That division makes a solid starting point for a small browser game, but an in-memory match system in one server process is a prototype—not a multi-instance scaling strategy.
What each part of the stack does
| Component | Role in the game | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Phaser | Runs and renders the 2D game in the browser. It can be used with JavaScript or TypeScript. | It is a 2D-focused framework, not built-in 3D rendering or physics, and is not a modern-console development solution. |
| TypeScript | Types client and server code, including event names and payload shapes. | Compile-time types do not validate untrusted data arriving at runtime. |
| Socket.IO | Provides low-latency, bidirectional, event-based communication between clients and the server. | It does not implement game rules or make a client trustworthy. It is also not interchangeable with a plain WebSocket client. |
| Node.js and Express | Host the server application and attach Socket.IO to its HTTP server; execute authoritative match logic. | A single process with in-memory rooms does not coordinate multiple server instances. |
| MongoDB | Stores durable player profiles or statistics, completed match records, and data used for a leaderboard. | Persistent storage does not automatically provide the low-latency state synchronization needed during a live match. |
Phaser describes itself as an HTML5 framework for web games. MongoDB’s Node.js driver supports JavaScript and TypeScript and can connect to Atlas, Enterprise, and Community deployments. Atlas is a managed option for database operations such as provisioning, patching, backup, monitoring, and scaling; check its current offering and plan details before choosing it.

Keep the server authoritative
The client should report what a player is trying to do, not declare the outcome. If a browser sends a final position or score and the server accepts it as fact, a modified client can submit impossible movement or an invented score. Instead, send validated input—such as a movement direction—to the server, apply the game’s rules there, and broadcast the resulting state for clients to render.
A Phaser-hosted tutorial on multiplayer game development put the principle plainly: “We can make our game more secure by sending inputs to the server instead of the position. And then, we can calculate the new position of the player and broadcast it to other players.” The tutorial was published September 21, 2017, and does not identify an individual speaker.

TypeScript event maps help catch mismatched event names and payload shapes while writing the client and server. They are not a security boundary: a player can bypass the typed client and send malformed or abusive data. Validate incoming payloads on the server, check that the sender is allowed to act in that match, and enforce movement, timing, and scoring rules in server code.
How match rooms and live state fit together
A typical flow is: a player joins using a lobby or room ID; the server associates that socket with the match; clients send input events; the server updates the authoritative match; and relevant state or events are sent to the participants. Socket.IO rooms provide a way for server-side sockets to join a named channel and receive broadcasts intended for that subset of clients.

Rooms are a delivery mechanism, not the game state or its rules. Socket.IO documents rooms as a server-only concept, and sockets automatically leave rooms when disconnected. The application still needs to decide how a match is represented, what happens on disconnect or reconnect, and whether a returning player can resume.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA build sequence for a small two-player game
- Set up two TypeScript projects. Keep the backend and browser client separate. In the tutorial pattern, the backend uses Node.js, Express, Socket.IO, and MongoDB’s official Node.js driver; the front end uses Vite, Phaser, and
socket.io-client. They communicate at runtime over HTTP and Socket.IO rather than sharing a build-time package. - Define the protocol. Specify event names and payloads for joining a room, movement, coin collection, game start and end, and player movement updates. Typed client-to-server and server-to-client event maps can keep each side consistent. The example maintains duplicate type definitions in both projects, so they must be kept in sync; a larger project may instead use a shared package or generated protocol definitions.
- Create or join a match. Give the client a lobby or room ID and have the server validate the request, track membership, and join the appropriate Socket.IO room. Do not let the client choose an arbitrary room or player identity without server-side checks.
- Run the game loop on the server. Receive player intent, validate it, update positions, spawn coins, calculate collections and scores, and decide when the match ends. Send state updates or events to the relevant players. The Phaser client should render those results and collect input, rather than decide the final score.
- Persist completed or durable data. Save records that should survive a process restart, such as player statistics, completed matches, and leaderboard inputs, in MongoDB. The example uses a 30-second match duration as a sample-game setting; that is not a general recommendation for match length.
- Choose how to host MongoDB. A local or self-managed deployment gives the developer responsibility for operations. Atlas is a managed alternative, but its current capabilities and plans should be checked against the game’s needs.
Separate live match data from durable records
The tutorial keeps active rooms in an in-memory gameRooms map and uses MongoDB for persistent player, match, and leaderboard data. This is a sensible separation for a small prototype: live positions and current match events need timely updates, while completed results and player records need to survive the match.

The in-memory map exists only in the Node.js process that owns it. If that process stops, its live rooms disappear; if the application runs multiple server instances, each instance would otherwise have a different map. Storing finished records in MongoDB does not make active room ownership shared. Multi-instance operation requires a deliberate shared-state or coordination design, along with decisions about routing, disconnects, reconnects, and match ownership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where this starter architecture stops scaling
- One process is the boundary. An in-process room map is straightforward for a single server, but multiple instances need a way to coordinate who owns each room and how participants reach the right live state.
- Persistence and real-time synchronization are different concerns. MongoDB is useful for durable records in this example; it does not by itself solve the timing and coordination needs of a live game loop.
- Server authority adds work. It reduces reliance on client claims, but the server must implement and validate movement, scoring, collisions or physics, and match completion.
- Reconnect behavior needs explicit rules. A room broadcast does not determine whether a disconnected player is removed, can return, or forfeits. Define those behaviors in application logic.
- Phaser defines a scope choice. It fits browser-first 2D games. If the target requires built-in 3D rendering or modern console support, the stack does not provide that out of the box.
The tutorial is an implementation example, not evidence of tested player capacity or production readiness. Treat package versions, configuration, and deployment steps as version-sensitive and check the current documentation for the versions you choose.
