Build a Home-Directory Deny Fixture Before an Agent Reads `.netrc`

An isolated temporary home directory and fake `.netrc` sentinel can expose credential-file access, but the test must observe attempted reads at the implementation’s actual file-access boundary.

To test whether an agent tries to read `.netrc`, give the tested code an isolated temporary home directory containing only a fake sentinel file, then observe or intercept the file-access boundary. Do not rely only on a failed login or authentication result: the file may have been read even if its contents were rejected. The exact way to select the home directory and observe access depends on the agent’s runtime and implementation.

Why the home directory matters

In Python, calling netrc.netrc() without a filename makes the library look for .netrc under the home directory determined by os.path.expanduser(), according to the Python 3.12 netrc documentation. Python’s pathlib.Path.home() uses the same expansion mechanism; the Python 3.13 pathlib documentation says it raises RuntimeError if the home directory cannot be resolved.

That documented behavior makes home-directory selection a useful test input for Python code. It does not establish how an unspecified agent or another programming language locates credentials. First identify the code path and home-resolution mechanism the implementation actually uses.

Build an isolated deny fixture

  1. Create a temporary home directory for the test. Keep it separate from the developer’s real home directory and do not copy real credentials into it.
  2. Add a harmless sentinel file. Create a .netrc with a clearly fake, nonfunctional entry. Its purpose is to make attempted access observable, not to authenticate to a real service.
  3. Point the tested execution path at the fixture. Use the mechanism honored by the implementation to resolve its home directory. Do not assume a particular environment variable or test-runner setting without checking the code and its dependencies.
  4. Observe the access boundary. Instrument or intercept the relevant file-open operation, or inject a controlled failure there. Assert that the protected code path does not attempt to open the sentinel if the requirement is “must not read.”
  5. Run the agent code path under test. Keep the assertion limited to the runtime, dependencies, and execution path the test actually exercises.
  6. Check the observer separately. If useful, run a small isolated positive control that intentionally opens the sentinel and confirm that the observer detects it.

Make the assertion match the security requirement

A check that only verifies no successful authentication is weaker than a no-read requirement. An agent could open or parse the file and then reject its contents, fail to authenticate, or never make a network request. To prove that a read was not attempted, the test needs to observe attempts at the file-access boundary relevant to the implementation.

Choose the observation point carefully. A hook around one Python function may miss code that opens the file through another API or a dependency. Likewise, a test that observes only one process may not cover a subprocess that performs credential lookup. The fixture establishes a controlled home; coverage depends on how completely the observer captures the code path being tested.

What Python’s permission checks do—and do not—prove

The Python 3.12 netrc documentation describes a POSIX ownership and permissions check for a default-path file containing passwords; insecure ownership or access can raise NetrcParseError. That is a parser safeguard, not evidence that an agent never tried to read the file. A test for non-access and a test for secure file permissions establish different properties.

The same documentation records that Python has used os.path.expanduser() to find the default .netrc location since Python 3.7, and that UTF-8 is tried before the locale-specific encoding since Python 3.10. Those version details describe the Python library; they do not establish credential lookup behavior for agents written in other languages.

Keep the result scoped

  • State which runtime, agent version or code path the test covers.
  • Distinguish “no successful authentication” from “no file-open attempt.”
  • Do not generalize Python’s documented lookup behavior to an agent whose runtime or implementation is unknown.
  • Remove the temporary directory and its fake sentinel as part of test cleanup.
