Choose Budgie if you want a visible panel and taskbar, an app menu, and a sidebar for notifications and controls. Choose GNOME if you prefer an Activities overview, search-led app launching, and workspaces for organizing windows. Neither is objectively better for every workflow; the difference is how you prefer to find apps and manage your desktop.
Budgie vs GNOME at a glance
| Workflow priority | Budgie | GNOME |
|---|---|---|
| Launch apps | Budgie Menu provides categorized browsing and search; the project repository also documents a run dialog. | Type in the Activities overview to search for apps, files, folders, and web content. The dash holds favorite and running apps. |
| Manage windows and workspaces | A conventional panel and taskbar workflow; the project overview lists a workspace applet. | The Activities overview displays windows and workspace organization. |
| See notifications and controls | Raven brings notifications, a calendar, media controls, and widgets together in a sidebar. | The top bar provides access to the calendar and system properties; the overview and dash focus on apps and windows. |
| Customize the layout | You can create a dock, add multiple panels, or keep the interface minimal. | Third-party Shell extensions can alter the interface and behavior; check compatibility and maintenance before relying on one. |
| Try it through | Budgie maintainers list Fedora Budgie Spin, Ubuntu Budgie, and Solus as distribution options. | A distribution that provides a supported GNOME session; check its GNOME version and defaults. |
These are documented interaction models, not comparative usability or performance test results. The choice is best made by trying the everyday tasks you actually do.

How Budgie fits a panel-and-taskbar workflow
Budgie 10 follows a familiar desktop pattern: a panel gives you a persistent place to access apps and manage open windows, while Budgie Menu offers categories and search for launching software. Raven adds a separate sidebar for notifications, calendar information, media controls, and widgets. The Budgie project describes this as a traditional panel and taskbar layout; that is the project’s characterization, not an independent usability finding. (Budgie FAQ)

How GNOME fits an overview-and-search workflow
GNOME begins with the Activities overview, which brings windows and applications into view. From there, you can type to search for apps, files, folders, and web content; use the dash for favorite and running applications; and organize windows across workspaces. This approach suits people who would rather open an overview or search than rely on a persistent taskbar. (GNOME visual overview)
GNOME’s top bar provides access to the calendar and system properties, while the overview and dash are the main routes for finding apps and switching among windows. The interface is coherent out of the box, but changing Shell behavior through extensions involves third-party software.

Customization: what to consider before relying on extensions
Budgie’s documented customization includes docks and multiple panels. GNOME Shell extensions can change Shell behavior, but they are created outside the normal GNOME design and development process and are supported by their authors rather than the GNOME community. Check whether an extension is maintained and compatible with the GNOME version you use, especially if your workflow depends on it. (GNOME Shell Extensions: About)

The Budgie project says Budgie 10 uses some GNOME technologies but is not based on GNOME Shell; do not assume that GNOME Shell extensions apply to Budgie. (Budgie FAQ)

Which desktop should you choose?
Choose Budgie if you prefer
- A visible panel and taskbar for launching apps and returning to open windows.
- A categorized app menu with search.
- A sidebar that gathers notifications and useful controls.
- Panel and dock choices without building your workflow around GNOME Shell extensions.
Choose GNOME if you prefer
- An overview that puts open windows and workspaces in focus.
- Search as a central way to find apps and other content.
- A favorites dash rather than a traditional taskbar as your main app switcher.
- Optional third-party extensions when you want to change Shell behavior and can verify their compatibility.
Try the same tasks in each
- Launch an app using the menu or overview, then try search.
- Return to a running window and switch between groups of windows or workspaces.
- Check how you access notifications, calendar information, and media controls.
- Adjust the panel or overview, and see whether the resulting layout feels natural without extra changes.
Release status and distribution choice
Upstream releases do not tell you exactly what a particular computer will receive: the Linux distribution determines the packaged version, defaults, update cadence, and integration. Verify the desktop version and support lifetime for the distribution release you plan to install.
