, charger or adapter inclusion, and any other charges before deciding whether the phone is under budget.
- Seller protection: Verify seller reputation, local warranty coverage, return window and who handles service if the handset arrives faulty.
For a budget handset, headline camera megapixels alone are not enough to judge value. Price, network support, software, storage and the protections attached to the particular sale all matter.

- Find five live offers from sellers that deliver to that market; record the price, date checked, condition, exact configuration and seller.
- Verify each model’s regional specifications and supported carrier bands against manufacturer and carrier information.
- Compare warranty, returns, software support, included accessories and total checkout cost before ranking the options.
Without those market-specific checks, a list of five risks mixing prices and variants that a reader cannot actually buy on comparable terms.
