There is no universal winner between Verizon Fios and Optimum: the better choice depends first on which service and technology are offered at your exact address, then on the full monthly cost, upload speed, and price terms. Verizon’s listed Fios offers include a router and multi-year price guarantees; Optimum advertises lower starting prices for some tiers, but its standard rates and equipment terms differ, and its cable and fiber services are not interchangeable.
Check availability before comparing prices
Both providers require an address check, and service or tiers can vary within the same town or region. Compare the offers returned for the same home rather than assuming a provider’s advertised lineup is available everywhere. Verizon’s and Optimum’s plan pages describe advertised offers, not a quote guaranteed for every address.

Verizon describes its prices as “as low as” and conditions discounted pricing on Auto Pay and paper-free billing. Optimum’s listed promotional prices reflect an eligible $10 Auto Pay and paperless billing discount where stated; taxes and fees apply. Offers and availability vary.

Verizon also advertises a 99.9% network reliability figure on its plan page. That is Verizon’s own marketing claim, not an independent measurement or a promise of service at a particular home. Optimum’s promotional page describes an initial gateway-fee offer followed by possible annual increases; read its terms to see the charge and how it changes. The providers’ headline prices therefore are not directly comparable until you account for payment-method discounts, taxes, fees, equipment, and what you will pay after a promotion or guarantee ends.
Optimum cable and fiber have different upload speeds and standard rates
“Optimum 1 Gig” does not identify one uniform connection. Optimum’s rate card, effective July 1, 2026, lists cable 1 Gig as up to 940 Mbps download and 35 Mbps upload for $144.99 per month. Its fiber 1 Gig is listed as 940 Mbps symmetrical—940 Mbps download and upload—for $115 per month. These are rate-card figures, not the promotional prices above, and fiber availability is area-specific. The upload difference can matter if you regularly send large files, back up data to the cloud, host video calls, or work with other people sharing the connection. In those cases, confirm the upload speed of the specific plan rather than choosing by download speed or the “Gig” label alone. A symmetrical fiber tier can offer much more upload capacity than the cable tier listed here; that does not establish that fiber is available at your location.

Compare the cost over the period you expect to keep service
A low introductory price is useful only if you know its duration and the charges around it. Verizon lists three-year guarantees for its 300 and 500 Mbps offers and five-year guarantees for its 1, 2, and 5 Gig offers, subject to the advertised billing conditions. Optimum’s plan page sets out promotional terms, a gateway-fee offer, and possible later increases. The reviewed information does not establish a single post-promotion price that applies to every Optimum customer or address.

Before ordering either provider, compare the same billing period and write down:
- The monthly rate after any Auto Pay or paperless-billing discount, and whether you can meet those conditions.
- Taxes, fees, installation charges, and any gateway or router charge.
- How long a price guarantee or promotion lasts, and the applicable price after it ends.
- Whether equipment is included or whether customer-owned equipment is permitted under that exact plan and account.
Verizon says a router is included with the listed plans. Optimum’s rate card and broadband-facts materials describe customer-owned-equipment options, but terms and possible discounts vary. Do not assume a router you already own is compatible or will reduce the bill; verify compatibility and charges for the particular offer before buying equipment.

Advertised speeds are not a home-specific performance guarantee
Verizon says service may not be available at marketed speeds. Its Fios Customer Agreement explains that speed can vary with network congestion, device configuration and use, the condition of delivery facilities, the router, and wiring inside the home. Optimum likewise says wired advertised speeds can vary and local congestion may affect performance. Neither provider’s general plan page establishes which will have better reliability, latency, or customer service at a particular address.
One Optimum broadband-facts label reviewed for its 100 Mbps cable plan lists 111 Mbps typical download, 5 Mbps typical upload, and 26 ms typical latency. Those figures apply to that specific plan label; they should not be generalized to Optimum’s other cable tiers, its fiber service, or a head-to-head comparison with Fios.

Choose based on your household’s actual offer
When Verizon Fios may fit better
- Your address qualifies for Fios and its available plan meets your upload and download needs.
- You value the listed multi-year price guarantee and included router, after checking the billing conditions and any other charges.
- You need a higher advertised tier than Optimum lists on the reviewed promotional page, and that Fios tier is actually offered at your home.
When Optimum may fit better
- Your address has an Optimum offer whose full cost is lower over the period you plan to keep service.
- The specific Optimum connection is fiber and its symmetrical upload speed is useful to your household.
- You have confirmed the offer’s promotion duration, later charges, and gateway or customer-equipment terms.
A practical address-level comparison
- Enter the same service address on both provider sites and note the available plans and whether Optimum is offering cable or fiber.
- Compare download and upload speeds for the exact tiers, not just the plan names.
- Calculate the recurring cost across the period you expect to keep service, including required discounts, taxes, fees, equipment, and any installation charge shown.
- Record the end date of each guarantee or promotion and the price or increase disclosed for afterward.
- Check whether included equipment can support the Wi-Fi coverage your home needs, and verify any customer-owned equipment terms before purchasing a router or mesh system.
Without an address-matched offer and comparable independent performance measurements, a broad ranking of these providers’ local speed, reliability, or service quality would not be supported. The fairest choice is the plan with the best verified combination of availability, upload and download capacity, equipment, and total cost for your home.
