Allow Users to Uninstall Win32 Apps from Company Portal Using Intune

Enable self-service removal for eligible available Win32 apps by setting Allow available uninstall to Yes in Intune. Dependencies and assignment conflicts can affect the option.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To let users remove an eligible Win32 app themselves, edit the app in the Microsoft Intune admin center and set Allow available uninstall to Yes in its Program settings. Users can then open the app in Windows Company Portal and select Uninstall. This is a self-service option for available apps, not a blanket permission to remove every app managed by Intune; app dependencies and assignment rules can prevent or change the result.

Configure the Win32 app in Intune

  1. In the Microsoft Intune admin center, open the Win32 app you want users to be able to remove and choose to edit its properties.

  2. Go to the app’s Program settings and set Allow available uninstall to Yes. Microsoft describes this as providing the uninstall option for users in Company Portal. Setting it to No prevents removal through that self-service option.

  3. Make sure the app has a valid uninstall command. It must match the installer and correctly remove that application. For an MSI package, the command commonly uses msiexec /x with the product’s own product code; do not reuse an example GUID from documentation. Intune does not expand environment variables in the Uninstall command. If your removal process needs them, use an appropriate wrapper script.

  4. Save the change and confirm the app is assigned as Available to the intended users or devices. The setting enables the option; it does not by itself make an app available to a user.

How a user uninstalls the app

In the Windows Company Portal, the user opens Apps, selects the app, and chooses Uninstall. Microsoft notes that this option is available for some Win32 and Microsoft Store apps, not all apps. Available apps also appear only when the signed-in Company Portal user is the primary user who enrolled the device and the app applies to that device.

Why the Uninstall option may be missing

Check the app setting and availability

Verify that Allow available uninstall is set to Yes in the app’s Program settings and that the user or device has an applicable Available assignment. For Win32 apps, Available assignments can target user or device groups. Check that the signed-in user meets the primary-user requirement for the enrolled device.

Inspect app dependencies

Microsoft documents a firm limitation: Company Portal does not show Uninstall when the app has dependencies or is itself a dependent app, even if Allow available uninstall is enabled. Review the app’s dependency relationships before treating a missing option as a configuration error.

Review assignments and group targeting

Check all applicable user and device group assignments, including overlapping groups. Intune resolves assignment intents, and a conflict can make the effective behavior differ from the intent you expected. For example, Microsoft’s assignment guidance says a User Required assignment combined with a User Uninstall assignment resolves to Required, while User Available combined with User Uninstall resolves to Uninstall. In a documented case, an app can appear in Company Portal and choosing Install can cause installation to take precedence over an uninstall intent.

Self-service removal is different from an Intune Uninstall assignment

Route What it does Important behavior
User self-service Lets a user remove an eligible Available Win32 app from Company Portal when Allow available uninstall is Yes. Intended for available apps installed on demand. Dependencies can suppress the option.
Required assignment Directs Intune to install the app for the assigned group. If a user removes a required app, Intune may reinstall it during a later reevaluation.
Uninstall assignment Directs Intune to remove the app for the assigned group. Microsoft advises removing the install assignment or group membership before assigning Uninstall. If the same group has both install and uninstall assignments, the app may remain.

Use self-service when users should choose whether to remove an app they installed on demand. Use an Uninstall assignment when administrators need to direct removal for a group. Before relying on the latter, resolve overlapping install assignments and review all relevant user and device group intents. See Microsoft’s Win32 app configuration, app assignment guidance, and Win32 app management guidance for the documented settings and assignment behavior. For the user-facing steps, see Microsoft’s Windows Company Portal app help.
