Build a Helpful Google Nest Smart Home, One Device at a Time

Build a useful Google Nest smart home by starting with one everyday task, checking each device’s exact compatibility and setup route, and adding Matter hubs and privacy controls only where needed.

Start with the Google Home app and one everyday task—not a shopping list. Decide what you want to control or keep track of, check that each exact device model works with Google Home, then add it using the setup route its manufacturer specifies. For Matter devices, confirm the device type is supported and that you have a compatible hub and IPv6-enabled home network.

Choose the job before choosing the device

A useful connected home solves a few specific problems reliably. Pick one starting point, such as controlling lights, adjusting climate, setting reminders, or checking a camera. This makes it easier to decide what belongs in your home and avoid buying devices whose features you will not use.

  • Lights: Look for a compatible smart bulb, switch, or plug, and check whether the product needs a hub or a particular Wi-Fi band.
  • Climate: Confirm that the exact thermostat model supports Google Home and check its wiring and installation requirements.
  • Reminders and voice control: A compatible speaker or display can provide a place to speak commands and hear responses.
  • Security: Check the camera generation, setup app, network requirements, recording options, and who will be able to view the camera.

Google says its “Works with Google Home” ecosystem includes over 80,000 compatible devices; the figure appears on Google’s Matter preparation page, which does not state a publication year. It is a Google-published count, not an independent measure or a guarantee that every device offers the same controls. Google Home and Nest Help: Prepare your smart home for Matter

Check whether a device will work before you buy it

Compatibility depends on the exact model and the features you want. A logo on the box is a useful starting point, but it does not establish that every function will be available in Google Home. Check the product’s current specifications and setup instructions before purchase.

For Matter devices

  1. Look for the Matter mark and confirm that Google Home supports the device’s category. Matter support is category-specific, so the standard alone does not establish that every type of Matter product can be added.
  2. Check the network and hub requirements. Google’s Matter setup guidance requires a compatible hub and IPv6 on the home network. Google describes local control over the home network and Thread as a mesh option for compatible devices.
  3. Verify that the hub model supports the Matter and Thread features you need. Google says a Matter-enabled hub is needed to add Matter devices and to enable local and remote control through Google Home.
  4. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for power, Wi-Fi or Thread, and pairing. A Matter QR code or setup code may be part of the process, but the exact steps depend on the device.

Google’s setup instructions state: “You need one Matter-certified smart home hub for each Matter-certified app that you want to control the Matter-enabled device from.” Google Home and Nest Help: Prepare your smart home for Matter Google Nest Help: Set up, manage and control Matter-enabled devices with Google Home

For devices that are not being added through Matter

Check whether the product is set up directly in Google Home, in the Nest app, or through a manufacturer’s account-linking flow. “Works with Google Home” indicates an integration, not necessarily identical setup steps or capabilities across brands. Review the exact model’s official instructions and privacy terms.

Use a hub that matches your Matter plans

If you want to add Matter devices, Google lists the Google Home Speaker (2026) as Matter-compatible, a Matter hub for Google Home, and a Thread 1.3 border router. Those specifications make it a relevant option for a home using Matter and Thread devices. The specifications do not establish its current price, stock, or availability in your region. If you already own a Google or Nest speaker or display, do not assume that it provides every hub feature. Check Google’s current Matter hub and device-support information for the exact model and intended use. Whether a hub is useful depends on your devices: a Matter setup requires a compatible hub, while a home without Matter devices may not need one for its chosen products.

Prepare your phone, app, and network

The Google Home app is available for Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later, according to Google’s app requirements. Setup through the app requires a phone or tablet; Google says you cannot use a computer to set up devices with Google Home. Check the current requirements because app and product support can change. Google Nest Help: Requirements for the Google Home app

For Matter, confirm IPv6 is enabled on your home network and that the compatible hub is ready before pairing. For cameras, requirements vary by model: some setup flows may need both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and access to scan a QR code. Use the camera’s model-specific instructions rather than treating these as universal requirements. Google Nest Help: Set up Nest cameras and doorbells

Set up devices in a deliberate order

  1. Install or update Google Home. Confirm that your phone meets the app requirements, then sign in and create or select the household where you want the devices to appear.
  2. Set up the hub first if you plan to use Matter. Follow its instructions, check IPv6, and make sure Google Home supports the Matter device category you intend to add.
  3. Add one device at a time. Use the setup app and pairing method specified for that exact model. This may be Google Home, the Nest app, a Matter setup code, or the manufacturer’s account-linking flow.
  4. Assign the device to the correct room. Choose a short, meaningful name that will be easy to recognize in the app and say aloud. Google recommends meaningful names for voice control in its Seamless Setup guidance. Google Home and Nest Help: Set up or remove Seamless Setup smart devices
  5. Test basic control before adding more. Try the app and any voice controls you intend to use. Check what happens if the device loses power or connectivity so you understand its behavior before relying on an automation.
  6. Add automations only after manual control works. Keep the first routine simple—for example, switching a compatible light on at a chosen time. Review the routine’s triggers and actions so it does what you expect.

Choose the right app for each Google or Nest product

Many current Google and Nest devices use the Google Home app, but setup is not uniform across the product range. Google’s camera instructions still direct some older camera generations through the Nest app, while other models have different setup paths. Confirm the generation and model before beginning; a procedure for one camera is not necessarily right for another. Google Nest Help: Set up Nest cameras and doorbells Google Nest Help

Third-party devices can also require their own manufacturer app or account before they appear in Google Home. Follow the manufacturer’s current steps, then check which controls are available after linking. Do not assume that setup through one route gives you every feature offered in the manufacturer’s app.

Make privacy part of setup

Before adding a device, identify what it can sense and where its data is handled. Google’s connected-device privacy materials describe information such as setup details, sensor data, and audio or video data or information derived from it. Video is stored when a user chooses Google video storage services. What applies depends on the device’s features, settings, permissions, and selected storage service. These statements describe Google products and services, not every third-party product. Google Nest privacy

Google groups connected-device sensors into camera, microphone, activity, environmental, and control categories. Check which sensors your device has and review the available controls and permissions in its app. For a third-party device, read its manufacturer’s privacy notice too. Google’s Seamless Setup guidance puts it plainly: “The privacy policy for your smart device varies depending on the manufacturer.” Google Nest Help: Sensors on Google Nest devices Google Home and Nest Help: Set up or remove Seamless Setup smart devices

  • Review who has access to the household and its devices.
  • Check camera and microphone controls before placing a device in a sensitive area.
  • Understand what activity or environmental sensors detect and which settings govern them.
  • Choose any video storage service deliberately, and review its terms and controls.
  • For third-party products, consult the manufacturer’s privacy policy and account settings.

Expand only when the first device is useful

Once a device is set up and its controls make sense, decide whether another product solves a separate need. For each addition, compare the setup route, supported Google Home functions, connectivity and coverage, power source, privacy controls, and any required hub or service. A Thread mesh can be useful for compatible devices where the home layout calls for it, but it is not a reason by itself to add equipment. Build around the tasks you actually want handled, and verify current compatibility and requirements for each exact model.
